best clipboard program
« on: November 05, 2007, 04:50 AM »
hello

is there a program that will sit in the tray and will record everything I type? I want this because often I write a big text and then the program where I write it crashes, so I loose all the text

also it would be nice to save all the files I have in my clipboard

are these programs called clipboard managers, or I am wrong? whats the best?

thanks

i use Perfect Keylogger Lite to record.

mm this thing is for spying...

I don't want it to record mouse clicks and keystrokes (keys like ESC, ALT, etc)

I only want it to record text I type and text I copy (put to clipboard)

Maybe instead you want to write long texts in a text editor that continuoally saves itself, such as Microsoft OneNote or Google Docs. Then copy and paste it into the program that crashes sometimes.

Try Clipdiary.  It does what you want to do.  And, it's free!

this does NOT monitor typed text
it does NOT save all files in clipboard

this seems to be good
http://www.ardamax.com/akll/

but the problem is that it records even hotkeys I type :(
I wish it could only record the more than 2 characters text

and ofcourse to monitor clipboard as well, so that I wont need to have another software running

Here are my favourite clipboard managers:
Clipboard Help And Spell (made by our own mouser ;) )
KlipKeeper (a FARR v2 plugin, by hamradio)
and
ditto a very full-featured clipboard manager.

dont see how you'ld get around that ?
use find & replace afterwards ?

me I've gotten to a stage where I save whatever I'm working on very often...

I swear by CLCL.. not glitzy, but small/portable and does the job really well...

I believe a clipboard manager manages what you copy or cut (text & some manage images as well)
meaning it doesnt manage what you simply type

So what you are looking for is something else really
if it exists I dont know  :)

I'd recommend changing the thread title -
maybe to a summary of your question & you might get more appropriate responses

I saw some software solution that sounded really "neat" on that front the other day, something that claimed it hooked into key applications and was able to save snaps of your work, using spyware tech but smartly... but I cannot remember it at the moment to check if my memory is playing games or not

The options I am aware of:

- pick the right tool for working your text, one that autosaves a lot... then use a version archiver to keep copies

- find a keylogger program which has backup-oriented options (meaning you can tell it to ignore text typed except in certain contexts like the text windows of any text/editor/web browser/email client etc. and ignore keys).
The problem with normal keyloggers is that without a lot of analysis it is hard to tell what was text, and what might have been selected and deleted later.

- use a lightweight macro recorder tool and run it while you are working. this means you can rerun what you did later. Not sure what kind of resource and disk usage that would cause, though. Same problem you already mentioned about the

- use a tool that does regular screenshots as a backup. and character recognition. Included for completeness!

- use a tool that saves everything you select and regularly select the text you are working on, without having to copy. This is a bit like a clipboard manager but without having to copy. Works beautifully if like me you select while you think
Again the issue is that what you select to copy/past or delete also gets saved and you wont know the difference

- learn to press the save key a lot. I think there was a discussion lately about how to do a script that would force it.

All right, I agree with you there has to be a better way

I have switched from CLCL to DITTO. I love the search tool in DITTO which I really missed in CLCL.

kalos, there is somewhat similar discussion here.. maybe a program like this more suitable to your needs?

Emsa Save My Work
Emsa Save My Work is a simple personal keylogger, that is not aimed at snooping, but rather to keep track of everything you are typing. If you have ever experienced a program crash and lost the content of a letter or email you had just typed, then this program can be of help. It automatically logs everything you type and allows you to review the log and also save it to a file. The program runs in the system tray and can be enabled/disabled as needed.

iphigenie - you're not insane! I've been wracking my brains as I've read this thread trying to remember the name of the app that I came across that does what kalos is looking for. Can I remember it? Nope. But I *know* it's out there. FWIW, kalos, I'm pretty confident that the app I'm thinking of was probably highlighted on DC in the past, so searching the forums creatively might turn something up. In the interim, I'll try to remember where/when/what I saw...

I wouldn't use a program that crashes all the time and loses my work.  There are too many good programs available.

Heh, heh - good one Mike! In my zeal to find a solution that matched kalos's stated requirement, I overlooked the obvious! Still can't remember the name of that application, though. It was probably a keylogger of some kind, though, so might not have "suited". It might, too, have been something much "heavier" in terms of resources - one of the third party applications that takes over the automatic backup functionality in Office and makes it universal on one's system and more configureable... Still thinking (brain starting to hurt from the effort. Oh well...).

many programs may crash from time to time, due to problems of the actual program or another program may crash and cause problems

also there might be accidental detele of the text or close of the program

and not all programs have abilities to bring back the text as office suites

lets say you write here a reply with long text and somehow you close the tab of the browser  :wallbash:

anyway, another reason that I would like such program is when I typed or copied some text lets say some hours or days ago and I cant remember it :wallbash:

apparently it saves after every keystroke :)

Just posted this in the thread tomos pointed too, but note (no pun intended) that OneNote and SQLNotes save every keystroke as well.

A bit late in the game, but WordPerfect8 crashes often on me.
Mostly at start up though.
I haven't upgraded as i don't find any significant improvements.
Using XP Home.

I would suggest OpenOffice as best replacement even for Word users.
Most people don't need all the extras in Microsoft programs.

Ditto is nice. Doesn't use much memory.

I love ClipX http://www.bluemars.org/clipx/.

It is tiny, 68k; has nice, easy keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl-Shift-V Clip Menu, Ctrl-Shift-G Pass clip to Google, Ctrl-Shift-N Pass to browser as URL; and is easy to use.  It is not updated very often, but it does a nice job.  Check it out.

Yep, ClipX is sweet! Also, it runs from a flash drive quite nicely. Someone just needs to make a plugin do you can choose a capture sound. I have it mapped to my right mouse X button using X-Mouse Button Control (another VERY handy program).

How about Yankee Clipper lll (YC3)?
I've used this for years and it's a valuable tool for me.
Freeware

oops! I realized you said you wanted something to record what you type...
YC3 doesn't do that! :-[
