FastPictureViewer - seriously, it is soooo fast, double-click on an image and bam it's there, left+right clicks do different zooms etc.....

I also use XNView for when I want to see thumbnails of all the photos in a folder, and the XNview Shell Extension so that I see a nice preview whenever I right-click on an image in ANY open/save dialog window :)

Living Room / Re: Why I Avoid Apple Products
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:30 PM »
I'm split 50/50 on this. In one way I don't like the lack of flash support and all the other lockdowns but on the other hand their products "just work" and are so easy to use.

I remember getting my AppleTV couple years ago - I still rate it now as the easiest device to setup EVER! I took it out the box gave it some power, hooked up video cables and it just worked, not even a quick glance of a setup guide required.

I've had PocketPC phones, Symbian phones, but the iPhone just makes me want to use my phone more, the interface is just gorgeous, the appstore is amazing - I've bought loads of apps, most for the price of a pint of beer and they are superb.

My wife has a shuffle, 6yr old has an original Nano, 10yr old got her an iPod Touch, I have my iPhone and also a Nano for use in gym. Even have a Mac Mini in the bedroom with SlingPlayer for watching all our channels upstairs and surfing.

Hhhmm, okay, maybe I'm 80/20 in favour of Apple then ;)

I'm interested in what Anti-Virus and Firewall products are known to work on it before installing :)

Congratulations and all the best for 2009!

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3.1 [BETA 2]
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:16 PM »
I'm using the nightly branch builds of 3.1 pre-beta3 and all my extensions such as NoScript, Adblock, TabMixPlus etc are all working fine. Most extensions, especially the really popular ones like those I just listed already have new versions released that work for Firefox 3.1 :)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager

Cannot fault the regular updates this product gets from the author, glad I purchased a lifetime license. Can't wait until dual-pane in introduced then I can start using it - still on Total Commander, cannot live without dual-pane but will most certainly switch to XYplorer once it is implemented.

Thanks Carol, I've got an iPhone 3G so I'll probably grab one of the apps from the app store that hooks right into WordPress for posting as well :)

Thanks everyone, going to give WordPress my first going over, sounds like I can keep it simple but also a bit more flexible than blogger.

Much appreciated.

Blogger allows me to point my newly purchased domain name to my xxxx.blogspot.com page for FREE while WordPress charges $10 per year (I know not a lot)

The main feature I want is if for example I find out tonight that the club is cancelled on Thursday night I need  something prominently displayed as a sticky at the TOP of my blogspot or wordpress page. So with blogspot if I post a "cancellation" blog entry but another 2 people post on the blog AFTER me then this important notice is moved down in chronological order.
Is it a case of finding one of the 100's of widgets that I can lock in the top of the left/right column to highlight such an important notice?

I understand that with Wordpress it doesn't have to be a chronological type blog so it sounds like I can "sticky" this sort of entry to the top easier?

Thanks!

Excellent, thanks a lot! :)

Thanks f0dder, I setup a test page with my gmail blogger account last night and so far I think it may do just enough and is certainly very simple for anyone to post to and maintain. I'll check out Vanilla as well. Thanks again.

Housetier, just seen your reply as well, will certainly investigate - is there something out there which explains to me what is different about WordPress compared to what Blogger can do?

Living Room / Re: Recommend a keyboard
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:02 AM »
Saitek Eclipse I or II - we use v1 in the office at work because I firmly believe these "gaming" keyboards are the best to handle the heavy duty office work, especially as we are programmers and these things get hammered!

v2 I use at home having upgraded from v1 - just as good if not better in my opinion.

I too HATE these keyboards that do not use STANDARD key sizes and layouts as I'm also a touch typist and rely on the keys being where they are supposed to be! :)

Hey all

A local club I'm involved in needs a new website - we've got a new name agreed this evening so I've purchased the domain.
Now, currently the club has THREE different websites developed over the years by different people and also we have a Yahoo Group so a weekly newsletter can be emailed out to everyone who has joined the group.

I have plenty of web design skills myself but what I don't want is for me or anyone else to build a website up that only that ONE person knows how to update or maintain...

This is where I'm open to suggestions PLEASE :)
My idea was to maybe try blogger.com i.e. the website just needs to be blog based so a select group of us are able to post and moderate it - this would be an excellent easy to use route for getting the latest news about the club out to all visitors of the blog page. Minimum maintenance and you can even post updates onto it from your mobile - worth a look at the features you get here: http://www.blogger.com/features

This way we are avoiding custom written websites where only one person has the knowledge to maintain it.
If you were to post the weekly club notes onto here, it can automatically email it out to multiple email addresses for you so this could also replace the yahoo group as well once up and running.

Can anyone with experience in my "keep it simple" approach suggest anything better than my proposed route - do you see any major flaws in doing it this way?

Just needs to be a simple page (hence the blog concept) with the latest news/postings showing at the top and I presume we can FIX some links down the left or right that visitors can click on to find out about the history of the club, what nights it is on and the location.

Really appreciate some more knowledgeable advice - thank you! :)

Regards

Fedorov.

General Software Discussion / Re: FinePrint vs. priPrinter

I think to preview pages properly you should make full use of your screen so to me it makes sense to always have the preview start maxmized. Just my opinion.

I always like to MAXMIZE the PriPrinter preview when it appears as I find the default size way too small. An option to always open maximized would be very useful.
Yes I realise there is an F11 full-screen view but I find this less useful, as you first need to press F11 when you get the tiny preview window and using it full-screen without the toolbars isn't too useful in this case I don't feel.

Discount sounds great!

Did you all see the v1.5 beta link on their main page?
http://www.priprinter.com/beta.htm

Just select 3D mode and view your jobs in 3D. All functionality is available in 3D.

It can be difficult to imagine how your document will look like. priPrinter introduces 3D print preview, which make preview easier. When 3D is selected you may turn over the pages, and do same things as in 2D: select pages and text, adjust margins and gutters, crop pages and change layout.

I agree, can't beat these tools that have great support from their developers, one of the reasons why I use certain tools over others which never get updated.
I think FinePrint 6 has taken a major backward step with it's "new toolbar", the icons look like something from Windows 3.1!!! It was much faster having textual buttons along the bottom like v5 had.

PriPrinter may be getting more customers I feel... :)

I ride unicycles, been doing this for about 5 years now, my 10yr old daughter has been riding since she was 6 as well.
Great fun, VERY ADDICTIVE, great for building peoples self-confidence and keeps you really fit and healthy.
We have LOTS of members at our weekly club, many new members arrive each week through word-of-mouth and on weekends we go out for Muni rides (Mountain Unicycling) - try searching YouTube for "muni unicycle" and you'll see plenty of video clips :)

Living Room / Re: The Great Firewall Hunt ... frustrating ...
« on: July 24, 2008, 07:36 AM »
I'm trying out Online Armor (free version) after a long spell with just windows firewall

Setting it up after install was a pain - it lists all your programmes and asks you to approve them individually
"individually" means you cant select more than one at a time - I tell a lie, you can use Ctrl+click to select more than one but it's still painfully slow (think I gotta uninstall lots from this pc :))

There's still lots of popups but they're reducing in quantity very quickly = I'm happy so far :)

Just to make things easier, they are only the programs that you find in your START menu so you can easily just click the very top level and then click allow.
Of course you should only do this if you know what everything in your start menu is - I do I installed it :)
Choosing allow for them at this stage is only telling OnlineArmor that they are allowed to RUN, not that they can have internet access.
The Program Guard monitors what is allowed to run
The Firewall helps you block anything from getting out.

Hope that helps if you didn't already know this.
Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

To me, if it can't burn multi-session CDs/DVDs then it's not *proper* burning software. I regularly backup my photos or new versions of software onto multi-session DVDs. There is only Nero that I find does a reliable job of this.

Ashampoo Burning Studio worked okay but I went back to Nero as it just never fails me.

Amazes me in some of these "which is best " threads that people recommend ImgBurn or ConvertXtoDVD. ImgBurn is fantastic at what it does, burning image files like ISO's. ConvertXtoDVD is fantastic at converting movie files to DVD format and burning them for you.
NEITHER of them can burn a multi-session data CD/DVD.

All I'm saying here is, asking what is best all depends on what you want the burning software to do for you. Nero/Ashampoo (CDBurnerXP?) are better all-round as they can do multi-session data. ImgBurn is a bit more specific, can't do multi-session. ConvertXtoDVD is even more specific, it's for doing movies to DVD :)

Just an example of how I see these threads everytime they appear :)
