Yeah, I really don't like having to open up the system tray icon, find the right item, and then stop it.  There ought to be an easier way to do that based on the drive letter, for example.

Sounds like a handy app.  I have a GeoShell plugin (geoList) that covers this area quite nicely, though.

Best Firewall / Re: A thank you for the Best Firewall review

Ditto this sentiment.  After reading this review, I was more than happy to switch from my old firewall, which had proven quite unstable.

Works okay for me.  Perhaps you were trying to terminate a process for which you do not have the proper rights to terminate?

Ah, yeah.  Sorry I haven't been back.  I'll try and hang around some more... well, I'll idle at least.

Yeah, that is a bit confusing.  I've learned to go ahead and make my rounds through each forum with new posts, so it's not that distracting to me anymore.

Probably not a bad idea.  You never know when something better will show up.

I was going to recommend SciTE.  It's made my life much easier.

Quickrun... that's a blast from the past for me.  I used that until windows' toolbar features were up to par, and then  I basically did exactly what nudone mentioned--using the little >> to make my menu.  I still use the same directory for my GeoShell MenuLaunch plugin that I used for my old windows bar.  In fact, the text on it says 'Apps>>' just as it always did.

Well, that was completely off-topic.   :)

Best FTP Server / Re: ASRT: What should we do for 4/23?
« on: April 21, 2005, 03:46 PM »
I'll be happy to help with this one, but I can't do it this week.  I'm more or less bedridden and more than a little drugged.  Maybe another week?  In the meantime, I'd also like to see opinions on Windows Explorer replacements (Xplorer2, Directory Opus, etc.)  I just recently talked myself into buying a license for Directory Opus after finding that I like it much more than Xplorer2.  I have you guys to thank for further draining my wallet.  :p

I can't help with this one.  GeoShell's bars are everything I can even imagine myself using, and then some.  Though, I imagine that this would be useful for someone who doesn't use GeoShell.

I used something called weather bug a while back.  I think that was its name.  Lots of spyware and blatant advertising in it, so I got rid of it.  I've been wary of them since then.  Besides, walking outside in flip flops and shorts when it's about 40 degrees is lots of fun.  Why spoil the surprise?

I like the guest reviewer idea.  That would go even farther to show that you're running a balanced website and that other folks' opinions are valued.

I would offer to do it (for free), and I might even have enough time for it toward the end of this week.  I use BPFTP on a daily basis, so I'd consider myself an expert there.  I'd have to go out and play with some more servers to get a good idea of how they stack up.  I know Gene6 and BPFTP are quite similar, and I've used Serv-U in the past, but there ought to be a bigger pool of candidates than those three.

I think that's how it goes with a lot of early successes in the software biz.  DOS, for example, is STILL in use on a lot of computers, but look at how evil Microsoft has become since those days.  Now that I think about it, one of the first computers I got came pre-loaded with some Norton utilities that rendered the machine almost inoperable until I closed them.  So, I guess I have used some of their software before.

How about FTP server software?  I recently bought a BPFTP Server license and the people over at DigitalCandle have been very accomodating.  I sent in a feature request that is being worked on and was asked to join a pool of beta testers.  Anyway, there are lots of FTP servers out there besides BPFTP--Serv-U, Gene6, etc.

The crack about Norton was quite accurate.  I've never really used any of their products, but I will occasionally visit their online virus info database, and always get a healthy dose of confusion until it all comes back to me.

It works fine for me.  I'm using beta 10 on Win2k SP4, if that helps.

I can see myself using the restoring stopped services/processes option, but I get enough email as it is, so I don't think I'd use the email notification gizmo.

Whoever made the page for priority master needs to be drawn and quartered.  I don't believe I've ever seen a more obnoxious website.  Funny thing is, the program actually looks entirely decent.

Mouser's Zone / Re: Ideas i want to bounce off you guys
« on: April 11, 2005, 02:44 AM »
It sounds like that could work.  If the only inconvenience will be having to come back to the site to get another key, I really don't think anyone would have a right to complain.  That's a lot more than most programmers offer.  However, I'm not sure if the idea of giving a member key to someone who can't pay is a good one.  At the very least, you shouldn't point out publically that you do that.

Another possibility is that you could make your work open source.  I personally wouldn't be much help, but you might be able to get others to help you correct bugs and add features to your programs.  That should decrease the amount of time you spend working on them.  And, obviously, these two wouldn't work well together.

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea.  CacheMan's tray icon is similar.  You can have a static icon, a numeric icon, or a graph.

If you're going to implement a more accurate calculation method than the one windows employs, it wouldn't bother me one bit.  It more or less does this already anyway, so it seems like it would just be a graphical change.  Still, I do already have a good method of displaying that information.  It probably would be best to make it optional.
