Living Room / Re: Sansa Clip Zip: Wow!
« on: December 11, 2011, 09:28 PM »
I presume they would work with computer type speakers as well ? (they're only advertised for headfones).
or maybe not worth getting unless the speakers are good? - I havent a clue about this stuff...

Probably would not hurt for computer speaker use.
Except that as computer speakers generally have their own built in amps, you're not gaining much except for possibly a cleaner signal.
Even so, very few computer type speakers would be able to reveal much of that signal quality anyway (my 2 cents )

If you're interested in boosting Clip output levels, the Fiio amps are very reasonably priced (especially the E6) - find some reviews.
Their low end amps E3, E5 and E6 at Amazon

Very favorable reviews- I bought one recently
Have not yet got around to using it though

Living Room / Re: What the heck has happened to Google search?

Problem is, even the Google scrapers tend to be slow - although Scroogle is pretty good.

Any suggestions for good alternatives?
I've also used Ixquick on occasion with fairly positive results

Avanquest Connection Manager
Have never used it though.
(Was considered once when the Lenovo tool was causing problems)

Watch out for the similarity (in name mostly) to Real-Draw
That was the first association that came to mind.

Could not find an upgrade price either.
A quick search turns up the code upsoft2011
Knocks off 20% (well, USD anyway)

www.facebook.com/OOSoftware
Hi Morten, we decided to abandon the upgrade prices and lowered the price of O&O DiskImage 6 from USD 49.95 to 29.00. So the price of O&O DiskImage 6 is now actually lower than the price of the old upgrade version (which was USD 29.95).

Anyone actually tested this i.e. used it to restore an image?
There appears to be a new version out #6.
    -  I couldnt find an upgrade price,
    -  I couldnt find a list of what's (hopefully) improved
    + it's only €29 including 19% VAT

I wouldnt stick with this though unless I knew there were going to be improvements to the interface. Initially I thought it was better than Acronis, but no, it's not. They both only really cater for the scheduled job - a lot of us dont want to schedule jobs, that's when the GUI becomes a PIA...

What's new ?

diskimage V6
Image an entire computer with the push of a button
Create images of system and data drives
Clone drives and entire disks
NEW: File backup: Backup and restore individual files and/or folders
NEW: Live Update: Automatic Updates to current Program Versions
IMPROVED: Machine Independent Restoration (M.I.R.)
NEW: Monitoring and advanced warning of security risks
NEW: Start CD based on Windows 7 (compatible with XP and Vista)
NEW: Mount data from ISO files
Express view of main features
Advanced burning on CD/DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD
Works with Microsoft Virtual PC Disks (VHD)
NEW: Program interface is even more user-friendly

Anyone actually tested this i.e. used it to restore an image?

I've used this version (and 5.0)  a number times to restore system images - never failed once

Having had Acronis restores fail me more than once, I would not go back to it in a hurry

How about export from Works to format OpenOffice Base can read.
I think dBase (.dbf) will work.

From DOS days...

Borland's Sprint Wikipedia

Brown bag Software - PC Outline.

 for Vern Buerg's LIST though. Used that a LOT.
Mostly use less these days though (good Windows port here)

 for PC Tools (Central Point Software) as well
PC-Cache was just fantastic.

It appears the clock starts ticking on the license only after it's activated.
Might be worthwhile to buy more than 1 copy.
Of course, who knows what might happen (detection wise etc) in future releases.
Perhaps the 2012 version will still be useful in 2012/2013

Edit:
I did get a copy of the Agnitum Outpost competitive upgrade offer (used Norton), so perhaps I need not bother with a second.

Edit2 :
Btw, for anyone ordering it, on the last page you accept that they enable auto-renewal (i.e. they automatically bill you every year from now on). If you are not interested in this, make sure you log into the control panel thingy as described, and disable it .
Jibz, did not spot that - thanks for the tip.
PS: control panel is at Avangate.

88
Get your job to cash out for a pro license? It's not a lot of cash if it means productivity boost.
One could wait for a long time for that to happen (if ever) in a large company.
Besides, my usage is theoretical at this point but I can see a lot of potential.
I'm seriously tempted though ...

Home/Academic license is $19.95. Commercial is $49.95

Normal prices are:
$49.95 US (Home/Academic Use) $129.95 US (Commercial Use)

Any users here who can comment on the capabilities of it?
Is there anything else that has a similar feature set?
Not much time for decent research before the deal runs out.
Thanks

The terms of the license seem generous
010 Editor is currently licensed per user, not per machine. This means that if you purchase 010 Editor, you can install it on multiple machines as long as it is just you using the software. If other people are using the software too, a multi-user license must be purchased.

Except that Am I a commercial user or a home/academic user?
This is particularly irksome.
If I buy a license (in my personal capacity) to use at work, I will have to pay the commercial price.

Living Room / Re: What are good sunglasses (brands)?
« on: July 19, 2011, 09:04 PM »
I used to swear by Zeiss sunglasses (glass, of course)
These days though, I'm too hard on my sunglasses, so it's really a case of whatever is good enough (for me).
i.e. 100% UVA A & B, polarized, NO distortion, comfortable (of course) and brown lenses

I just bought a pair of Costco (Kirkland) Polarized Sunglasses for about $30
Very light, very comfortable - no distortion etc as above
Someone commented here about them here cruisersforum

Another over here
Maui Jim H407 407-02 Hookipa Sport Sunglasses
Referring to these (which look exactly like what I bought at Costco)

Costco also has a few RayBans for about $75.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 11.5 Released
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:41 AM »
anyone know how to show the drop-down arrow in the addressbar - or if it's possible to get it back. I never use it myself, but have Opera installed on someone elses machine and they really miss it...
In opera:config , type   dropdown  in quick search and toggle  "Dropdown Button In Addressfield" on
Or try paste this into address bar and toggle it on:
opera:config#UserPrefs|ShowDropdownButtonInAddressfield]ShowDropdownButtonInAddressfield

I am having this weird thing in Opera at the moment where the "delete" from shopping cart in amazon doesnt work. Needless to say it is annoying  :-\

I find most of my Opera issues with Amazon go away when I set Opera to mask as Firefox for Amazon.com

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:37 AM »
I assume that the standard upgrade policy also applies to the Ashampoo offer, but you might want to double check.

-I don't think it does; the license box is stamped "Ashampoo Version".
But I have just now written the company and asked.

Curt, did you ever get a reply regarding the upgrade policy?

One feature of WinZip that I really liked was the Checkout feature - small writeup here.
I don't recall seeing another (free) zip handling tool with that feature.

Still, I came across Nirsoft's ZipInstaller utility recently. Still need to see how practical it is.

I use these often ...

Ctrl+shift+c - copy text to note (search and launch anytime via Notes in side panel)

Ctrl+shift+L - fast media download via a Links page (or see Tools menu)
Use on a page with direct media links (mp3/mpg/jpg/pdf etc.).
Use search to filter displayed list of links (e.g use .pdf in search)
Select some or all links, right click for menu.
Use Save Linked Content As.. for individual specific downloads or use Save to Download folder for one pass multi-download.

Use the Show Images button to rapidly switch images on/off (or use cached images only).
Via the same button, change the display mode to user mode etc. I use this a lot to remove clutter from a web page.

Type opera: in address bar to access various opera internal stuff like config, history, cache etc.

PS: Make sure you know how to backup your wand, notes, bookmarks etc..

99
Of course, the downfall of generated passwords or passphrases is generally the requirement to store them somewhere.
I've long favored using a key plus a passphrase to generate the password.

I often use a tool called keymaker (keymaker20 was the last release) but I'm not sure of a reliable site to download it from.
However, a quick search turns up  passkool
Python based, so is somewhat more flexible than keymaker (Windows based)
Bares further investigation...

Aha, I see Barney referred to Keymaker here Registrations on Websites
