General Software Discussion / PowerGREP 5 released

PowerGREP 5 were released a week or so ago. They've added quite a bit of functionality
since PG4, such as regex recursion, subpatterns, replacement string conditionals,
balancing groups and so on.

Note: The trial is free, but the full version isn't.
Release Notes

It isn't obvious from the release notes, but the replacement string conditionals
are recursive. In other words, you can wrap conditionals inside other conditionals
to make it satisfy several conditions before said conditional output a text.

I've been a rather satisfied customer of PowerGREP etc for years, as
a search in these forums will tell you.

Another program allowing you to do just about anything to a filename is PFrank.
It allows you to chain together search&replace regexes, commands, etc which are all applied sequentially to each filename.
It isn't really userfriendly (soo many options++), but it is quite good.

Just make sure you install the correct version (separate versions for XP and earlier, and Vista/W7+).
The latter still uses virtualstore (iow, the program tries to save in its own folder), so it isn't perfect but.

I've never had such issues but I'm using ESET AV.
I really like v11, especially because its scripting abilities is frequently expanded on, and there
are frequent beta's to the next minor version.

OK - Either Macecraft is at it again, or someone is appropriating their name and trying to pull something.

I just received an email - ostensibly from Macecraft - offering their latest - jv16 PowerTools X. Now we have already seen where Jouni - the developer - has moved to Thailand and left his staff stuck to answer questions, all without pay. Why would we believe that he is back developing this program?

Oh - and the URL it tries to send you to is an odd one. Definitely not the old Macecraft site. (I didn't try it - don’t want to catch anything).

You know, it's coming soon..or so it says, once a month or so.

Why?? I assume he's continuing to sell nonexistent versions.

Ron's Renamer - I am not sure whether your product supports

1/ Regular Expressions (which flavor? Java?)
2/ Regular Expressions : Lookahead and Lookbehinds  (currently there are hardly any renamers supporting this feature, found FlexRenamer that does this to some extend)
3/ Piping with the lookaheads, like: (?<!((this|or|that)) - FlexRenamer does not support this, I have not found any renamer supporting this.

I kind of have the same questions as you. My current renamers are PFrank and DOpus 11.

To your question about a renamer that supports lookahead/lookbehind.
Ever heard of PFrank? It uses Python 2.4 regexes.
Just make sure to dowload the version for your system (I guess the one that works for W7 also works with W8).

Not really sure what you mean about piping (you ask about lookahead, but the example does a lookbehind).

Edit: Ouch, I guess I need to remember to check the posting date.

Directory Opus 11 -  Advanced filemanager that can be scripted using Active Scripting engines (VBScript, JScript and more).
EditPad Pro - The best syntax editor I know about to date. The downside is that it doesn't have scripting (although it can record/play macros).
PowerGrep - Advanced textmanipulation tool using regexes.
RegexBuddy - Creating and testing regexes.

K-Lite Codec Pack mega
PFrank - Free multi-regex renamer. Can also use predefined commands, assorted tags etc.

While DOpus does phone home you can block it in your firewall from doing so & DOpus will keep functioning normally with no complaints last I checked which means you could even use DOpus on a computer with no internet connection and suffer no ill effects.

If "check for news and product updates" is enabled it "phones home" to check that once a week (or whatever your setting says).
You can disable it if you want to.

I really think that the key is flexibility. If I were to release an application, and a user contacted me in that situation, I would be willing to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. That said, based on the email reply, I feel that my request would be met with deaf ears based on how they replied to the discount.

If you're close to a year in, I don't really see how they'd do that. It would probably apply to too many customers among other things.
If it were a 1-3 months since the purchase of the previous major version, then its far more common to have a free upgrade to the new version.

Btw, Just Great Software (PowerGrep, RegexBuddy, EditPad Pro etc) is one of the few I've seen that actually has one year of free major upgrades
after a product purchase. NB! I've purchased several of their products, but I'm not associated with them.

Btw, in DO10 with just about every update, in addition to bugfixes there was a somewhat steady stream of bigger and smaller
improvements and/or additions through the years.

I assume they keep it up in DO11.

I'm just genuinely trying to make an economic calculation for myself, and I haven't been able to find sufficient articulation of the benefits to be able to make that calculation. BTW, I own two v. 10 PRO licenses at the moment and using Dopus on 3 machines (2 PCs, 1 netbook).

As for the features added, it's true that there are no 'killer' features added, but I think it's a lot of nice additions that improve the experience as a whole.

Well, maybe not 'killer' features, but I really appreciate that now you can use jscript/vbscript/whatever for more than
renaming (without "abusing" rename scripting). It also exposes many parts to those hosts (which it didn't in earlier versions).

The file display bar was also nice. No need for a border + location bar, now they're the same, and can be customized just like any toolbar.

Yes, I understand that major releases do not occur often. That said, the typical period of upgrades between major revisions in the software industry is within the last year. A whopping three months for a free upgrade to V11 leaves me with a very sour taste in my mouth given that I was not privy to many of those "updates" since DO10 was put out.

I have to admit I'm not exactly a fan of having only a small window of upgrade pricing, hence why I replied to that particular post (and not the one above).
I felt a need to mention that major versions isn't released often due to the "....into a product I have already invested 80 bucks into just shy of a year ago".

I prefer to take my time upgrading software, although some I tend to upgrade immediately due to earlier positive experience (it might not always be wise, but).
For me, DOpus is and has been in that category.

Btw, new releases and betas are listed/published here.

Well, the new major versions aren't released that often, and there are alot of updates (and beta's) inbetween.

Dec 2007 I bought DO 9 (it was AUD 64 at the time, pro/light didn't exist).
Apr 2011 I upgraded to DO 10 (pro/light was introduced in the later years, everyone that had already purchased got Pro).
Mar 2014 I upgraded to DO 11 Pro.

We know that several people get a bad restore from an image.

An user said an interesting thing: the image must be created from a not running OS, I mean from outside, from a backup program functioning in an USB key.
May that advice be the way to create a safe/safer image?

Well it might, but it shouldn't be needed.

I use StorageCraft's ShadowProtect Desktop 5 (not free), and I've never really had any issues with it. It is a bit expensive initially (but includes 1 year mainteance).

Their backup solutions is mostly targeted as businesses and such so they focus on doing what they're supposed to, and doing it well, instead of adding lots of bells and whistles.

It can quickly image just about any drive/partition, supports differentials and incrementals, can program times and whatnot.
For a full drive/partition (that is in use) restore you have to boot a CD/DVD/whatever (most recent version uses a Linux iso, or you can build a WinPE iso).
It restores a drive/partition very quickly. It can do bare-metal restores.

You can also mount the image as a drive while in windows, so its easy access for extracting files from it.
One thing I haven't tried, but which it also says it can, is booting an image as a VM.

Btw, I'm not affiliated with the product, I'm just a satisfied customer and has been for 4+ years.

Edit: I just noticed, it apparently got PC Magazine's Editors Choice for the third time sept 2013.

One the other hand, I've had good luck with my lifetime license purchases. The two that I have where there has been some controversy (AnyDVD and USB Safely Remove), I think were treated reasonably by the vendor. Though clearly some people disagree.

Regarding AnyDVD I agree with you, as they kept their word (Free updates until: forever) regarding those that had purchased before a set date, which also was
notified of a couple of months beforehand so people could get on that "train" before the date came.
I have USB Safely Remove too, but I haven't checked if it still works after that change.

I had one bad experience with lifetime license, and that was for Konvertor (by Logipole, and that product also included KontextViewer at that time), when they
changed all licenses (including existing users) without any compensation or anything else.
It went from All future versions are free for registered users to Your license will remain valid for a period of 12 months from the purchase date.
The "Konvertor is also an "add-on" for Windows Explorer" as it says on the archived link refers to what's now called KontextViewer being part of the product.

I'm hoping for something reasonable to eventually replace Windows 7. I don't use a tablet, *pad, touchscreen or
whatever you call it today, so I sure don't need an os built more or less exclusively for that target.
Exclusive as in the differences between W7 and W8. Most of what's new seems to be in the
"built for tablet's, *pads, touchscreens etc" part which apparently leaves much to be desired if you don't
have a touchscreen of some sort.

Remove that "modern ui", "metro" or whatever it's called and you basically have windows 7 excluding the
start menu/panel. Or so it seems. Btw, to me "Modern UI" implies the other one is "legacy".

Btw, where do you even get proper versions of it btw (i.e not OEM or upgrade)?
All I've seen is alot of campaigns for upgrade versions which requires an earlier version of windows to be installed.
In my experience there is nothing which creates more problems, etc than upgrading windows instead of a new install.

Now... about QR codes... It's a completely silly concept (qualified below). There's no way that anyone is going to be running around town and see some QR code and think to themselves, "Hey! I need to go and find out what that bizarre looking squiggly square is, then look for software than can decrypt it for me so that I can try and find some web site..." JFC... That's total insanity. QR can only work if it is pre-installed on all (or most) devices. Nobody cares about funky squares. They're meaningless wastes of space for most people. That is... Until it reaches past critical penetration, which it is very far from right now. (Yeah... I tend to piss on stuff early... I know...) But we've already seen this fail several times before. The QR code thing is just the new kid on the block, and he'll get his black eyes as well before long. (Unless there is serious industry intervention.)

That is, adding in an additional layer before people can get to the data is simply too much to ask. (Yes - I know what I just said, and the implications, but the installable software question is an entirely different level of commitment on the part of the recipient.)

It's a bit OT, but I had to arrest you regarding the QR codes.
They're not exactly new, invented in Japan in 1994 by Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave to track vehicles during manufacturing,
registered with AIM since 1997, ISO (something) since 2000, and readers exists for just about anything
symbian, android, iphone, pc, in addition to specialized readers etc.

Nowadays it's either included or freely available to just about anything portable which has a camera.
Basically, I think QR codes is almost as well known as barcodes now, just that the man in the street can actually use the former, and QR codes can provide alot more information.

Right now the foreground color is checked against the brightness of the background color.  Your idea seems like one I may implement soon on the color or at least have the option of overriding the contrasting feature to set your own global foreground color. That way it could be either user set or use the color warlock function that determines what it should be based on the brightness of it. I cant promise when I can get around to working on it again, but hopefully sometime in the next few weeks.

If you go with the "set your own global foreground color", please make it so you can set it straight from the menu or something.
Maybe store it to the current color config.

In addition, it might have something like a "Use Custom Foreground color(s)" toggle to enable/disable custom colors, i.e it remembers the foreground color(s)
for the current set, but doesn't apply it/them unless that toggle is checked.

It's claimed that this post is rather old, but it's listed on the "contact us" in the help, so..

I'm using 2.0.0.11.
It would be nice if it were possible to set the text/foreground color for one or all of the colors in the list.
If the colors is to be used as background colors, then it's nice to have a way to see if it 'fits'
the expected foreground color (and the other way around).

Apparently the code is mostly present already, as the foreground seem to change on its own
at times (example Random Colors: #800080 has white foreground, while #D5FB14 have a black(ish) foreground).

It'd be nice if there was a way to generate a variable number of of colors fitting a certain foreground color
optionally as far from eachother as possible, i.e easily distinguishable from eachother, and where the text can
also be easily read.

I encountered the latter function in a program several years ago, but I can't remember which program it was (it had to
do with css/html editing though).

I just wanted to give my thanks (just what I was looking for), and a minor suggestion/bugreport/whatnot..

At the moment it crashes if placed as a subfolder of "program files" (or in my case "program files (x86)" unless the security restrictions of that
folder is lifted (i.e given write access) because it wants to store settings.dat in the program folder.
After a crash it is tagged in appcompat with "disableuserexceptions".
I'm using W7x64.

Removing it from the appcompat list, giving it write permissions, then it runs ok.

One thing I seriously liked in EPP6, and which seems to have gotten even better is the possibility to define any language for
syntax coloring. If it doesn't have it already, and you can't download it from others (which made and uploaded it) within the program,
just make it yourself somewhat easily (at least if you know regular expressions as those are more or less completely regex driven).

I have UltraEdit Studio 11 and NoteTab too, but regarding syntax coloring etc, EPP seems unbeatable.
