IE URL Lock
http://ieurllock.sourceforge.net/

Rambling...
While Opera has been my browser of choice since about version version 3, it's handling of certain sites has always been less than stellar - often because of poor (or deliberate) coding on the web site itself. Yahoo webmail is an example of this and Opera's masking feature does not always cut it either.

Over the years, I've messed around with various schemes/free tools to restrict sites that IE can access. However none, including IE's Content Advisor, worked to my satisfaction.

Tonight I came across IE URL Lock on Sourceforge, installed it and within 5 minutes my problems with Yahoo, Gmail and others was over. Well, so it appears anyway. We'll see over the next few days.

Any current users of  IE URL Lock, please comment.

This is from the same site as the Paragon apps listed for free in this thread by AdIyhc, so
Kudos to him.

I received my key for EssentialPim Pro today, though I did have to contact the company to get it.

Thomthowolf, you may need to do the same.

I've been using Ashampoo firewall for a few weeks on my test machine.
http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/php/product.php?session_langid=2&idstring=0050
It seems to be very lightweight and has really been trouble free. I've yet to do some leak tests though.
Seems like a reasonalble beginner's alternative to XP's firewall.
Prior to this, I was using the last released version of ZoneAlarm Pro  Version 5 - but it is a resource hog.

Btw, 5/5 stars for Perfect Disk!!

No success yet either with 'EssentialPIM Pro'.
I emailed the company last Friday as well.

Any of you other winners have any success?

Living Room / Re: The Great Firewall Hunt ... frustrating ...
« on: September 09, 2006, 02:45 PM »
Well, I think I'm going back to ZoneAlarm Pro (the very last V5 build).
I tried both the Ashampoo and Comodo firewalls (Comodo definitely being the fuller featured) and had no problem with any of them.
However, neither have one essential requirement from my point of view (nor does any other free firewall, afaik).
That requrement? Password based access to application/rule management (and shutdown etc..).

For those of you wondering ....
Register for the serial number if you're even vaguely interested.

The download (650mb) can, according to ContentParadise, be made later at any time.

Regards...

This thread is pretty old, but I thought I'd revive it with a new entry
Ashampoo FireWall - It's FREE for all

Has anyone tried it?
I will do so in a few days - just don't have the time right now.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« on: February 28, 2006, 06:33 PM »
I've been using CA ezAntivirus for more than a year. It's rock solid and low on resources.
If you follow the Computer Associates link from the Microsoft page, you can get a free full years trial from CA.
They also offer a 2 year license for $19-95,  which is pretty impressive.

Rover, deal with this stuff like this.
http://www.k9webprotection.com/

I've been using it for 1-2 months now and probably will indefinitely, as long as it's free.
All the other filtering options caused my connection to slow down. I have not noticed K9 affecting bandwidth at all.
Not sure what it's like on dial-up though.

Cam2PC - image viewer and more.
See http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/overview.php

Handsdown the best freeware image viewer I've found to date.

Available in both freeware version + shareware (more features) versions.
No spyware etc, etc, etc...

Another suggestion to try - DS Clock.
I'm currently using it on XP Pro sp1

They also sell a great calendar tool called Calendarscope which, obviously, is not free.

Official Announcements / Re: Change to Official License Key Policy
« on: December 22, 2005, 01:29 PM »
Personally I feel that we should keep things the way they are or, perhaps,  let the s/w run without a key for 6 months. After that a free, one year license key is needed. When that key expires, then a permanent key may be obtained.

I used to "hang out" a bunch on alt.comp.freeware, but eventually (about 18 months ago) got sick and tired of the whiney attitude there.

Mouser, you really have started a great thing with DC and I hope it continues to flourish.
Regards...

Courier is great. Very fast, exceptionally stable. I replaced Calypso with it as soon as it was released.
One of the best features - single file mailbox containers (as many as you want) and each can manage multiple accounts.
A steal (if it suits your needs) for $0
