Hey Mouser,

Just updated from 2.34.01 to 2.45.01, but now the FARR window always stays open after launching anything (just using the Enter key to launch the #1 result). Any thoughts? I have downgraded to 2.34.01 for now.

Running WinXP SP3 (only FarrMilk 0.4.4 as plugin right now, just reinstalled everything).

I have the same issue. I think I updated from 2.34.01 as well.

can you see if its one of the plugins that might be causing the stay-open behavior?

I updated on my desktop PC running XP Pro and my Vista Ultimate notebook and it seems to be OK on both.

Try exiting FARR and running it again. I had the same problem, and this fixed it right away. Might help to know what caused it, though.

It works now. I installed 2.45.01 again over 2.34.01 and the problem never occurs again it seems. The only difference I know is I updated FarrMilk from 0.4.4 to 0.4.5, this might have been the cause.

This brings me to the following though; would it be possible to allow the user to customize what is being installed? For example, I never use the built-in aliases (installed to %farrdir%\AliasGroups\Installed) and I always change the contents of the %farrdir%\Scripts directory. When I update FARR it keeps restoring the default files (it does *keep* my changed ones, though). After every installation I have to manually delete these again. Not a big deal by any means; but if you could change the installer a bit to offer a 'normal installation' and a 'custom installation' it would be nice. The custom installation would include:

[ ] FindAndRunRobot core files (required) | would be checked and disabled
[ ] Plugin templates | or whatever you would call the existing *.dcupdate files for many plugins which are available in %farrdir%\Plugins
[ ] Standard aliases | the files in %farrdir%\AliasGroups\Installed
[ ] Special files and locations | the files in %farrdir%\Scripts\

Again, not a big deal but a nice touch imho. Everything about farr is so totally customizable, the installer just kinda lags behind on this.

From http://techreviews.i...lication-in-windows/:

When I was planning to write about FindandRun Robot. I was wondering why would someone need it on a Windows 7 or for that matter a Windows Vista machine. I totally understand it’s need on prior versions of Windows before Windows Vista. But after I installed and started using it I was in love with this utility. Also, it’s much more advanced than Vista or Windows 7 “Search programs and files” feature.

Mouser, why don't you stop dipsy-doodling about with FARR and get on with Windows8?

I noticed that you revised/updated the online Help file. Thank you for that! The only issue I have with FARR is trying to do more beyond just launching applications and finding out that the documentation/instructions are kind of spread out all over the place! The online help was usually a few versions behind, the plugin instructions - which I just found BTW - are on a completely separate page by themselves, and other than that there are tips and other info all through the forum threads.

Being a little on the basic side (that pretty much means "slow on the uptake" I guess), if documentation isn't organized like in a standard user manual, I get lost pretty quickly.  :o

But I am getting there slowly, surely, intrepidly.  8)  And I promise to do my best to pull all the documentation together and create a PDF user manual by the time I "get" it all.  :)

Send me a copy of that PDF, will ya? Except for opening stuff and going through directories, I don't use (lack of knowledge) any of FARR's other features.

If FARR expands much more, it will become an OS!  ;D

And you'll be doing most FARR users a service!
In a way, though, I'll miss the great FARR detective game a.k.a. hmmm what was that alias again?

For a start, there's no quick launch in win7. You can get it back but it doesn't stick, for now, reboot and it's gone. (at least on my PC) :D

I know about the 'super bar' but I don't like having everything 'jumping into my face', it better stays hidden, this way I see it when I need it.

I don't really have the time to fool around with win7, so FARR  is the tool that finds the stuff on my computer.

Please fix this or maybe provide some settings where one can specify that the window should be centered and what size or even better which margins to the sides of the screen it should have. The last one would in fact be much better as FARR would nicely adjust itself to changing screen resolutions.
For centering you could use my FarrMultiMonitor (and center) plugin: https://www.donation....msg117762#msg117762

That wouldn't solve your other problem however...

Thanks for the pointer to the multimonitor plugin. Since I don't use multiple monitors I ignored this plugin. It's centering feature makes FARR's shrinking behavior bearable and the shrinking even seems to stop at some point. Very strange.

Ever since moving FARR away from C drive, the updater pops up in sys tray but does nothing! I have to keep manually checking?

I was thinking about extending the FARR Multimonitor plugin to allow resizing the FARR window to some percentage of the screen's width. It turned out not to be very easy though and I haven't got much time to experiment at the moment. Obviously, it would only be fighting the symptoms.

I've uploaded a beta with a bunch of new features.. I've kept it as a separate download because it has a few changes that i want to make sure dont cause problems before a final release.  feedback is appreciated.

Thanks for the new features :)

%APPDRIVE% seems to be working nicely here, hurray!

BTW, any examples for the following?

In an alias contents you can now specify #filecontents fullfilenamewithpathhere (can use %ALIASDIR%), to have the contents of the file dumped into the alias results when searching.

Hmm, icon is still there in systemtray for me (I enabled to hide when minimized). It does blink when I dismiss FARR but is still present. Why not disable it all together, instead of just when minimized? Does that mean the icon would pop up every time I call FARR  :-\?

I'm bringing up an issue again that I aired earlier in the topic of the Everything plugin concerning incorrectly displayed danish letters (and other special chars i reckon).

After a bit of thinking, I was wondering if it might be something in the FARR core?

For a description of the "showing characters from weird languages" problem, see:
https://www.donation....msg147302#msg147302

Sorry if this seems like nonsense, I'm a bit tired.

/Jes.
