How to: Pimp your Ubuntu!
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:31 AM »
[via nixCraft]:
This guide will let you pimp Ubuntu Linux to look like Windows Vista or Mac OS X Leopard, or a blend of both.

From the article by Dark Star:
Changes are part of Nature so as with Technology, though this cannot be true for Windows and Mac cause the life cycle of a single Version is too much which is not the case with Linux. Open Source evolves at a rapid rate and with evolution comes unique changes. Today with a hike in Linux acceptance its pretty hard for competitors to provide similar solutions at free of cost… I have tried to kept the guide as simple as I can so that even a newbie can understand how to make changes. There are few major changes in Ubuntu Themes and Icon Control Panel. So please read carefully.

Very cool! Although all of the different "OS" look the same :)

It's ironic because Bill Gates is Satan!

I find it funny and ironic that the Linux folk spend so much time and energy trying to look like Windows :)

Isn't that what the Apple people say have long said about Windows?  :D Besides, Gnome (the UI above) has been around since Windows95 days.

The transparent windows and 3d effects etc were around on GNU/Linux before vista came along...

Yes, for slick effects (not useful at all, but slick) Compiz and Beryl are the kings. Perhaps if Microsoft gave some API to manipulate Aero... Even Apple did something recently with Core Animation.

I kind of agree...
I think two things are going on here, one being the number of folks savvy enough to "make the switch" but the interface needs to be a little more like what we are all so used to, and the other being the fact that Microsoft actually had a few good ideas that are worth implementing in whatever OS you're using.
Me, I have gone almost the opposite. One of the many reasons I use Linux is because I can use my computer in a way that is not locked in to the Microsoft interface. I used Litestep on Windows for this very reason; I can set it up the way I work, not the way Explorer allows me to work.
