One of the features i want to add very soon is an OPTION to say that FARR should not try to match aliases or plugins unless you start your search with a special character.  this could help avoid situations where people are having aliases accidentally trigger when they dont want them to.

so if the option was enabled for example then if you just type search words it will only match against files on your disk.
and to get an alias you would do like @music, at which point it would ONLY match against aliases.

That did it.  Which of those aliases can I uncheck without disturbing the launching function?  Which is all I use anyway.

Thanks!

maybe you could do it by adding a new dosearch command :
"dosearchinsidealiasesandplugins"

that way one could specify how to trigger it

Not sure if that's what the update was today or not.. fixing the version info.. but in the help file it now says the latest version is 2.24.01 but has the same changelog as the update 2.23.01. Which isn't actually present in the help file.

mouser,

I have never noticed this before so I think it is a new behavior. In XP Pro, when Dcupdater auto-installs a new version of FARR, FARR immediately restarts when the installation is complete.  On my notebook, running Vista Ultimate, it has always done the same as far as I can remember.  But after the installation of 2.24.01 it did not; I had to start FARR manually from the Start>All Programs menu.

Must be an issue in Vista because after the XP Pro installation via Dcupdater FARR restarted itself.

yep. it's by design.  i dont have FARR start after installation on vista because installs on vista run as admin wheras the program itself shouldnt.

Got it.  Maybe it was not restarting on the notebook all along and I just missed it before.

Thanks!

New version uploaded.

This adds a long requested feature, non-contiguous matching.
So searching for "ffox" will match "fire fox".

The scoring favors letters that start words and are in sequence.

This is enabled by default (see option on Search Behaviors tab), and can slow down searching a little bit if enabled; but it is very useful.

Hope you like it!

Hm. Only one problem I see with it so far.. can we make it so that if an alias matches it will ignore the fuzzy options? When I type the alias for my blog (nutang) it includes a whole long list of other files that have the same letters.

EDIT: Hm. I just checked the box for "stop search on exact alias match" which ends that problem.

Mouser. Any chance we could get FARR to treat program names like aliases? You have the option to stop search on exact alias match.. can we get an option to do the same for exact program match?

is it ever the case where an exact program name match isnt the top result? if not, why does it matter?

Actually, that was exactly the case that I posted about in so much frustration above!!

I had never used FARR for anything except launching programs and when I typed in "Music" trying to launch Music Collector, there were like 20 or so music web sites shown -- but Music Collector was not showing!  I changed the option for number of results to something higher - 30 or 40, can't remember - and then Music Collector showed near the bottom of the list.

I unchecked the aliases as oyu suggested so that wouldn't happen.  Of course if I were wanting to use the alias searches that would stop it.

Thanks!

Jim

WOW  :o

Great job with the non-contiguous searching. I know this is going to be one of those features where we dont how we ever managed without it  ;).

I don't know why, but when I type ffox, firefox doesn't show.

The shortcut name for FireFox is "Mozilla Firefox.lnk"

What am I doing wrong? Or is there a conflicting option that I've selected?

AFAICT, the only option affecting non-contiguous searching/scoring is the "score non-contiguous matches" option.

Just out of curiosity - since you are in the midst of improving different matching methods - one of the few things that I miss about Launchy was that I could mis-type the name of a program (the right letters, but in the wrong order) and it would still match.

I'm guessing that most of the matching in FARR is by regex (?) so maybe this isn't possible to do.  Frequently, I will type "tuh" or instead of "thu" when I want to launch Thunderbird...  Launchy somehow would still make the match, but FARR won't.

Is this even possible?  Ultimately I should learn to type better, faster but I haven't been able to break my "keyboard dyslexia" yet.

Thanks!
