You missed the entire point. I can't do the rollback because the iso has to be downloaded on the same machine that you are going to roll back and that machine can't connect to the Internet!!!

I have an Asus U47A laptop which I upgraded to Windows 10 without errors. After the upgrade I had no Ethernet/WiFi connection and messages suggested possible driver problems. I downloaded drivers from Asus website indicated for Windows 10 and subsequently generics  from Microsoft and Intel. Nothing worked. I tried to set up an external USB router link: same error message. I went through all the discussions I could find on the web for similar problems, finding no fixes. Called Asus tech support. The said the U47A was incompatible with Windows 10 and it wasn't their problem. Tried to download a Windows 10 is one but apparently Microsoft uses the code from the machine you are going to apply the iso to and you can't use one download on a different machine. They're assuming the machine with the bad install has an  Internet connection. Searched the Microsoft database but could find no similar cases.   Catch-22!

My printer is an HP PSC 1510 USB connected to an ASUS tower running Windows 7 Home Premium.  The other 7 PCs are scattered all over my house on two floors.  Three are laptops and the rest are towers, so I can't really set up a hardwired network. As I said, money is very scarce, but I could replace the printer as long as it was an inexpensive one.  I've never set up a network before, but I already know Windows Homegroup is bad news. I've got one tower running W7 Ultimate hardwired to a Verizon FIOS M1424WR (?) router: the rest are WIFI. The printer and the router are on different floors.

I have 7 PCs running various versions of windows 7 and one running windows 8. They are all networked WI-FI in various locations in my home. I have an HP printer hardwired to one of the W7s.  I'd like all of the PCs to be able to print to the one printer. Cost is a major factor, so I need a cheap solution The only two ways I've been able to ID to do this is either through a Microsoft Homegroup network or Google Cloud Print.  My printer is not one that's on the Google list of compatible printers, and assuming I went out and bought one, I have no assurance that I could get that approach to work.   I tried setting up a Homegroup and got as far as getting the PC the printer is on to recognize two of the other PCs.  Even so, I can't any of the PCs to talk to each other.  I spent several days wandering around on various forums, and none of the posts I found there were helpful.   Mostly they appeared to be single responses thrown out by people making dumb wild guesses for the sake of scoring ego points.  I need someone (or one +) knowledgeable enough to stick with me until I work through the problem.  If I go the Google approach, I'm willing to buy one of the cheaper compatible printers, but I'd rather not since I'm on a fixed income with a negative cash flow.   The Homegroup road looks to be very, very messy from what I saw on the forums, and Microsoft has nothing useful that I could find in their Knowledgebase.  They seem to pretty much steer clear of the whole Homegroup subject.  

So would someone open a discussion with me....please!                   Dan

Considering the potential usefulness, a cross-platform app would probably be very appropriate. BTW are you planning to make the target site a fixed element or a variable the user can insert (which would be potentially very useful, since the information needed for retrieval may be on different sites.

When you give it some thought, Obama is unlikely to shut down the Internet. Hundreds of thousands of businesses are dependent on the Internet and couldn't function without it. Not only that, but the government-local to national-also depends on the Internet and couldn't function without it.  What's more likely is that the government is likely to set up a monitoring (read spying) and suppression system similar to what China has today (or just borrow theirs) which would make it unsafe for us to read websites that were red flagged, or make what might be considered subversive comments in emails.  The special powers granted to Homeland Security already sets up the ability to override the Constitution in the "interest of national security" (read, whenever they feel like it).  And unless someone leaks it (and providing something like Wikileaks is still around) and it gets on the net, we won't have a clue to what they are doing. Twenty years ago, what I just said would have been dismissed by most people as paranoia.  Today it would just get a 'ho-hum' because we have gone so far into complacency.  Complacency is the father of dictatorship.  Every day I walk through Port Authority in New York and see Military and Police lined up on both sides by the dozens. It scares me to think that they aren't there to protect me (like most people foolishly think).

The Gov't trying to shut down Wikileaks wasn't funny.  Is this the ultimate answer?  In recent years, the government has shown that it is increasingly unresponsive to the people.  Using legitimate means is failing in almost every area.  Who was it that said, "The last resort of free enterprise is crime!"?   These ideas may need to be discussed and moved on before it winds up being to late to try (see link below).

I loaded W7 onto 2 machines (64 &32).  Haven't used either much yet, but I figure problems with security, obsolete apps, etc. will sort themselves out eventually.  Have to go with the flow if you want to stay with Microsoft OSs.  I still have XP Pro on my workhorse machine and Vista Home on one laptop (other two are XP Pro).  Make a gradual transition as I have the time to familiarize myself with 7.  I have a quad core box that I want to install W7, Ubuntu, and Snow Leopard on, but I can't get a copy of VMWare or a reliable boot loader, so that's on hold for now.  Anyone have any ideas that would help me get that project going would be greatly  appreciated.

Thanks for offering to help, but already you are talking over my head.  Remember, I have never used Grub before or seen a manual for it, so when explaining things to me, you need to start at square one.  If you can tell me which version I should use and where to download it from that will be a start.  I hit a couple of sites where people were arguing over which version was better and I had no way of telling which one was correct.  If you can point me to a site with a good working version, hopefully they will also have a current manual I can download and read which will help me understand what you are talking about when you try to explain things to me.  Thanks loads.

Looks like there are no Grub heavies around.  If I go that route, I still don't even know which version of the app to use, not to mention a whole lot of questions after that.  If anyone knows someone who knows someone, I wish they would steer me in the direction of somebody I can get into a dialogue with over this.

I already did my googling, so please no more link and run responses.  And I don't really need 50 alternatives to Grub-the couple above that I already have will do.  Thanks to those who have already posted.  I appreciate your efforts to help.

I just finished assembling a quad core machine.  I want to set it up with multiple OSs-64 bit versions of Vista and Ubuntu to start and probably W7 and perhaps OS X later.  I remember from years back that boot loaders can be a "virtual" nightmare. Since I haven't kept up, I did a lot of Googling for starters and it looks like Gnu Grub is the current king of the hill.  But it would appear that there is little agreement on which version to use or how exactly to use whichever one you decide on.  My sense of this is that it could wind up like one of those butterfly effect disaster movies where the slightest misstep takes you straight to Armageddon.  I'm looking for someone with solid experience in this area who can provide me with enough detailed guidance that I don't screw this thing up.

Its looks like my original idea is too complicated to implement and would be useful to very few people even if it can be done.  To make it easier and possibly more usefel, the utility could be generalized to a degree.  If you assume that you only search/downward from the level you are in, then you could limit yourself to two levels. That would give you, Level 1 = Artist; Level 2 = Album/Set.  You would lose the detail where an album contained several CDs or was a boxed set and you would lose the count of total CDs (You could only count total albums/sets), but you would still end up with a total album/set count (with, hopefully, subtotals by artist), and, if a list can be generated, it would give a beautiful index of the entire collection. You would only need a list at one level since the album folder names contain the name of the artist and the album for each folder.  Doing it that way turns it into a much simpler task and would give you a general utility which could be applied to any system where a 2 level index would be useful-music or otherwise.

I was looking back over the posts and I guess I should point out that you can't base counts or lists on track names.  Although all the music is in mp3 format, the file names are unreliable.  Some are int the format artist - album - # track, but many contain only track, # track, or some other combination and the separators also include _, spaces, parentheses, brackets, etc.-a real hodge-podge!  And the internal track info is completely unreliable, as well.  The folder names are consistent, because I created them: with a few rare exceptions the folder names consist of artist - album name.

The above description is correct as far as it goes.  The only problem is that below the album level, you may have folders which contain artwork rather than CDs. So unless you can determine this from the folder names (eliminate folders called 'artwork' or 'cartulas', etc.) or test the folder to see if it actually contains mp3s.  I would like two counts: 1) a count of the albums, and 2) a count of the CDs.   I would also like an index list of the album names.   I suppose I could go in and dump all the artwork back into the album folders and delete the separate artwork folders, but this would be a lot of work, since the drive may contain as many as around 6000 CDs.

I just installed Windows Player 11.  Everytime it runs it tries to start Activesync.  Apparently there is no option for turning this off.  Anyone know of a fix/workaround?

General Software Discussion / CD Ripping

Up to now I've occasionally ripped a CD or two with Windows Media Player.  Anyone who's done this knows it's exceedingly slow.  My girlfriend has a lot of CDs and I just bought her a new 30GB iPod.  If she wants to rip her CD collection to put it on the iPOD, it will probably take well into the next century to fill it using Media Player.  I'm hoping there is some really fast software out there that might make the job easier.  Anyone have any suggestions?
