1403  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a program like add/remove programs any idea's? on: September 05, 2007, 01:59:39 AM
Guys, there is plenty of posts about uninstaller tools on DC, this thread is about programs missing from/not listed in the add/remove window.
1404  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Tiny apps on: September 04, 2007, 09:32:33 PM
Cybernetnews lists Top 15 Ultra Tiny Apps (and a few more cool and handy tools mentioned in the comments).

Here's a link to another good list of Power replacements for built-in Windows utilities by Lifehacker.
1405  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a program like add/remove programs any idea's? on: September 04, 2007, 08:29:03 PM
now the add/remove programs list is missing most of the programs that were previously installed on the machine although 99% of them still run fine

Is there a scrollbar in the add/remove window? Sometimes a large white space will appear between programs so you'll not see the entries unless you scroll all the way down.
1406  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a program like add/remove programs any idea's? on: September 04, 2007, 08:15:50 PM
Check Microsoft's KB Article: Add/Remove Programs tool displays installed programs incorrectly for a possible fix.
1407  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Switcher2: Expose Clone (Window Arranger) for Windows on: September 03, 2007, 06:57:11 PM
I find all the implementations of exposé on win XP rather clunky or too resource  hungry. So I’ve settled on TaskSwitchXP.

Alt -Tab Thingy was my task switching program of choice.

Perhaps this would help?

http://www.ntwind.com/sof...ilities/visual-subst.html

creates a virtual drive pointing to a folder - then you just need to choose the drive from the drop down drive list...

You do not need a third party tool to do that. You could create virtual drives via SUBST.EXE tool (in %WINDIR%\system32).
1409  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Switcher2: Expose Clone (Window Arranger) for Windows on: September 03, 2007, 01:40:37 AM
Ultimately, these third party apps get consigned to a lingering death on my computer - installed but neglected for months before finally being ripped out!

Sounds familiar  cheesy
1410  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: download all updates for XP in one go? on: September 02, 2007, 06:20:32 PM
I have got it and it is full of hotfix uninstallers (even though I regularly use CrapCleaner).

$hf_mig$ does not contain uninstallers. All the $NtUninstallKBxxxxxxx folders are uninstallers for Windows updates and can be safely deleteted if you are not gonna need to uninstall them one day.

Doug Knox has a xp hotfix backup removal utility.
1411  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: $7.5 to optimize XP NTFS Drive access : rip-off or not ? on: September 02, 2007, 11:25:51 AM
Have you seen this msfn thread yet?
1412  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: download all updates for XP in one go? on: September 02, 2007, 11:17:03 AM
It contains security updates, and thus it seems it should NOT be removed (I wonder if CCleaner touches these ones). More information

The $hf_mig$ folder should not be deleted. It is used for for future upgrades to reference. See discussion at http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=4288

@Curt

If you like Dirhael's dock icons, download Reflections CAPS by ~styrizo to create your own (Preview Here). Alternatively, check out Reflections Vol. I , Reflections Vol. II , and Reflections Vol. III.
1414  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for a Freeware Timer software on: September 02, 2007, 06:20:59 AM
PKTimer (Direct Download) is a small, skinable, alarm clock that can work as a countdown or configured to go off at a fixed time. It has 4 types of alarms:

1 Play beep.wav
2 Load a program
3 Play a CD from the cdrom tray
4 Shutdown windows

See pic of the basic skin. You can find more skins here and here

Is Zlyl Zhang one of your, ahem, friend?

Oh, yeah, I'm a great friend of her. I took that photo one night she came to visit me Grin

Can I be your friend too then?

StudioZai Menu Organizer is another alternative. I haven't tried it and am not sure how it works under Vista.

1421  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Mouse software on: August 28, 2007, 08:04:13 AM
I use NiftyWindows, which allows you to control windows in all kinds of ways by using only your mouse. However, it does not have a nifty method of scrolling windows that aren't in focus.

If you like this program then you should check out radialm.

Recommending xBar utility by methodik should earn me the credits cheesy. With xBar you can create a margin on your screen that maximized windows will not cover... and there are other great little programs listed on that page. You will find info on methodik's programs at Virtualplastic.

1425  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: screen saver file association messed up on: August 27, 2007, 08:54:41 PM
The "%1" /S value determines how Windows runs screensavers (.SCR files). If it "needs" to be opened with some other program, the value would look like this "%1" /S %*. The removal of adware/malware effected the change (which is good).

Here's a good read on this topic
