Warning, this is a thread hijack but I just could not resist  cheesy

@musetips

What's the deal with the incremental updates of your Text Filter application? The only things that changed every 3-4 days since November last year are the version number and date. Also, you seem to hide the portable version...  hope it has got nothing to do with the crap that is included in the installer.

A little update- I was installing Applian FLV player on my new computer.  It uses Open Candy.  Or at least I *think* it does.  Looking in the EULA, it has something about OpenCandy.  But I wasn't presented with any option other than installing their own premium version... so I'm not sure *what* that was about...

Do you have the Freecorder toolbar?

I don't even know what that is.  I don't have any toolbars in my browsers, though.  And nothing was installed other than the FLV player.
Applian Flv Player is bundled with FreeCorder Toolbar. No OC recommendations, just the EULA though.

185  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy? on: April 03, 2011, 08:53:25 PM
Nitpicking? No, absolutely not. The obsession with spyware terminology, however, is a deviation from the real issue here. Fact is that OC is an Ad serving platform that also tracks your usage of software, monitors your actions and report this information back home. Arguing that others (Google, Adobe, Java, ....) do similar stuff does not (and should not) approve OC. Targeting the 'happy click next' ignorant crowd is not okay. What it actually does is setting a precedence for the rest of us who do think before clicking yes, read the EULA, etc. Next thing you hear, but everyone is using google, everyone is on FB... every installer is powered by OC (well, they wish).... got it?

The comment about Sweet IM illustrates another issue I have with OC, developers have no control about what OC promotes and they do not care about the end user and would recommend anything that pays well. User satisfaction my arxx ... Angry

@Renegade

No, I did not try Sweet IM (and have no intention/need to do that). I was just wondering how you can recommend Sweet IM to others without having tried it yourself first?

Do you have Sweet IM installed on your machine?
189  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy? on: April 02, 2011, 06:38:04 AM
So what you're saying is we need a new term to define things like OC?

Here are a few... Ad Conduit, Usage Information Sniffer/Transferer, Privacy Intrusion Mechanism. That's what OC does. How it does what it does is not an issue (at least for me it's not).

Just go through the advertisers list... Crawler Toolbar, My Shopping Genie, PriceGong, SweetIM.....sigh

Thanks mouser.

The LicenseFile.txt specifically talks about 'trial period' and the Personal Printer Suite's "About" window shows number of days left before renewal. Hence the confusion.

So why most developers that partner with OC hid that fact?

Do you get paid the same for recommending any of these softwares or does it depend on the advertiser's bid?

Is there a list of participating 'Advertisers' somewhere? I could not find one at http://www.opencandy.com/.

198  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: [Freeware] Text Filter - portable, search-as-you-type text file viewer on: March 29, 2011, 01:25:53 AM
There were no updates to the program since November last year. The only things that change every couple of days are the version number and date. The installer had this crap for a long time thumb down

(you can still get the portable version from http://www.musetips.com/d...s/TextFilter_Portable.zip)
199  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Pre-launch of Super Simple on: March 25, 2011, 11:52:27 PM
BTW - How did you extract the setup file? I tried quickly with Universal Extractor, but it threw an error. I gave up at that point.

You need to keep Universal Extractor elements up-to-date. In this case, download the latest Inno Setup Unpacker from  http://sourceforge.net/pr...ts/innounp/files/innounp/ to replace (update) the one in the Universal Extractor 'bin' folder.

There are a few others, like UPX, TrID, 7-Zip, etc. that need to be updated.
200  Other Software / Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Pre-launch of Super Simple on: March 25, 2011, 11:11:44 PM
looks "Super Simple" alright! thumbs up will there be a super simple non-installer version be available for download?

Unfortunately no.

First reason, the deployment looks like this:

Quote
AssemblyLoader4x86.dll
Camera.ico
client.wyc
msvcp100.dll
msvcr100.dll
Photo Resizer.chm
PhotoResizer.exe
unins000.dat
unins000.exe
Uninstall.ico
wyUpdate.exe

Now, you could download the installer then extract it with something like Universal Extractor (checked - doesn't work -- the installer is signed so UE can't extract it), and you'd have that, and it would run, but you wouldn't get the registry entries for the Windows Explorer integration or any of the shortcuts. I'll be explaining what the deployment files are in future blog posts.

Second reason, having a second deployment would require too much explanation and complicate things too much. The entire idea is to simplify things as much as possible for the target audience so as not to confuse them. Multiple deployment options (other than EXE vs. ZIP) requires having additional explanations which clutter up the page, which is something I'm trying to avoid.

I sucessfully managed to uniextract the installer. I have got the same set of files in Photo-Resizer-Setup\{app} folder as in your deployment list above. Beautiful icon, btw.

Maybe you want to tell your users that it requires .net 4.0 to run and that the installer will DL and install it on their system if not present.
