I just went and read the details at their site, and yes, if you put your stuff in a public folder then you make it public, seems logical to me, the (offending?) paragraph is

Quote
Your Public Folder

While you own the content contained in Your Files, files placed in your public folders are automatically available to other Dropbox users and to the general public. By placing Your Files in your public folder, you hereby grant all other Dropbox users and the public a non-exclusive, non-commercial, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable, perpetual and irrevocable right and license to use and exploit Your Files in your public folder. In other words, a file in your public folder can be used by anyone, for any purpose except commercial use. If you do not want other people to be able to use Your Files in this manner, then simply do not place Your Files in your public folder. By placing Your Files in your public folder, you agree and acknowledge that Dropbox has no responsibility or obligation to monitor or notify of you of any non-compliance related to the license you have granted and that Dropbox has no responsibility to enforce or police, or aid you in enforcing or policing, the terms of that license.

I used poppeeper for years till I got it all going through gmail.  It was good, reliable and is the one I would use if I still needed one.  I went on a bit of a look the other day ad nothing seems to have turned up that is any better.

An interesting article at opendemocracy blog  http://www.opendemocracy....-and-the-future-of-gaming on the DRM issue and gaming particularly spore.

Spore - "the most hotly anticipatedcomputer game of the year" according to CNN - has quickly become the mostcontroversial game of the year and, quite likely, of the whole decade.

Using IE7Pro could be a problem as well, since you have to install that from an exe as far as I know anyway.

Good to see Target, a little accountability is a good thing. You have to stop the bad guys somehow but there is not a lot of point if in doing so you become the bad guys!
133  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Do you keep two computers synchronized? i.e. work + home. If so, how? on: September 17, 2008, 06:40:54 PM
I keep my 2 computers more or less in sync (data not programs, I try to keep the laptop as lean as possible).  The amounts of data involved are not huge, 30gb of music looked after separately, and about 5gb of other stuff.  Files i am working on regularly, essays and notes, are kept in dropbox and now evernote, the other stuff that doesnt change day to day (new documents downloaded from libraries or databases whatever) gets the SFFS treatment (as does new wallpapers and Icons and photos)  Works for me, but as I say I don't have a lot of data, though, it does grow week by week.
134  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: List of newbie questions regarding software on: September 17, 2008, 06:28:52 PM
I love all these neat tools. I just have to be careful to keep them in perspective.

This is so true 40hz and you can find comments about that sort of thing  on almost any of the productivity sites/blogs and no doubt on the writing sites.  When it all boils down, if you want to write or be productive or whatever it is, then the tool you use is probably the least important thing (though its also perhaps the most fun to try and find, and to put off what it is you are really trying to accomplish)

Photography is another good example, people have been making excellent images long before photoshop turned up, long before computers turned up, a good photographer will take a good photograph with any old camera, they will maybe make a better one with a fancy modern camera, but its their creativity and knowledge of what makes a photo good not the tools they use to do it.

I think thats it though nosh, it isn't going to help us in any particular way at present.  It will add to the sum of knowledge and at some point someone in a more applied research effort will find a use for it.  Though in the meantime people interested in the origins of the universe may discover further insights.  Who knows, me I'm going for lunch!

Its one of the great things of science, and all intellectual pursuits really, that some things are just done, investigated, tried whatever, just because someone is curious enough.  A bit of pure research can lead to all sorts of things which seems to be something which has been forgotten in this lets make a buck world.

Bring your own light sabre: Uni launches Jedi course

The force is strong: The university says Star Wars can shed light on political and social issues (Reuters: Issei Kato, file photo)

The UK's first Jedi course teaching personal development through a Star Wars syllabus will open to students at Queen's University in Belfast from November.

According to its publicity material, the course, Feel the Force: How to Train in the Jedi Way, teaches the real-life psychological techniques behind Jedi mind tricks.

It also claims to examine the wider issues behind the Star Wars universe, like balance, destiny, dualism, fatherhood and fascism.

The university says it hopes to attract young Star Wars fans and introduce them to education through open learning.

No prior qualifications are required and the blurb informs students that light sabres are not provided.

So there you go, all you aspiring Darth Vaders

While its been a while since i've played with it, I think you could probably make the CD or DVD with MS Movie Maker, the free one that comes with xp.  Just add the pictures in the desired order, add music or a voice over whatever then burn it to a DVD with some burning software, I dont know if movie maker would do that.  Just a thought anyway, and you cant go to far wrong, its all free, just a bit of time.
