Flash Renamer free on Giveaway of the Day today, 2007-09-20
« on: September 20, 2007, 03:56 AM »
Giveaway of the Day - Flash Renamer: September 20, 2007.  Normal price $19.95.

This is one of the ones mentioned in Zaine Ridling's Great Software List and has been mentioned in various DC threads.

Flash Renamer is a time saver for people with large amounts of files, eg digital camera owners, webmasters & media collectors (music/images/movies). It renames many files at once, so called batch or bulk renaming. With Flash Renamer you can automate thousands of file renames in a single click!

Rename filters include set casing, MP3 renaming, find/replace, set attributes, add & crop strings, sequential numbering and an advanced format function.

Worth the free price???

I saw it but I wondered how this is any better than a regular renamer? I use BulkRenamer.

I use BRU too, in general. It's my favorite. But I like Flash Renamer's presets and "preset manager", and its "Visual Assist" feature (allows you to quickly copy selections in the right fields, etc.). I also like its "Free Select tool". I find the interface clear and well thought for fast changes.

I use BRU for more complex simultaneous changes on file names. If you use BRU, it's certainly not essential...

There are a few types of applications that no developer should even consider building:
  • File rename
  • Backup
  • MP3 tag editor
  • Multimedia format converter

Does the world really need any more of these? Aren't the ones that we have sufficient?  :o

What about simple notepad replacements? I think we are up to around 9 million of those with most not having anything special to set them apart. I'm not talking about robust editors like Notepad++ or PSPad.

Is there really *any* program that a programmer shouldn't consider developing?  Sure we have a lot of specific categories, but if someone has a different slant on something, or just wants to do it, who's to say that there isn't a market for their idea/that they shouldn't?

Flash Renamer is one of the better renamer app according to DC folks here, so i might give it a go..  also speaking of categories of software, that's why we have a "What's the Best?" board and also drop by here and pick your favorite file manager.. :)

What's the Best?

Well, of course they're within their rights to do so. But building a business plan around a bulk renamer or an MP3 tag editor is clearly destined for failure.

Giveaway of the Day has a long comment thread on Flash Renamer, most of it saying why would you pay for this when so many good free equivalents are available.  The author commented he first released it in 1999.  I'd be surprised if much competition existed then.  I.e., his business model was probably fine in 1999, it's subsequent developments that make it look in ill health.  Yet Flash Renamer is still good enough to appeal to some folk...
