126  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Microsoft Streets And Trips 2008 Activation crud on: September 14, 2008, 07:37:11 PM
For me it's the principle.
I have to trust that, if a machine gets hosed, MS will allow me to activate the software.
XP Pro falls in the same boat regarding my decision - the last OS I will buy from them.

This activation stuff is in the same category as DRM.
I've just started reading Cory Doctorow's "Content"

128  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Microsoft Streets And Trips 2008 Activation crud on: September 14, 2008, 07:23:28 PM
Having used releases of Streets And Trips back to 2003,  I had decided to skip 2007 and wait for 2008.
That was an unfortunate decision, as 2008 now includes activation crud.
Perhaps 2007 did as well, I don't know.

Seriously Microsoft, no more.
You will not see another $ for software from me - ever.

Mostly German language software.
However, there are a few English language items available, such as Steganos Safe V7, Auslogics Visual Styler, A2 Anti Malware. Perhaps still more to come in the next week.

A little more expensive than TimeSnapper, but probaby more in line with what Mouser is looking for.
Really great tracking and billing features etc..
See Timeless Time & Expense
This is not as cheap as Timekeeper, however it's pretty good software for $49.
As there is interest in this category, perhaps they can be contacted regarding a discount for DC members.

IphigeniePickup, how about a copy of PowerDvd 6 (OEM) for $5.99  (free shipping)

It probably excludes some of the enhanced audio modes, but this should be absolutely fine for a laptop.

I use Movie Edit Pro 11 http://site.magix.net/english-uk/home/.
It's pretty good value and is often available with a hefty rebate.

DVD-lab has always interested me though.

These days I use VUPlayer. It's light and ripping is painless.

I particularly like it's mechanism of specifying codecs

149  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: password-protect external HD (USB)? on: February 05, 2007, 08:18:25 PM
I've used TrueCrypt and it's predecessor e4m ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E4M and http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/e4m202a.html ) since the early days. It has not let me down once.
Personally, I prefer creating container files in the size of whatever my backup media is and then mounting them as needed. That has the added advantage of simpler backup e.g 650 MB per CD or 4.x GB per DVD etc...
Partitions used to be more difficult to manage, however now there is a plethora of partition managent software these days, so that's no longer an issue.
