So hereby please consider v0.8.3 the official entry for NANY 2011.

Thanks!  Thmbsup

Fully polished programmes are always going to be an issue... I think it's wonderful that you've got to this point!

Next year we must get a countdown ticker...  Wink
253  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Dreamy Monitor... on: December 31, 2010, 05:50:08 AM
I gave up on wanting brightness levels to be triggered by an event as I realised that the "working" monitor would simply be the one I'm staring at, i.e. the computer has no idea what my eyeballs are doing.

It'd be neat if you could use a webcam to do that  tongue

hahaha~! That was my first thought as well! Eye tracking... don't know how to do it, but it would be very cool!

My logitech webcam zooms to keep me in frame...

You'd have to calibrate it, eh?...
  • Step One: Look at Monitor One
  • Step Two: Look at (the centre of) Monitor Two
  • Step etc: Look at...

Well, I've found out how to adjust the brightness for ALL monitors... But that doesn't help too much... I'll keep looking into it, but it's going to be a tad hairy as I'm not really sure where I'm going on this one...

This one supports multiple monitors: http://quickgamma.de/indexen.html
256  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Dreamy Monitor... on: December 31, 2010, 04:30:46 AM
It sounds to me like enumerating the monitors is step 1. Next, keep the monitor with the mouse bright and dull the rest. Next (or in between), give the user a very small graphical UI that lets them "toggle" monitors brighter or darker permanently. It would be ideal in the taskbar notification area.

That would work... I also think having windows "remembered" by class / title / text options would be handy. I tend to not keep the same windows on the same monitors and adjust my working environment (which monitor is the read and which is the work).

... I must invest in a better chair....
257  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Dreamy Monitor... on: December 31, 2010, 04:10:39 AM
Perry, it was something i did consider posting a coding snack request about. i decided not to because of the drawback you mentioned, i.e. what defines the "working" monitor.

A hotkey for sticky window highlight?  tongue

No you didn't miss them...

Would you mind attaching them to your OP? That means others can use as well  Thmbsup

Like 40hz, once in the zone, I'm almost uncontactable...

When I'm concentrating, I'm almost completely oblivious to whatever is going on around me. So as long as I can work someplace where I won't get stepped on, or run over, I'm fine.

I have had workmates tap me on the shoulder asking "Have you heard anything in our conversation the last 5 minutes?"

Though, horribly and to my disgrace, I get somewhat grumpy when those who know how to, get into my head with unrelated questions to the one I'm working on...

I do like music playing, but like many others, the tougher the problem the quieter the music (and correspondingly... the more successful the louder the music  tongue )
261  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Dreamy Monitor... on: December 31, 2010, 01:48:50 AM
1) lots of monitors equates to lots of light in your face. obvious really. but i never thought about it until my eyes starting aching. so, main monitor is now "normal" brightness and the other three are set to be quite dark. if your room is well illuminated then i doubt the monitor brightness will be an issue; i'm sat in a dark room, so having four "normal" bright monitors is similar to staring into a light bulb all day, i.e. not very clever.

There must be a way to script something like that... monitor with active window is brighter?

although that wouldn't work when you work on one and read on another...

And ergonomically... aren't you meant to have your eyes level with the centre of your monitor?

So this is the Release? Should I change the title?

I just changed the title to "Withdrawn"  Wink

269  Special User Sections / N.A.N.Y. 2011 / NANY 2011: ContactFX -- Unfinished / Withdrawn / ? on: December 30, 2010, 07:57:24 PM
 embarassed  What is it with NANY and AddressBooks? ContactFX will not get past 2.0 for NANY 2011... which raises the question: Should it be Withdrawn or Unfinished or just plain left as a Pledge? I'll keep working on it ('cos I love it  Wink )...

Apologies to all those expecting something tonight... I did get some more time not long ago and hoping that I could get a reduced version done, but it was too much rush and too many other competing pressures...  was hopefully something more not too far in the future.

I like comments like this - at some point I hope that NANY apps will appear that are results of a lot more collaboration where maybe miva2 and some others will get together and create a masterpiece  Thmbsup

Yes, that's been one of my dreams for NANY for a couple of years now...
273  Special User Sections / N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 :: Entry Ideas & Requests on: December 21, 2010, 04:08:20 PM
I've been kludging something together for this, and since I've spent a little time on it I figured I'd pledge.

Damn me! I was about to pledge for this too!
Is it against the rules if I pledge my version too? Because I was working on it for the last 2-3 days and it's very close to be finished.

I don't see why not? It's bound to be implemented differently... and gives us more choice (where would we be if there were only one text editor?)...

Incidentally, I guess Pledging early is a good way of indicating your intentions  Wink
274  Special User Sections / N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 :: Official Update Thread on: December 21, 2010, 05:08:52 AM
As we rush toward the New Year, the temperature in the NANY Event continues to increase along with the numbers!

It's been wonderful to see the Pledges increasing over the course of the Event: 34 Pledges to date! We also had 22 Teasers posted so that our users could play and give feedback... and over the last couple of months the Pledges have steadily been converted to 12 Releases!

But there's still more time... so keep your eyes peeled for more additions!

[attachimg=1]

Thanks to timns and his wonderful creativity we also have a great summary of our experiences of NANY as we move toward the New Year via Christmas...

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through my browser,
not a creature was stirring - except of course, mouser;

Questions were typed in the forums with care,
in the hope that some answers soon would be there;

Donation Coders were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of software danced in their heads;

cranioscopical had just logged back on,
and was all settled down for a long Winter's pun;

When out in the forum there arose such a thread!
We all logged back on to see what was said;

Away to my firefox I ran in a dash,
tore open my tabs and updated my flash;

And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but some amazing new apps, in time for New Year;

A fun competition to show your ability:
create a new app, game or utility;

Code it, upload it and throw it into the mix,
and then let everyone find the bugs to be fixed

No offense meant, in fact let me be clear:
I am of course referring to my own entry here Wink

But even right now, as the deadline is nearing:
34 apps and they are still appearing!

This is why DC is my number one:
community, spirit, software and fun;

And so I exclaim, to all who can hear:
this NANY is great, and just wait till NEXT year!
