Invalid docking layout stream header
« on: December 07, 2007, 02:25 PM »
I get an error popup whenever I start Clipboard Help & Spell - it has been happening for awhile, not sure if it started after last update or not - didn't seem to.

The error that pops up is "Invalid docking layout stream header".  Anytime I try to past from history, it does the same thing and pulls up the main window instead of the context window next to the cursor.

Any ideas?

sounds like something got corrupted in the PresetViews/ subdirectory.
try choosing a different View from the main Presets menu.  If that fails to solve it, you could try reinstalling on top of your current install (just exit from tray first), or email me ([email protected]) and i can try to help.

Ahh... well at least that gave me a direction to go.  Selecting different views didn't help, neither did re-installing over the top.  What I did do which at least stopped the error popup was stopped the program, went to the PresetViews directory and noticed the Last.preset.dock file was timestamped about the time the issue started happening for me.  I renamed it to Last.preset.dock.old and restarted the program.  Viola!  Error no longer comes up.

thanks for the report Ian -- that's good to know for the future.  Perhaps I can add something to check for such a failure in the future and automatically delete the Last.preset.dock file if it gets messed up somehow (maybe computer reset while it was in the process of saving).

it sounds like something is wrong with the docking thing.
can you try exiting, then deleting the "Last.preset.*" files in the PresetViews subdirectory and then restarting.
i think this 3rd party docking component library was updated recently to solve this bug, i will look for it.

Thanks, that worked.... I closed the app., then went into windows explorer and deleted this file from "preset views":

last.preset.dock

and then restarted the app., and the error message is gone.    thanks again, jokimo

I am having the same problem of late.
I get this error when my computer starts.
chs.pngInvalid docking layout stream header
I am assuming it is from Clipboard Help + Spell, as I cannot link it to anything else.

Try this, open Clipboard Help+Spell, and choose from the Layouts menu "Standard", then exit CHS.
See if that fixes it.

It does not seem to help if I do what you suggest.
All it does is once I change the Layouts menu to Standard, I get the same error box to pop up right when I do.
Thanks for the tip, but it is not working for me.

I hope we can figure it out.

Can I ask if you are using the portable version or normal installed version?

I am quite certain, I am using the normal, portable version. That is what I installed and I use the update feature and it would have updated only the normal version not to the portable version, correct?
I have only noticed this problem within the last month or so.
Should I uninstall and reinstall?

Try this:
Exit Clipboard Help+Spell.
Then find the directory where Clipboard Help+Spell stores its "PresetViews" folder. By default it is in MyDocuments\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\PresetViews\
Then delete all the files in their starting with "Last."

If you keep getting this error, it may be that some security thing is preventing the program from saving its files where it thinks it should.  If so, one solution might be to UNINSTALL and DELETE the C:\ProgramFilesx86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell directory, and then either reinstall OR download the portable version and install it someplace where you store your files normally.

I deleted all the  files in the directory and rebooted the computer. I do not get the error anymore, however, it does not appear that  the program is saving my clips anylonger.

I have noticed since I did what was suggested in all previous posts, that now CHS no longer captures any of my clips. Once I make a copy  and paste, my clipboard is empty.
It has been since I did all of the steps from late April. I never noticed until the other day, when I tried to go back and get something I had done, and noticed there is NOTHING to get. NOTHING from no time.
Any ideas??
Thanks, a LOT.

Just reporting that I was consistently getting:
"Error EX54: Invalid docking layout stream header"
- at every CHS start, and it always displayed the default layout - not the last layout it had been shut down with. So the last selected layout was not "sticking".

I then did a search and found this discussion thread and fixed the problem thus:
  • Shut down CHS.
  • CHS is installed as "portable", so I went to the folder: C:\UTIL\Windows utilities\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\Clipboard Help+Spell\PresetViews
  • There, I deleted all the files with names prefixed "Last".
  • One of the files (I think it was Last.preset.dock) would not delete, so I used Unlocker to complete that task.

To check if the fix had worked:
  • I then started CHS and it displayed the default layout and gave no error message.
  • I selected one of my preferred layouts and then shut down CHs and restarted it.
  • The last (preferred layout) was displayed, and no error message was given.
- so the fix had worked a treat - thanks.

I think the error had started occurring following a bad system crash.

Hi Mouser,
I am getting this error again today. Just started again. I guess I wrote about it several years ago and I have not had or at least not been notified of it until just now when I started up my computer.
Yesterday I suspended the noises from Automatic Screen Shotter. Now, I do not see its icon in the taskbar.
When I booted up I received this message "Error EX54: Invalid docking layout stream header"

Oh, and Mouser, you helped me just a month ago, EXTENSIVELY with Automatic Screen Shotter. This is where the help began -- https://www.donation....msg434966#msg434966 and then a LOT of email support. Thanks, again, Scott

I'm not sure what happened that would cause that error, but I know it must mean that your docking layout files are somehow corrupt.
If the problem persists after you exit and restart CHS, you should be able to solve the problem by exiting CHS and then deleting the files:
PresetViews\Last.preset.dock
PresetViews\Last.preset.grid
PresetViews\Last.preset

Which should be subdirectories of your settings directory, which will be under like MyDocs\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell

Hello Mouser,
I am getting MORE CHS errors yesterday and today -- it would seem "out of the blue"
I am so sorry to write you directly, but since you have helped me in the past, (https://www.donation...19.new;topicseen#new) multiple times, I thought no better way to do so.

I get the following errors, and I am going to attach screen clips.

First came,
Error EX4 for db file D:\Scott's Documents/DonationCoder\ClipboardHelp+Spell\Database/ClipboardHelpAndSpell : DBISAM Engine Error #8961 Header information corrupt in the table 'ClipTable'
https://www.dropbox....view=ScreenClip1.png
Then,
Error DB65: DBISAM Engine Error # 8961 Header Information corrupt in the table 'ClipTable'
https://www.dropbox....view=ScreenClip2.png
Hopefully we can resolve again these.
Thank you for your tireless efforts.
Amiably, Scott

I am reading on the site and it seems related to this older post https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=25938.0, too, but it is unhelpful to me. I hope you have some ideas for me.
Thanks, a lot.

How strange.

Can you tell me what version of CHS you are using?
Have you tried the "repair" function in the CHS options on the maintenance tab?
It sounds like maybe there is some trouble saving the files.. You might try changing the location of the temp database in CHS which can be found on the Tweaks 1 tab -- this can help situations where some antivirus is causing trouble.
