1  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Where Is Windows 8.1? on: May 14, 2013, 04:10:07 AM
I wonder if Windows 8.1 is going to rely more on cloud based services compared to previous operating system. Atleast on the tablet side, noticed few reviewers commenting about their restriction of limiting people to use app store for even free application installation.
2  Other Software / Developer's Corner / Re: Some thoughts on the Project Wonderful Ad Network and web advertising in general on: May 14, 2013, 04:07:46 AM
I came across two ad networks that I think are much better than Adsense but they are CPM based (monthly banner sales type).

1) Passionfruit Ads
2) Carbon Ads ( you can see their ads on duckduckgo).

One question to mouser: As large percentage of the DC readers or surfers are likely to be ABP(ad block plus) users, have you noticed the difference in ad views vs traffic numbers? Or you see less number of ABP users?
3  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Ghost - a new "just blogging" platform now fully funded on Kickstarter on: May 03, 2013, 07:58:08 AM
Wordpress is good because the deployment on the server is easy and hosted platform is also free and easy to use. If the ghost can do that then well, it would be better. but if the ghost is built on something like rails or say node.js then I dont think there would be more takers.

Oh well, back to CPM ads cheesy

I think viglink or skimlinks are much better ads compared to Google ads. Atleast you get relevant ads compared to Google adsense. Also the viglink and skimlinks don't have the banner ads. See if that works here.

I remember using Vine feed reader but it is not active anymore. So I switched to G reader and now this is going too.

Purely your own personal opinion. And not a very well considered or provable one.
Since when opinion need to be provable? It's opinion for a reason, not a fact, we are talking about products with taste from consumers, not a meteor 12k light years away from earth that needs proof for it's existence. Besides that comment was for zen, for his comment -"Forget his desktop products, which I think are mostly silly.". If you think I should be giving proof for my opinion, I would love to have proof for products of canonical being silly.

Quote
Incorrect. If that is your interpretation of FOSS you're sadly mistaken. No matter which FOSS license (there are several BTW) you're misinterpreting here.
Not at all. Redhat and many other OSS software providers are using Open source for their own walled garden, many of the open source SAAS services are not available unless user purchase the subscription or license. FSF and GNU never took objection on that part of OSS but more on the SAAS nature of the OSS that restricts people form code. You can go to GNU for that article from stallman. There is a reason why stallman is against OSS. He doesn't oppose paywall, he opposes paywall that restricts the code distribution. If the canonical always distributed the code of their paywall and product behind paywall, on which point you are going to take objection? Community taste of not liking their products? that's just not rational at all.

Quote
Hard to say. You'll need to be much more specific as to what you're talking about him doing - as well as which license you're referring to - before this can be discussed with any degree of intelligence or rationality.
Canonical is not losing grounds on the GPL. They have a community that keeps eye on such things. I would be interested to see even stallman finding violation of GPL from canonical. All the ubuntu code is open, even unity, and few other commercial apps included.

Quote
Again, your own very personal opinion - and not a very well considered or provable one.
Same like my first answer.

1) Give me proof for Canonical violating GPL.
2) Give me proof for canonical products being silly. And also what qualifies for being silly and how one should not be silly, examples etc.
3) What needs to be proven in order to show you how the haters of canonical and unity, don't contribute positive to the growth of respective software other than the attacks on unity, ubuntu and canonical?

KDE spokesperson talking against ubuntu policies just because ubuntu's mobile product is in competition with their kde product, shows nothing but a piss poor attitude to drive away people from ubuntu. That's enough for me to say ubuntu or say canonical is pissing off hardcore community, that dont like design changes, money making model of any other FOSS company.
9  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: From Canonical's drink the kool-aid dept: Unity - sign on, or sign out on: March 08, 2013, 03:31:05 PM
No. Ubuntu products arent bad its the people who dont like changes. The nature of free and open source license offers him to do that another walled garden. Is he violating gpl? No. Is he pissing off community that hates making money and changes to traditional thinking? Yes.
10  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: From Canonical's drink the kool-aid dept: Unity - sign on, or sign out on: March 07, 2013, 03:23:20 PM
well it's canonical and not FSF and gnu. He pays the bill for the work done at that place. why he should have the same vision like FSF and GNU? I am with him on that. If you can tolerate MS, Apple and others for their corporate stuff, what's wrong if another walled garden comes into this? If you like it use it or leave it.

12  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: You Don’t Want Super-High-Speed Internet... on: March 01, 2013, 10:08:09 AM
You need better quota and even 1 mbps is fine for the usage. I don't think we need more than 2 mbps. With unlimited quota, you can go cloud with your data and work and with limited quota, you're basically being frugal with the possibilities with internet.

I agree turbo is 4 or 5 year old feature and so is speed dial, except that dial supports touch interface now lol.

They did tried to attract PHP developers with their support to WordPress and with Webmatrix program. I think they want web development business back but it seems not many new business are interested in azure and ASP.

I found many good programs from the small companies and developers better. Unfortunately it is the big brands that were not good with support and feature updates.
19  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Canonical now joins Microsoft and Apple in tracking users of its OS on: January 03, 2013, 04:22:52 PM
We are talking about linux modded by ubuntu, nothing is official for ubuntu. Their kernel is debians child. Their apps are written by other developers. Unity is fork of Gnome 3. Also Myunity is hosted on launchpad (canonical property) for program, bugs hosting and bazaar, also supported under official LTS repo. Besides that they also offered option of turning off the feature, which you can't compare with MS and apple. I don't understand how we are treating canonical on equal footing like MS. If we can treat canonical as spyware then adding adsense ads on any blog also makes that site spyware host, no? Google collects personal data while serving ads, just like amazon.
20  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Parallella, the $99 supercomputer on: January 03, 2013, 03:54:43 PM
No, I mean if you consider the product for recurring earning, that part of scaling is very low. It's not like apple boxes, where there is profit to be made from every official hardware parts. Not that I want restriction like that but just saying that It becomes harder once you multi-continent with sales.

I am thinking about porting some of skwire's coding snacks to linux. Maybe before next years NANY. I don't know how many I can do but that is definitely in my list.

They could have made it opt-in.

They did, there is an option in System settings for turning off amazon lens. Also you can completely remove via myunity or the terminal.

If you're asking for that opt-in during installation, I give you that they didn't provided but there is setting in the system settings pane for that.
23  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Canonical now joins Microsoft and Apple in tracking users of its OS on: January 03, 2013, 03:16:03 PM
I do agree that tracking search queries and user behavior is bad. But how many linux users stop using Google for the same reason? Using linux with some ethics and then pointing browsers to Google that does the same like amazon, makes no difference. I don't think they do see this point, so on what stance they say that canonical is not allowed to use amazon search? (We know amazon tracks data just like google and canonical is helping them do that for profit).

The same doesn't apply for their usage of Google because they like it or got used to it etc. I would hold arguments from linux community with much respect if they call "spade a spade" and put every similar card in same line. Especially RMS and EFF when they are making claims out of thin air.

I think RMS and EFF painted canonical in much darker shade using Media. That said, people moving to ubuntu out of consumer frustration and paranoia are smart already to avoid such affiliate links and stuff. Calling it Spyware (fsf reference) and user tracking corporation (Eff reference) is exaggeration, IMO.

You need to open a terminal and issue a command (sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping) which virtually guarantees 90% of the people using Ubuntu under Unity will never do so.

TBH, people using unity and ubuntu are smart enough to use this hack and this hack is used in myunity and official option of turning off amazon search. So I don't think people will ignore that.

99 bucks computers are not much scalable for manufacturer.
