Great discount...

have you used HandiTV or any of the other competing tv on your mobile services?

Nope. The only programs on the list of 40 that I already own are Pocket Informant 8 and Sprite Backup 6 and they are both excellent programs in their respective categories.

Living Room / Re: In-car GPS
« on: December 14, 2008, 07:47 AM »
Okay, I admit it, I have NO sense of direction.
Put me down at the south pole and I'd try to go south to get home.

-cranioscopical (December 13, 2008, 01:33 PM)

I can relate to your "No sense of direction"

I have a very poor sense of direction and likewise for my son.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I visited Sydney and Melbourne with my family and a GPS loaned by my sister in-law sure helped like us feel like local taxi drivers.

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - Car navigation
"GO 730 Australia
• IQ Routes™ technology
• Advanced Lane Guidance
• TomTom Map Share™ technology
• Map of Australia
• Voice address input
• Hands free calling
• QuickGPSfix™
• FM transmitter"
http://www.tomtom.co...?ID=0&Language=8

It was particularly helpful in Sydney and it would have been impossible not to get lost there and probably wasted lots of time and even possibly gotten involved in an accident due to confusion navigating the roads.

I did not have the screen mount but my son used it to help us navigate like pros.

There were a couple of occasions when the GPS got confused because there were too many buildings that obstructed the GPS signals.

When we got into a tunnel, the GPS was unable to receive a signal, but it was smart enough to project where we were based on the speed we were traveling just before we got into the tunnel - that was quite cool.

I think if I had the windscreen mount, it would have help even more as I would be able to tie the voice instructions from the GPS with a quick glance.

My sister in law swears by it and love it.

The voice directions were fairly intelligible and if you combine it with a screen mount, you would probably be able to understand it without endangering yourself.

It does give you adequate warnings like how far you are before you reach the turn and gives you a progressive update before you make the turn.

It also allows you to tell it to avoid certain roads.

It warns you of camera junctions, that you are exceeding speed limits (if it's in the database)

But one thing it does not do is warn you of roadworks - we got stuck in a jam that had roadworks going on.

It would be ideal if it had a link somehow to local traffic conditions database.

In any case, I think a GPS is kind of free since if you have a poor sense of direction, just think of all the petrol you can save with a GPS, not to mention a lower risk of accidents that can occur from getting lost.

I never got around to using voice commands so I cannot comment on that.

This is likely one of the best Password and Automated Form-Filler.

Try filling in all the details when you book say airline tickets for several persons for a trip involving a few people with say flights over 3 or 4 destinations, then you will really only just begin to appreciate the beauty of Roboform.

I don't know of any alternative application that work as well as Roboform - not perfect but quite close to it and it's updated fairly regularly and works with many browsers.

superboyac, I suggest doing the following:

1. in your Powermarks options, in the Startup section, check "Start Powermarks when Windows starts"
2. in your Powermarks options, in the Hotkeys section, set "Add bookmark from browser" to alt+ctrl+=
3. if you haven't already, install AutoHotkey and read the tutorial for basic info on how it works
4. create a new file called hotkeys.ahk, copy the code below into it (modified for your hotkey), and save it
5. set the hotkey to be defined for your system at startup by adding a shortcut to hotkeys.ahk to your startup folder
6. reboot

^+=::
Clipsave = %Clipboard%                    ; save the current clipboard contents
WinActivate Firefox                       ; move to the Firefox window
WinWaitActive Firefox                     ; wait until the Firefox window is active
   Send !d^c                                 ; copy the page's URL
Send !^=                                  ; simulate the hotkey for "Add bookmark from browser"
WinWaitActive Bookmark Properties         ; wait until the new blank powermark appears
Send {Tab}                                ; move to the URL field
ControlGetFocus, ControlName              ; wait until we're at the URL field
   loop
   {
      if ControlName = Edit7
         break
      sleep 50
      ControlGetFocus, ControlName
   }
Send ^v                                   ; paste in the URL
Send !f                                   ; hit the Fetch button
WinWaitActive Updating Powermark          ; wait until the fetch finishes
   ControlGetText, ButtonText, Button1
   loop
   {
      if ButtonText = OK
         break
      sleep 50
      ControlGetText, ButtonText, Button1
   }
Send {Enter}                              ; close the fetch window
WinWaitActive Bookmark Properties         ; wait until the fetch window closes
Send {Tab}{Del}^+{End}{Del}               ; delete the fetched keywords so I can enter my own
Clipboard = %Clipsave%                    ; restore the previous clipboard contents
   return

Now, Powermarks and AutoHotkey will run in the background. Hitting shift+ctrl+= will run the code associated with that hotkey. One of the things that code will do is simulate pressing alt+ctrl+=, which you've set in Powermarks as the hotkey to add a bookmark. You don't have to mess with compiling the script.

A: Additional line needed for code
I found that it is necessary to add this line to the top of the script

SetTitleMatchMode 2

The reason is that if you do not, then autohotkey will not be able to find the Firefox window unless Firefox appears as the first word in the title bar.

See extract of the autohotkey help file below
----------------
Sets the matching behavior of the WinTitle parameter in commands such as WinWait.

SetTitleMatchMode, MatchMode
SetTitleMatchMode, Fast|Slow

Parameters
MatchMode
One of the following digits or the word RegEx:

1: A window's title must start with the specified WinTitle to be a match.
2: A window's title can contain WinTitle anywhere inside it to be a match.
3: A window's title must exactly match WinTitle to be a match.
-----------------

B: Errors in Powermarks Bld 387 menus and also in the help file (Shortcut Keys portion)

Another point to note is that in Powermarks Bld 387, the second and third items are incorrectly labeled. The hotkeys are also incorrect. Crtl+Ins does not work and should have been Alt+ A instead

Add from Clipboard          Alt+A
Fast Add from Clipboard   Crtl+Ins

In fact they are both the same items so the correct labels are :

Fast Add from Clipboard    Alt+A
Fast Add from Clipboard    Alt+A

Note that in the help file, which has not changed since Bld 344, the help file says under shortcut keys says

Ctrl+Ins    Fast Add - Add bookmark from browser with no editing
Alt+Ins     Add URL from clipboard

In fact both the listed shortcut keys Ctrl+Ins and Alt+Ins do not work. So you can safely ignore them.

Too bad, there were no bug fixes for them

But no matter, if you follow twinkler's ahk script and just use Twinkler's shortcut hotkeys, Powermarks will work as advertised.

When I have sometime, I'll likely take a closer look at Power Favorites to determine if it is worthy of being a Powermarks alternative, or even better, hopefully surpass it.

But in the meantime, I'm at least back in Powermarks heaven.

Hopefully, someone will find a way to create a button for Firefox, to attach a autohotkey command to it.

85
Nevertheless, as I said, tomorrow I'll try compiling my script and see if I can attach it to a button for the Firefox users who want one.

Twinkler, I've been off this thread for a little while as I've been too busy. I would like to refocus this thread back to Powermarks work arounds.

Have you managed to compile the script and attached it to a button for us Firefox users ? Thanks

I only read the book partially so far (and a while ago), so I don't recall any specific advice regarding 'keeping it in front of you'

There's no specific advice on keeping it in front of you. But he does talk about a "Closed List" - ie one that does not keep expanding.

On his 1 page Quick Start Guide - How to get everything done by Doing It Tomorrow just before page 1 of his book, he says :

1. Put all the work that you are behind on in backlog folders (email, paper, etc.) and put it where you can't see it.
2. Collect all your incoming work during the day and deal with it in one batch the following day. Group together similar activities like email, paper, phone calls and tasks. Aim to clear the lot every day.
3. If anything is too urgent to leave to the following day, write it down on a separate list and action it at a convenient time during the day. Never take even the simplest action without writing it down first.
4. Spend some time on clearing the contents of the backlog(s) first thing everyday. When you've finally cleared them, find something else you want to get sorted and start doing that first thing every day instead.

If you follow this simple process you will be totally on top of new work by tomorrow and you will be well on your way to clearing your backlog.

---------------
My take on the above is that :

I need to keep items in 2 above (what he calls a Closed List) "in front of me" somewhere and what better place for me than the desktop. And that can include items from 3 as well.

And that also ties in with items in 1 he recommends should be "kept where I can't see it"

Post New Requests Here / Do It Tomorrow reminder - Anti-Procrastinator
« on: November 05, 2008, 10:34 AM »
There are important things that I need to get done and one of the ways is to have a constant reminder staring at me whenever I see my desktop.

So it would be nice to have a simple tool that I could hit a hot key, and it would the allow me to add the item and closing it would "burned" it into my Windows desktop.

Once I get it done, I could then hit the hotkey, check it off and then it would be erased from my desktop.

One not so elegant way is to use BGinfo.exe
"Use the Custom button to add special information you define yourself."
http://technet.micro...ernals/bb897557.aspx

It allows me to add to a text file, the contents of which will be "burned" onto the screen - It allows me to determine which corner of the screen the text would be placed. Maybe, some might find this idea interesting and improve upon it.

This is not meant to replace one of those dedicated To do list programs that you might use for Getting Things Done where you list everything to get it out of your head.

This is to help me maintain a few items (probably no more than 10) that I want to keep in front of me - more like what's advocated by Mark Forster's Do It Tomorrow concept which I find more useful.

Update:
Just discovered a thread

No mention of BGinfo.exe there

Wow, thanks for the tip.

It works great.

Only thing now is that I have to figure out how to get the button to show up instead of "Scan with AVG Free" on the toolbar.

I would like configured it to show the icon Image on the toolbar instead because that takes up a lot less screen real estate.

Changing the Label or Tip fields in the DOPUS command editor dialog box makes no difference - ie "Scan with AVG Free" still show up.

It must be picking up the "Scan with AVG Free" from the registry key.

91
I use Dopus as a File Manager.

When I select a file in DOPUS, I can right click the selected file and from the Context menu select Scan with AVG Free.

I would like to simplify this because Right Click to get the context menu and select the Scan with AVG Free command can be a little tedious.

Ideally, I could create a custom button and attach a command to execute AVG Free and scan the selected file.

But I'm not sure how to locate the command the context menu is using.

The command C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgscanx.exe accepts commandline instructions.

But the scanning is quite fast and it appears to be a DOS based command and the scanning results appears momentarily in a DOS windows and disappears before you can even look at it.

The Right Click Context Menu command Scan with AVG Free, brings up a Windows box telling you it's scanning and then the results.

Are there any DOPUS experts around here that knows the answer ?

92
I thought mlo used its Mobile version rather than Outlook as a conduit, though it can sync with Outlook.

You are right. They have their own mlo Mobile Sync Manager and it synchronizes at the record level which is very good instead of at the file level.

If I remember correctly, they used to use Microsoft Activesync.

I thought I would just post the post on Kinook Forums as I had a little bit of trouble loading it earlier on - Just in case it somehow disappears.

I get this Deja Vu feeling all over again.

Round 1 : Polaris Packrat - killed by a buggy upgrade to version 5 - that was a long time ago - maybe early to mid 90s
Round 2 : Ecco Pro - likely killed by M$ Outlook's release. That was probably late 90s
Round 3 : Ultra Recall - placed on life support by the StockShock Market Gyrations in 2008
Round 4 : Any nominations for 2010s

I'm trying hard to avoid Round 4 simply because life gets a bit troublesome when I have some data that still remain in Ecco, some in Outlook, some in UltraRecall.

Thankfully, I have been too busy to even start migrating my PIM data to UltraRecall - I just use it to capture webpages.

I was thinking that a possibility maybe Onenote 2007 with a combination of Outlook - anyone using a combination of these two happily without anything else.

One reason for sticking with M$ Outlook is that if you have a Windows Mobile PIM, you will need Outlook to synchronize it to your Laptop.

Just about any and every Windows Mobile application writer uses Outlook as a conduit - eg Pocket Informant, MyLifeOrganized, Agenda Fusion and probably many others.

Even Ultra Recall has synchronization with Outlook.

Patteo - THANKS After your reply I had another go at reinstalling powermarks
I used End It All to close down everything but the system
I then used Revo uninstaller to uninstall and clean the registry
I then did a clean install

AND IT WORKED

I now realise again how good it actually is - It just works

Thanks Patteo I thought I had lost it  :-[

Eno

Thank you Eno, for mentioning End It All.

I downloaded it like 3 years ago but never got around to install or use it because I was using the free tools from www.sysinternals.com (now absorbed by Microsoft but still free).

By the way, I stopped cleaning my registry years ago because of the controversy over registry cleaning. Which cleaner do you use if I may ask, not that I'm going to start cleaning registry again, but who knows, if I get desperate again one day I may.

I also use powermarks but the since upgrading to IE v7.0.5730.13 I cant seem to get the powermarks toolbar to show I have tried reinstalling powermarks but no joy.  :(

I have tried Power Favourites but find the lack of a last visited column restrictive
Also the lack of time added in the Add date column
miTaggedMarks imported the times visited strait from powermarks Power Favourites didn't
I also find the lack of the rating column annoying

Powermarks is the benchmark for any program I am looking for, no bells and whistles just a program that does its job  :)

I have tried linkman pro and once I got rid of the bits I didn't want on screen found it really good
again though it did not import the visited numbers from powermarks
What I do like about it is from the linkman tool bar in IE7 I can add URLs easily but I can also type into the search as you type box and as you type it shows the results in a box next to it so more that not I do not even need to open the linkman main screen for most of my searching.
If I do need to I can use a hotkey or just open the main screen from the toolbar

I would like to get the toolbar for powermarks working but if not so far for me linkman pro comes next then Power Favourites

As others have said Power Favourites is getting there it just needs to copy all the features that make powermarks so good ( more customisation etc ) and then it could be a winner

Strange, Powermarks works perfectly with IE v7.0.5730.13 for me.
