great I usually let updating go for a while cause it's not my main browser these days & what with having to download each new version & install yourself I always forget the advantages/disadvantages of classic & non-classic installers As far as I remember I usually install for all users - I think thats the way stuff gets saved in the installation folder as opposed to user-data... I guess it will pick up on current settings anyways which are customised. (Can always make backup first in case ) if anyone could give brief summary or a link it would be much appreciated!

Using right now.Not bad.I didn't bother with the alphas.I've got a couple of glitches (don't know if their changes or bugs) i submitted them to Opera none the less. When deleting private data through the tools menu drop down,it reloads my speed dials,i don't like that, wasn't like that before. And when browsing through folders while inside the managing bookmark screen, folders seem a little "sticky" slow to draw.Just a few mild complaints.I've said it before,i never paid for this browser when it was pay,but now i would definately pay now that it's free.

tomos: Classic vs. non-classic (MSI): classic is much faster as it doesn't use Windows installer. But windows installer allows more flexibility r.e. large-scale deployment and better international support. I use the MSI installer. All-users vs. per-user: Per-user is much more flexible. I use Opera profiles extensively, which basically works by changing the per-user base directory. http://operawiki.info/OperaProfilesBut if you are just playing around, it won't make too much difference. I guess it will pick up on current settings anyways which are customised. At least for per-user, if you use e.g. Opera Betaz for install, it will use Opera betaz for user settings which will *not* overwrite your older settings. It is better to start off clean for a beta, then import bits of your older settings in. http://operawiki.info/MigratingSettingsIf you've backed up your settings, you could always just trying doing an upgrade and ignoring the seperate install advice ;-) Note, the big feature for the beta is the online Opera link, which allows transparent two-way sync between Opera Desktop <->Web<->Mobile phone http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/next/http://www.opera.com/products/link/Changelog since alpha: http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/w950b1.htmlChangelog since 9.2x: http://www.opera.com/docs...changelogs/windows/950b1/

Ah its great! Now you can search for multiple words in any website you've visited straight from the addressbar.
In the alphas when you searched for "word word" it would come up empty after the space, now it works like it should.

thanks for all those details nontroppo I used to have two different installs for me & the other "user" - we dont even have seperate user accounts In fact I still do have 2 installs, no 3 - I have the "portable" version as well - must read up your link about profiles a nice thing about opera compared to FF is that you can have separate versions of it running at the same time no problem

Still no roboform support, still no autocomplete support, still no way to edit stored passwords in the wand, I am still unable to make this MY BROWSER due to limitation by the developers and my inability to fully customize my browsing experience.

justice: "word word" worked for me in the alpha, though they have reworked the search engine code so it is probably less buggy than before. What I do want is more advanced search option (NOT as well as AND, proximity search) and as a geek I'd love regex search from the address field ... I have to say, history search is the most amazing feature to hit a browser this year for me. Interestingly, Omniweb for the Mac has had this for 3 years or so (though they don't use the address bar for search matching). And Safari 3 in Leopard is adding this feature too (indexing into spotlight, so you can search from any app, but still not using the address field). But so far Opera is the only Windows/Linux app to do this. Note URLs and history items are classified by their popularity, the more you visit, the higer it is in the list, kind of like the scoring heuristics in FARR...

Josh, I think I can fix at least one of your complaints: autocomplete. Just dl an userJS script (url in the description) The band can be converted to readable text (it's a hack, and kind of defeats the purpose), so you could retrieve passwords if needed. I agree that Opera developers have a strange way of doing things. One cannot say that Opera is not customizable -on the contrary-, it's just that it's customizable in particular ways... and some obvious ways are completely forgotten.

No, but it crashed a few times when I tried to download the headers on a newly added IMAP account. I don't really ever use email in the weekly/beta releases but I just thought I'd try it this time as there is a whole bunch of updates to M2 in 9.5. Unfortunately, it's nowhere near stable enough yet for daily use.

I've never had it crashed once yet and using gmail with IMAP and the searching of 3 years worth of e-mail is instant. I really like it. Everytime firefox catches up with Opera they manage to bring out a new version with significant improvements.

urlwolf: is the crash reproducible? If so, could you please report it: http://www.opera.com/support/search/view/790/Thanks! Dirhael: I assume you *don't* want to try to reproduce your crash ;-) Opera Mail is really solid here. One log-awaited feature that sneaked it into the beta is remote deletion for POP servers - this is the best new mail feature for my needs (i.e. you can leave mail on server, but if you delete items it will also delete just those items on the server. justice: did you switch to IMAP from POP for Google - how does it work?

Well, very reproducible, but not very useful. I just start 9.5, it asks me to import mail, then it shows a progress bar, and dies in a few miliseconds

Well, IIXII will be able to log an EIP pointer to the crash and I can forward it to the correct developer. Note there is another tool for the hardcore bug hunter: http://people.opera.com/axel/memguara.exe - this is the kestrel version http://people.opera.com/axel/memguard.htmMemGuard is a full replacement for Opera.exe plus extra memory guarding features to complement Inspector IIXII. It ensures that any kind of bad memory access, e.g. dangling pointers or buffer overruns, will cause an immediate crash, instead of causing random crashers and thus useless crash logs potentially minutes later. Furthermore, random or hard-to-reproduce crashers will become reproducible. Try to always use MemGuard when creating crash logs. MemGuard also detects memory leaks and provides a way to analyse runtime memory usage. Axel has quite an interesting story. He was an Opera user and assembly programmer. When he didn't like a feature or want a new one he would dissasemble and reverse engineer Opera and patch it to do what he wanted. Opera realised his talents and offered to pay him to do the same thing ;-)

Behold ... menguara.exe actually lasted about 2-3 seconds before crashing (23/23495 in the progress bar!).
Now I have a log. Where do I send it to? If you know the correct developer, should I send it to you? Note: PMs do not allow attachemnts.
Thanks!

Wow that looks like a great tool. Does anyone else get crashes from Quicktime? Video's that crash look garbled (in purple) just before opera crashes due to quicktime. I've seen it happen on another machine with Internet explorer so it's not Opera but it's relaly annoying.

urlwolf: great, I suspect it will be fixed in the next build ;-)
justice: memguard won't pick up crashes with plugins, only with Opera itself (and plugins can make it look if the brower crashes as they run inside its process -- they can also make a browser appear to use lots of memory when it isn't). Note, Kestrel is building in some kind of enhanced plugin crash protection to stop them pulling the browser down with them...

Exactly the same here (the latest build is 9624, though). Stable, fast, just with minor inconsistencies--but it's a beta, isn't it? After many years finally a great leap to higher compatibility.

urlwolf: whaddya tell ya! kalos: that warning was added because a number of users have thrown hissy fits like petulant teenagers when they found a bug. For a great number of beta testers though, Kestrel is pretty rock solid (as it is for me, I use it full time). And as urlwolf will attest, a well placed bug report will do more to improve the software than moaning that alpha/beta software is buggy.
