Ultra Recall lacked two very important features:

1) It did not fully support Unicode

2) The interface and manual were only available in english.

A commercial software must widen its intended audience by offering features for non-english speaking users, it's really a must today.

27
You can ask the developer of NoteCase Pro to include the features that you want. He has a blog where he wrote recently: "Many users are now being more active in sending their improvement ideas, so if you have one, don't hesitate :) ". Any feedback is really welcomed, he answers to e-mails in 1-2 days.

The MAD plugin is only for mp3. But if you have ogg files you can add ReplayGain tags by using VorbisGain. Unzip the program archive in a folder, for example in C:\vg . Make a copy of your ogg files in a folder, for example in C:\ogg . Then open a DOS (command prompt) window, launch replaygain.exe and input a command to add tags to all the files in the ogg folder. The command will look like this:

C:\vg\release>vorbisgain c:\ogg

Press Enter and the files will be processed.

AIMP supports some normalization natively : DSPManager>Auto-normalize sound volume

And it supports ReplayGain via the "Input MAD" plugin (copy the files in the AIMP PlugIns folder, then activate RG in the Input MAD options) :

But recently I've tried spider player, and... damn! it sounds better than anything I've tested before. It seems to be doing something at 32-bit instead of 16. I never thought that would make a difference. But it does. If anyone wants to play with it and report here, I'd love to see if other people find it better sounding too.

Is it the 32-bit processing? If so, why are not all players doing it?
I'd love to hear if there's anything one can do to make MM work at 32-bit, then. Because spider is very basic, it doesn't even talk to last.fm.

Spider Player sounds good, indeed. But it does not support DSP plugins, so AIMP + DSPplugin sounds better (for example AIMP+AudioProc).

It's not about 16 or 32 bit. Spider Player uses 16 bit by default and can be changed to 32 bit in the sound options (I noticed no difference). AIMP also can use 32 bit (Options>Playing).

LE: Well, Spider supports Winamp DSP plugins (it has by default one named "Equalizer by nevi"), and they are available from the DSP Manager which can be displayed by clicking on a little button with a speaker on it, that is present in the Equalizer panel (which must be displayed of course). I did not click on that button previously because it is identical to those used for the mute/unmute function.

Then write a feature request to Artem Izmaylov (the author of AIMP) : address is in the "About" section.

I wrote him usually about the language file and he answered in 1-5 days.

There is no need for that button, you can do it easier. AIMP supports global shortcuts, so all you have to do is to define a combination of keys for the deletion of the played file (which is selected by default).

Main button of AIMP (left-corner)>Hotkeys>Physically delete selected>Global>Pause/Break (as an example)>Enter (to confirm the deletion)

AIMP (click on External Mirror in the download page to get the 2.5 beta version) is my music player of choice, once I discovered that it can use the DSP plugins for Winamp (basically the DLL of the plugin must be copied in the PlugIns folder of AIMP, then activated from inside the extension panel of AIMP and finally selected in the AIMP DSP-Manager, where the Options button allows to modify the plugin audio settings).

Recommended DSP plugins (all are free):

Stereo Tool

AudioProc

Sound Solution 1.31

P.S. Curt, AIMP does not need a "delete button" because it can delete a selection (one or more files) by pressing Shift+Del.

Try also Movie Saver, it has a very simple interface. It is free after registering by e-mail (in two steps, check your spam folder each time).

Try EditPad Lite (free) and Pro (shareware). Both can open large files (<2 GB) very fast.

Try also NoteCase (free version) and NoteCase Pro (shareware). Both work on Windows and Linux.

The lightest IM that supports MSN is probably aMSN.

You could try also Trillian, it can connect to the MSN network.

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon or Avant?
« on: April 20, 2008, 07:01 AM »
Maxthon 2 and Avant 11 use similar resources, this can be confirmed by monitoring them with Windows Task Manager (actually in my tests Maxthon uses less memory than Avant).

Avant may be marginally faster (not in my opinion), but that's probably because Maxthon has a powerful Ad Blocker and blocks a lot of the publicity before rendering the page.

The lightest on resources is GreenBrowser, an IE clone similar to Maxthon or Avant.

However, regardless of what the program's author says, Mempad does not fully support Unicode. The romanian letters Ș and Ț (S and T with comma below) cannot be written inside Mempad, the software displays question marks instead (??). It's the sign that Unicode is not fully supported. From the notetakers only NoteCase and Flashnote are fully compatible with Unicode.

Kartal, you can insert date/time with AkelPad very easily.

Edit>Insert Date (Ctrl+D)

Try AkelPad, it should do the job. It is free and open source.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ultra Explorer; I am impressed!
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:27 PM »
Ultra Explorer is fully Unicode compatible, which is a very useful feature for many non-english users that want to use file names in their own language. The file managers that are fully Unicode compatible at this time are no more than 4 or 5.

General Software Discussion / Re: SIW RSS feed

The SIW feed looks well in FeedDemon and GreatNews. Abilon was a good feed reader for its time, but now it is obsolete (just like Omea, which also has been discontinued). Use one of the two feed readers specified below.

For those that still use Maxthon 1.6, I would recommend switching to GreenBrowser (also based on IE) if resource consumption is a problem.

GreenBrowser: http://www.morequick.com/indexen.htm

=====================

Also it must not be forgotten that Maxthon 2.x has an anti-ads module ("Ad Hunter") that is in part responsible for consuming CPU resources, especially if the option "Enable Text Filter & Filter Packs" is checked. Actually next to the option there is a warning about that ("Text Filter may consume more CPU resource") written by the programmers of Maxthon. But as I said I did not notice an exaggerated CPU consumption for prolonged periods of time, even if the text filter for Ad Hunter is enabled. On a side note, the anti-ads module included in Maxthon 2.x is very good.

48
I am using Maxthon 2.0.8 and although I see the RAM usage above 100 MB when opening many tabs (probably 10 or more), I don't see a prolonged CPU usage above 10% (when opening tabs it can spike close to 95%, but after rendering the pages it is back to normal, under 10%).

General Software Discussion / Re: Stickies 6.5a released

It does not have Unicode support, which is important for many users, myself included. I think that all the programs used for writing text should be Unicode compatible from now on, that guarantees a larger userbase.
