Blog steals Zaine's Great Software List

Stealing Zaine's Great Software List as found here:
http://www.anova.org/software/

Apparently Deny doesn't have a brain of his own to come up with a list so he has to steal someone else' hard work.

First of all, probably just denouncing it in comments on the blog. Then... I don't know...

Might be able to report it to Blogger by clicking Flag at the top of the page.  Other than that not much you can do.

It obvious that the only reason for the blog is for Google Ads and generating revenue.

disgusting...

First of all, probably just denouncing it in comments on the blog. Then... I don't know...

Leaving comments on the infringing blogs doesn't do any good...the blog owner will just delete them about as fast as you and your friends can add them.

Since it's on a blogspot blog, the proper procedure would be for Zaine to send a DMCA takedown notice to Google.

This is one of the reasons why I made the decision to rewrite my ebooks site, going from a single page to something much harder to copy the entire list. All the work I put into creating my list was too easy to copy and stick in a single blog post and some of these blogs were ranked higher than my site and were making money off my work from ads.

The biggest problem with people doing this and stealing visitors from the original site, is they don't care about the content...they just want the traffic, and ultimately the ad clicks.

They are not going to maintain the content, add to it, improve it...they don't care. To them it's just text that gets them visitors to click on the ads and put money in their pocket.

The poor visitors end up with something that eventually becomes outdated, never seeing the original that is being maintained by the actual creator of the content, who does it as a labor of love.

And the quality of original content can suffer, too. When things like this happen, it can discourage the author from continuing to improve his work.

Might be able to report it to Blogger by clicking Flag at the top of the page.

That button is for reporting 'obscene content'. The only results you will get from that is that if enough people click that, it will become an 'unlisted' blog and won't get visitors from the 'Next Blog' button.

It will not remove the post, block access to it, or remove it from search engines.

Oh look, its got 46 diggs too. I'm willing to bet even if you went and posted a digg comment that this was stolen, most diggers will continue to digg away. I'm not too impressed with the intelligence of an average digger. As for Zaine, he can contact the author, who probably won't care. If he dared to copy in the first place, he won't be afraid of the consequences. At least your work is good enough to be copied; you can take pride in that.

If you got a digg account, let your opinion be known. With all do respect to donationcoder, you'll get a bigger audience over there,no offense mouser  :D

On a side note,...
Damn! if i knew Zaine's work would've got so much attention i would've submitted to digg long ago, with proper credit of course. Shame really, needless to say, Zaine deserves his credit for his hard work.

it doesn't help Zaine but it's good to see that that site looks crap. it's not something i'd ever want to visit again as a casual browser.

These scumbags invariably fade off into oblivion in a few days. They're generally blogging novices who start ripping content off coz they think Adsense is some kind of goldmine (HAR! HAR!) and get a quick dose of reality. He's probably getting a decent number of hits from Digg, so Digg users may want to bury the submission.

Either a sheepish mindset or favoritism

I don't mind digging, even though I have no respect for Digg any more as its proven to be nothing more than a breeding ground for fan boys/girls of various OSes.

I'd suggest StumbleUpon and good old fashioned links from various blogs/sites to improve the pagerank.

I guess if you scroll down to the bottom of the article it includes a link to the source.

Don't know if it was originally there, none the less given the horrible cut and paste job it's nearly invisible.
That, and how many people cut and paste the whole article,as apposed to just linking. If you find an article
on a newspaper site would you copy the whole article and paste it on your own site ? I wouldn't.Do that
with an AP article or any commercial news outlet and they can sue.

On a tangent, you gotta love Digg's Ajax commenting system (the technical aspect).

Zaine's made a comment  to the blog, and the guy replied.  My guess is the "source" was added after the fact, but then I want to believe the worst about somebody who would steal like this.

Could the owner of the blog be from a part of the world where intellectual rights are kind of ignored?

This is kind of like stealing someone's car and hanging a picture of it with the original owner behind the wheel in your garage. What a jerk.

Ha, ha - good point Tom!

I think we should put this sad thread on the donationcoder blog and then link to it from all our own websites so that it gets a higher pagerank than that sad person.

If you want to avoid this problem in the future Zaine, you could have all links in the list point an internal link that checks the referrer, if its not your frontpage redirect it there. That way they'll have to change all the links to the homepages of the programs in question making is much harder for them to rip it off. something like : http://www.anova.org/flink.php?id=opera

I'm not sure how this impact on pagerank and if google would give this a lower ranking than linking to opera.com for example, however i'm sure if you give it the proper headers (permanently redirected -- http status 304??) it might not have any negative impact.

-nevermind-

I had written that he changed all the links but I see that Zaine links directly to the software's homepage.  Not sure why I thought it linked to an internal, category page.
