BTW guys visiting AVASt! forum in the last 24-48 hours should be careful, apprently the forum was hacked and it was trying to infect people via a iframe and security exploit...

Do a full scan just in case.

Thanks Lusher. BTW, only ie (+ie clone) browsers were affected.

Living Room / Re: Problem Windows Genuine Advantage
« on: August 25, 2007, 08:35 PM »
This is possibly a more recent update from the source linked above.

Update: Word from Microsoft is that this problem has been fixed, and all users affected should revisit the WGA site and re-validate. There's no explanation as to why Microsoft was originally telling people to wait until Tuesday, but the good news is that the problem has been solved.

Thanks for the heads up Cpilot.

Correct. Read Microsoft Technical Support Furum.

And remember, who needs sleep anyway?
-cranioscopical (August 25, 2007, 07:58 AM)

Babies... But only when we're not sleeping: they have a natural reaction to parental sleep which is to either become wide awake and/or be discomforted by something or other ;)
-Perry Mowbray (August 25, 2007, 08:26 AM)

The secret is to sleep when the baby isn't looking.  :-\

Sounds like an experienced mom.

Congratulations lanux!

Could someone explain the difference between HD cloning and imaging software and what's considered better for backing up the HD. Thanks

General Software Discussion / Re: Kantaris Media Player
« on: August 24, 2007, 11:17 AM »
OK guys I have installed kantaris and ... uninstalled it. Yeah, beautiful interface, awesome visualizations and all that but with 38MB memory usage and 12-18% CPU usage it's heavy on resources compared with VLC usage of 12MB and 1% respectively (I only played a mp3). More important though, kantaris setup calls home and to another remote address (did not check the ip yet) and the same happens upon launching the program. There is no option to disable this behaviour. The program also connects to Audioscrobbler - "a database that tracks listening habits". Again no option to disallow that.

No I have not. I was hoping one of you guys have... I guess I should install it on a backup machine and see how it performs. Thanks.

Any similar programs dor processes? Which will block/allow processes to be executed?

Check out Castlecops Wiki resources mentioned in this thread.

@Lusher
Thanks for that. Blink Personal Edition is listed as freeware but it's not.

Yes, there are quite a few programs that do that. I use RegDefend (freeware version). I have also used DiamondCS Registry Prot (freeware) and Spybot Search and Destroy Teatimer (freeware) before. Here is a link to an excellent thread on this topic.

True X-Mouse Gizmo for Windows and KatMouse.

Ooops, TXMouse was mentioned in your post. Anyway, I'll leave the link.

Thanks Lashiec. The Parasite Fight is another great resource page.

Not sure what you mean by "reload files automatically when they are updated" but have a look at PDF-XChange Viewer (Free). It's a light weight alternative to Adobe's Reader with some great extra features including Annotations, Comments and "Typewriter" tools.

H-Menu might do what you want. I haven't tried it myself yet but it looks highly configurable. I downloaded H-Menu 6.0 from A+ Freeware.

Here's a description from Virtualplastic: "H-Menu is a fully configurable launcher, yet it remains invisible until activated with the mouse. (...) Animated Toolbars appear on contact with the screen’s edge, up to two per side. H-Menu also supports the use of Cascading Menus and Multimedia capabilities. (...) The number of Buttons per Bar and their size can be configured and you can use your own bitmaps as backgrounds. Also you can create many sets of Buttonbars under different user names and groups, then navigate between them with links on each of the Buttonbar groups." Loads of options :)"

PKApps - Scroll all the way down to "Other thingies" section and download the .zip file. Unzip and look for PKMenu and PKLauncher (inside "2006-september-7_PKAppsFunpack.zip"). Both could do what you are after and are highly customizable.

Ooops, I forgot to mention QuickMenu (Discussed here). Click to download an English version.
