Sorry about that -- after some initial reports i pushed out another update. Not my best moment.

Version 2.102.02 - Oct 3, 2011
  • [BugFix] Alias contents that used % variables were not showing their application icons if a default icon was specified for alias -- thanks Ulf.
  • [BugFix] The new advanced option to block saving of settings was enabled by default (STUPID).
  • [BugFix] The updater dialog was not showing program name.

I upgraded today, and all of my own aliases were gone.  It turns out that the myaliases.alias and myaliases.alias.bak file were both overwritten with empty ones.  :(

Thankfully, I had a copy of the files on another hard drive, that I think was only missing 1 alias in it.  8)

wow i really messed up this latest farr release.. :(
it seems i accidentally created a blank myaliases.alias file in the setup distribution, and it will overwrite on install on any XP machine.
if you use XP and FARR and updated and have created custom aliases.  go to your Aliases/MyCustom/Myasliases.alias file and make a copy of your myaliases.alias or myalias.alias.bak file and hopefully you still have a good copy of them.

do this BEFORE you go to your myaliases alias in the program settings!

i have fixed the installer now for anyone who updated from here on.

i'm so sorry i hope i didn't end up erasing anyone's aliases  :( :( :(

This is an important update for windows XP users who install version 2.102.02; just install it over old version and it will automatically recover your backup myalias.alias file of your custom aliases, if (and only if) the main one is blank because of the mistake in the previous installer.

Note: It is important that you not go into options to examine your old myaliases file before running this, as that might cause your backup alias file to be blanked.  I apologize for any inconvenience.

Version 2.102.03 - Oct 4, 2011
  • [BugFix] Restores previous custom myaliases.alias.bak file automatically if it was erased by previous installer bug.
  • [MinorFeature] Better backing up of alias files after editing.

With latest version on Windows 7 32 bit, it shows an icon on the TaskBar as well as in the system tray.  Right click on icon in the TaskBar and select Close Window. It doesn't close.

For now I fixed it by reinstalling 2.99.02

Wow that is odd.. I wonder if this has to do with what f0dder jibz warned me about -- putting the version # in the icon hint.. I can't think of anything else i did to cause a change in this.

Anyone else noticing this as well?

Miles, email me and I'll send you a link to a version that doesn't have the version# in the system tray icon hint -- let's see if that solves it: [email protected]

Based on Miles test -- that looks like the cause.  +1 point for f0dder jibz.
I've replaced the uploaded version with the new one, without a version change; so if you want the fix just re-download.
I will release an official update soon.

How to make a secure update? I have a properly working and configured version 2.99.02. I use it in portable mode.I want to upgrade. Which files must be overwritten ? Only FindAndRunRobot.exe ?

You can just unpack the new files on top of the old ones -- except for the one mess up above which is now fixed -- your configuration files won't be messed with.

Usually its just the FindAndRunRobot.ext that is updated, and the help file.  But future updates could change other files.

Just a note. The help file still says to check the option in General Tab to copy selected text on open. You actually have to edit the start hotkey pause/break entry.  Took me a while to find it. Makes it handy for looking stuff up in dictionary from any app. :)

Version 2.104.01 - Feb 14, 2012
  • [MajorFeature] Executable and setup are now digitally signed for extra security; instead of a zip-compatible installer, there are now 2 separate downloads for installer and portable version.
  • [BugFix] When using the -launch commandline call, and several other unusual places where files were launched, custom plugins were not being given a chance to take over launching.
  • [BugFix] Some windows 7 start menu items were failing to launch (for example the Snipping tool)
  • [MinorFeature] Added context menu item to run the selected result "as admin"
  • [MinorFeature] New option in custom font overides to set statusbar font size same as small text fontsize.

Please redownload the new version 2.104.02 -- the version i uploaded was a debug build which will write run significantly slower than real release build that I just uploaded now.

Thanks especially for:

Re: SnippingTool...
Failed to verify the following:

[BugFix] Some windows 7 start menu items were failing to launch (for example the Snipping tool)

SnippingTool.exe doesn't appear to show up here via FARR (via typing SnippingTool.exe as well as via c:\windows\system32\snipping).  I am able to drag and drop SnippingTool.exe on to the edit field of FARR's main window (starting from Windows Explorer), but pressing Enter doesn't appear to launch anything.  FWIW, SnippingTool.exe does launch via Windows Explorer.

This testing was done under Windows 7 Pro 64-bit -- and FARR 2.104.2.

FARR v2.104.02 does find the Snipping Tool.lnk from my start menu and launch the tool. This testing was done under Windows 7 Pro 64-bit also. What fun, a moving target!

Thanks to lanux128 for some tips.  SnippingTool will launch from FARR here if it's via the .lnk locatable via the Start Menu.

Is anyone else getting new exception errors under win7 with one of my plugins installed?  I have a feeling that the new use of a manifest file in the new build of FARR is causing windows to be more strict about plugins trying to save their options under program files\ instead of in user doc area.  I think i may have to release an update of my plugins asap..

I uploaded new versions of all my plugins that should fix the problem I hope.

Under Win7-64 Home Premium, running FARR v2.104.02:
SnippingTool.exe:
%windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe (is the link in the Start Menu) - does not execute in FARR.
C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe - does not execute in FARR.
C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe.lnk - does not execute in FARR.
C:\Workdata.001\Download\SnippingTool.exe.lnk - DOES execute in FARR.

Conclusion: a .lnk for SnippingTool will execute only if it is outside of the C:\Windows\System32\ directory.

after some discussion with hamradio, we noticed that the missing snipping tool is related to a windows component called "tablet pc component". it is worth a try to see if that is consistent with all the other PCs plagued with this problem.
