76  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / 010 Editor (hex editor) discounted today at bitsdujour.com on: July 22, 2011, 06:21:35 AM
Home/Academic license is $19.95. Commercial is $49.95

Normal prices are:
$49.95 US (Home/Academic Use) $129.95 US (Commercial Use)

Any users here who can comment on the capabilities of it?
Is there anything else that has a similar feature set?
Not much time for decent research before the deal runs out.

The terms of the license seem generous
010 Editor is currently licensed per user, not per machine. This means that if you purchase 010 Editor, you can install it on multiple machines as long as it is just you using the software. If other people are using the software too, a multi-user license must be purchased.

Except that Am I a commercial user or a home/academic user?
This is particularly irksome.
If I buy a license (in my personal capacity) to use at work, I will have to pay the commercial price.

77  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: What are good sunglasses (brands)? on: July 19, 2011, 09:04:34 PM
I used to swear by Zeiss sunglasses (glass, of course)
These days though, I'm too hard on my sunglasses, so it's really a case of whatever is good enough (for me).
i.e. 100% UVA A & B, polarized, NO distortion, comfortable (of course) and brown lenses

I just bought a pair of Costco (Kirkland) Polarized Sunglasses for about $30
Very light, very comfortable - no distortion etc as above
Someone commented here about them here cruisersforum

Another over here
Maui Jim H407 407-02 Hookipa Sport Sunglasses
Referring to these (which look exactly like what I bought at Costco)

Costco also has a few RayBans for about $75.
78  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 11.5 Released on: July 06, 2011, 05:41:19 AM
anyone know how to show the drop-down arrow in the addressbar - or if it's possible to get it back. I never use it myself, but have Opera installed on someone elses machine and they really miss it...
In opera:config , type   dropdown  in quick search and toggle  "Dropdown Button In Addressfield" on
Or try paste this into address bar and toggle it on:

I am having this weird thing in Opera at the moment where the "delete" from shopping cart in amazon doesnt work. Needless to say it is annoying  undecided

I find most of my Opera issues with Amazon go away when I set Opera to mask as Firefox for Amazon.com

I assume that the standard upgrade policy also applies to the Ashampoo offer, but you might want to double check.

-I don't think it does; the license box is stamped "Ashampoo Version".
But I have just now written the company and asked.

Curt, did you ever get a reply regarding the upgrade policy?
84  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application? on: March 12, 2011, 11:19:24 AM
One feature of WinZip that I really liked was the Checkout feature - small writeup here.
I don't recall seeing another (free) zip handling tool with that feature.

Still, I came across Nirsoft's ZipInstaller utility recently. Still need to see how practical it is.
85  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Trying to switch to Opera: Need help, tips on: March 02, 2011, 06:02:56 PM
I use these often ...

Ctrl+shift+c - copy text to note (search and launch anytime via Notes in side panel)

Ctrl+shift+L - fast media download via a Links page (or see Tools menu)
Use on a page with direct media links (mp3/mpg/jpg/pdf etc.).
Use search to filter displayed list of links (e.g use .pdf in search)
Select some or all links, right click for menu.
Use Save Linked Content As.. for individual specific downloads or use Save to Download folder for one pass multi-download.

Use the Show Images button to rapidly switch images on/off (or use cached images only).
Via the same button, change the display mode to user mode etc. I use this a lot to remove clutter from a web page.

Type opera: in address bar to access various opera internal stuff like config, history, cache etc.

PS: Make sure you know how to backup your wand, notes, bookmarks etc..
86  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Instantly Increasing Password Strength on: February 23, 2011, 07:54:56 PM
Of course, the downfall of generated passwords or passphrases is generally the requirement to store them somewhere.
I've long favored using a key plus a passphrase to generate the password.

I often use a tool called keymaker (keymaker20 was the last release) but I'm not sure of a reliable site to download it from.
However, a quick search turns up  passkool
Python based, so is somewhat more flexible than keymaker (Windows based)
Bares further investigation...

Aha, I see Barney referred to Keymaker here Registrations on Websites

Maximum PC gave the R.A.T a 98% rating

*Edit*: Maximum PC reviewed the R.A.T 7, so I updated the Cyborg link.

Considering how many mice I've had fail (both Logitech and Microsoft), one of these is definitely on a future short list.

Not to mention Rockbox runs on quite few Sansa models.
I just Rockbox'd an old Sansa E250.
Why Rockbox

The Sansa Clip+ and Fuze are great players

93  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Return of the Son of the best *free* Windows Text Editor on: November 10, 2010, 06:57:45 PM
I really like HippoEDIT - it helped me sort out some complicated multi-platform ifdef stuff. I was quite impressed.
However, I don't use it as my main editor (EditPad Pro) as I had continuous context switching delays when editing files on SMB shares.
Perhaps there are configuration settings that could mitigate that problem, but I didn't pursue it.

I was also an UltraEdit fan at one point, but post V12, it really just became too lethargic.
For quick & dirty editing, it's Notepad++ mainly - sometimes Notepad2 or SciTE.

The author of the tool now makes it available from here

Looks like Office 2000 support has been dropped though.
95  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: EditPad Pro 7-BETA on: October 13, 2010, 06:16:41 AM
widgewunner, thanks for the heads up.

Some of these issues have annoyed me as well, so it's good to see they will be fixed.
This one in particular
When opening/saving projects and files, there was only one "last used" folder that would come up as default...
and this issue always bugs the heck out of me. Why it was never there in the first place (or added to V6), I have no idea.
There was no way to quickly copy/paste a file's path/filename. Now you can right-click the files tab and get it into the clipboard

97  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Looking for Refrigerator Magnets that work on: September 28, 2010, 05:37:45 AM
CodeTRUCKER, I've used these Fridge Magnets
They're more expensive than those J-Mac linked to, but the magnets are stronger.

How about fastfontpreview
I can't vouch for it, but it does claim
VERY fast preview both uninstalled or installed fonts by folder from Hard drive,CD's or USB drive
Lanmisoft programs does not contain spyware, adware or viruses!
99  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: What's Your Internet Speed/Reliability SATISFACTION? on: September 06, 2010, 06:14:06 PM
Must admit, I really can't complain these days (up could be somewhat better)
32.7 Mb/s down : 3.62 Mb/s up

Reliability in my area is excellent as well - has been for a long time.
This is Cox Communications "Preferred"
Speeds up to 20 Mbps with PowerBoost®, great for music and photos.

100  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend disk imaging software? on: June 28, 2010, 06:34:20 PM
Which is why I will always prefer a boot CD as opposed to other backup/restoration mechanisms

Quote from: brahman
All disk imaging programs do some kind of tricky things to keep the disk & file system in a consistent state while backing up - so you can imagine that there is some contention among them.

Quote from: brahman
For me the K.O. criteria of O&O DiskImage 4 and 5 was that it cannot restore the system partition without a separate boot CD.
