A 500mb bittorrent full-length movie spoof on star trek and babylon 9 (english subtitles).

http://www-fi.starwreck.com/index.php

i'm half-way through and *loving* it.  Very high quality fan-made movie, special effects are superb and the movie is extremely entertaining so far.  easily the best thing like this i have ever seen.

"The first Finnish full-length scifi parody is made from astounding special effects, action and loads of dark humour. It is the product of a core group of five Finns and many people who've helped us during the seven years it has been in the making. You can download the entire movie by clicking here. For free, of course. "

ps. someone asked about the use of bittorrent and here is a great legal example.

Hi Nighted,

I generally steer my readers away from file sharing, but I like the look of E-Mule. Can you give us a mini-review of it and some do's and don'ts?

We should start a new thread, if you do, put the link here so I can find it.

Morning All,
(Well, it is where I am).
I downloaded the Star Wreck movie and the xVid driver.
But when I play the movie it's super-grainy.
Is there something else I need to do or a specific player I need to watch it with?
Thanks for the help,
Nick

how big is your file?

And v.good for me (though I haven't watched it all yet).

So good infact that I could transcode it and burn it to DVD - looks as good as any other DVD4 quality film to me ...

Mouser,
I downloaded 2 files
 - star_wreck_in_the_pirkinning_subtitled_xvid.avi - 554,257 kb
 - XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe - 621 kb

I ran the Xvid software.
I then tried watching the movie with WinDVD6 and Windows Media Player but it looks like it's got a funny negative colour filter on it and is super-fine grainy - if that makes sense!

Carol,
What did you use to trans-code the movie onto DVD?

I've never used forums before - very time-consuming ... but (as BT used to say) it's nice to talk!

Now you are making me think ... my memory is getting really bad these days ...

I think I used ULEAD Video Studio or ULEAD Movie Factory 4, but I can't be sure.

Carol! How long ago did you do it that you've already forgotten which program you used!?!
Having written that, I can't remember what I did this morning, I have to write little notes so that I don't forget all the things I need to do.
How's the blog/forum going!?!

So far I have setup two experimental blog sites (both using MySQL and PHP), two wikis (both using PHP+text files, one with PHP+MySQL)
and a Drupal based site - boy is that impressive !!!

If you want to have a look (no content yet but you can get the idea) checkout ...

www.lairdswood.com/drupal

www.lairdswood.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php (yes I know I can't spell, this uses text based files to store the 'pages')
www.lairdswood.com/mediawiki

www.lairdswood.com/weblogs (based on bblog)
www.lairdswood.com/weblogs/wordpress

So far I am most impressed with Drupal (is there anything it doesn't do out of the box?)

Of the others PMWiki is quick and easy to setup and has few overheads, MediaWiki has becaome a standard (though it isn't that easy to set up or manage from the limited look I have had), no so impressed with bblog - the blog pages look ok but the whole thing feels a bit amateurish, WordPress is quite impressive (but it was hard to set up as there was a PHP bug which has survived various version updates - ridiculous).

Drupal installation was quite complicated (it meant getting your hands dirty in MySQL and if you want to prefix all your tables you have to manually edit some scripts). It wasn't helped by the fact the latest version requires a later PHP than my provider supports, and all the documentation refers tot he latest version (which is different)!!!

I'm going to write up a full description of my experiements ... coming soon

Star Wreck is hilarious! I love how it starts when he comes on to the bridge.  ;D I had tears coming out of my eyes I was laughing so hard. The copy I got is AVI and looks absolutely amazing. I hope to see more films come out like this. This wouldn't be possible without file sharing clients.

Hey Cliff, I'll definitely start a review of eMule for next week. It's going to take some time because there are so many features in the program.

File sharing is really great. A lot of websites are beginning to use ed2k links for distributing there files as it can really take a large burdon off of their bandwidth.  Also ed2k links allow anyone to host a file without having to know how to set up an FTP or having  to purchase a shell account and a domain.

Great for bands, film makers (as this topic conveys), software developers, any one. Like many things in life it can be used for good or evil. File sharing programs don't steal copy righted material, people steal copy righted material.

More in the review....it could end up being more of a fanatical rant than a review though because I really love the client. :D

I read about it at TheRegister.co.uk and immediately downloaded it - lots of fun!

I was really impressed by the graphics -they did it all on a zero budget!

I forget whether it was that one or another free movie, but I downloaded a few at home and at the office - man... at home it was a bloody nightmare trying to get a video player to play the video I downloaded. I was swearing and cursing and installing all kinds of players. At work it was real easy because I've got the alpha version of ALShow which already includes all the codecs you need to watch videos.

I don't generally install much software at home other than the things I need, and I don't install software from work on my boxes at home until the software has been released. I can't wait until ALShow is finally available... Watching stuff at work is SOOO much easier. And I've already got a bunch of commercial DVD software and stuff... It shouldn't be that hard...

Hi Renegade, codec problems? Take a look at my good friend GeorgeH's review of K-lite at his blog. George is a great guy and a very thorough reviewer. The view program that comes with K-lite is A++ in my book. I've used it for years. I can't remember finding a type of movie file it couldn't read.

Yikes! Almost forgot the link.

Yeah, the first half was the best IMHO. Great work for a fan-made movie!

IMHO E-Mule is part of the past, modern BitTorrent apps are the future.

I use BitTorrent, which is by the same team which started the BT thing. Now Opera is starting to support it as part of the browser.

BitTorrent started it all, but now they need to copy Azureus options because that's the program coming up with new ideas :) I don't know anyone who still uses the original BT client.

Ok, BrotherS, you are just going to have to provide me with a mini-review of Azureus now. I like the BT client. It's so simple. Why do I need more options?

Warning: Your response could be broadcast in my newsletter. LOL

Damn, I seem to have to do one (mini-)review... ;)

I prefer "more options" over (too) "simple", that's why I love Miranda IM (see below) and Wikimedia over more naked wikis... IMHO there's no such thing as "too many options", there are just "not yet perfect user interfaces" :)
