To help kick off our Getting Organized Experiment for 2007, I thought we would try something a little different from last time. In order to help encourage some coders who hang out at DC to write some productivity software, we are going to have a little challenge to write a "productivity" program. Your challenge: - Write a computer program (or web service) which helps people be more productive with their time.
- Highest honors go to creativity and uniqueness.
- This must be program that was not released before Nov. 1st, 2007
- Deadline is December 1st, 2007.
Prizes: - Cody mugs for all top participants.
- A feature in our newsletter.
- Donations galore!
ps. as always the programs you write are your own property to do with as you wish -- we only ask that if you decide to sell the software and not make it available as donationware, that remember the dc members on the site who helped you test it.

ps2. in general i think we are still figuring out how to handle the case where we'd like to financially reward contributors, without somehow demeaning the volunteer nature of the site. one thing we will try to do though is to try to redirect donations made to the site to people who make good stuff.
ps3. if you already have a dc mug and don't want another we will give you something of your choosing.

Hi to everyone! Write a computer program (or web service) which helps people be more productive with their time. What does "a computer program (or web service) which helps people be more productive with their time" means exactly? :-) I'd like to see one more mug in my donationcoder.com mug collection...

Getting Organized is only a motto or an aim to come together for bigger projects?

Note: A productivity-related plugin for a free/donationware program would also qualify for this challenge. A plugin for Find+Run Robot 2 would super qualify

Hi Mouser.
Thought of a little script the other day and actually got it working, which must mean 'I got something done'. Therefore I will enter and share on the 1st of December.

This contest would be a great opportunity to write a program designed to help students.

Ok, I have two applications that suit the purposes of the GOE 2007. One of them is a timer that counts interruptions, working time, and rest independently, and plots those. I call it the interruptron! The other one is a program that helps you read and write faster. It will use stats on what you read/write to help with autocompletion and to present words at the optimal speed. If everything works, it will even generate APML feeds with your attention habits: http://apml.orgNow... timing is an issue. I have an iron-set deadline for the interruptron to be ready by 30 Nov. Docs included. The other tool may be in beta by that time. Depending on how many entries we are having, I'd like to suggest an extension of the deadline. Either way, I'll do my best to get these two out by 30 Nov (l'm a last minute guy, I know )

I'm in with a little tool for people who like to edit in plaintext. This tool helps you navigate between documents more easily and you should be able to plug it into most decent text editors.

Great Arjen! That's the spirit I should say, i'm in as well! I'll try to do a little FARR plugin (maybe my timezone idea if no one else does it, or maybe a notes or quotes one), and maybe i'll have time for a little standalone utility.

I am trying to get version 0.3 of HowLong2It in before the midnight deadline. It is based on one of the suggestions of a member.

Some cool stuff! Blaster cool your jets We're always just a little slow around here ending contests. Actually contest is the wrong word since there aren't any winners. But we'll post a summary of all the entries and then collect addresses to send the reward cups. The special image for the challenge is not yet drawn.

I'll be making a web page listing all of these entries (like the one at http://nany.donationcoder.com), so please make sure you all have a screenshot you like attached to your post. Anyone who wants some web space at YOURNAME.dcmembers.com just ask. If you have a website please feel free to make a web page for your app and host it there, with only a screenshot, link, and description here. Should i make a special subsection of this forum section where people can start a new thread for their program so that each will have its own thread?

All participants: You will be getting a custom rare limited edition GOE Programming Challenge mug starring our mascot Cody. If you already have a mug (or don't like mugs), please go to this cafepress shop page for donationcoder: http://www.cafepress.com/donationcoder or go to http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/ for even more products, and pick out something you want instead of a mug (don't worry about the images on the objects -- whatever you choose will have the GOE challenge cody on it). Then fill in your full name and shipping address and submit it here: http://www.donationcoder....ipts/MemberKit/index.htmlMAKE SURE TO add that this is for the GOE programming prize and specify if you want something other than a mug.

Once the web page summarizing all the entries is up, i'd like to ask everyone who likes these kinds of events on DC to send a few credits to the authors to encourage this kind of thing

Ok, I'm done with one of the programs (interruptron) and documentation... I'm building a site around it, so it'll take me a few more hours... I'm almost there

Does anyone else with a program want some web space at YOURCHOICE.dcmembers.com to host your program (and maybe a web page for it)? Might be more stable and easier than attaching to forum?
