Thanks again, tomos, THAT worked! Course I still have to download and install drivers but there's a fresh copy of Win 7 Ultimate on the little box :D

127
Thanks, Curt. Yes, I'd already put eSword and a few other apps of that sort. Good catch!

@Tao: yep, that's a possibility. Only problem is that she's so technically unsavy, that any problems at ALL and she'd not know how to reconnect wirelessly.

128
Hmm, I'll try that, tomos, and let you know... thanks!

Thanks for the link, Shades.

Unfortunately, I cannot even reach Step 1 in SJ's post:

1.   Boot from appropriate OS media.

Nothing I've tried has allowed me to boot from a bootable USB stick, and the PC has no CD drive.

A coworker gave me a Dell Dimension 4600. She was gonna throw it away, and I was like, "NO!!"

Naturally, it was garbaged up. I installed a fresh copy of Win XP on it, downloaded and installed Service Pack 3, and it's doing okay. I've ordered RAM to upgrade it from 512Mb to 1.5Gb. The lady I'm giving it to is not very computer savy, but likes to watch DVDs, listen to music, and play games. She's particularly fond of 50s and 60s music, so I'm getting a bunch of that ready, and putting some rotating 50s/60s-era desktop images on the machine.

Any suggestions on software she might enjoy or benefit from?

I put the whole 5-CD Microsoft Encarta encyclopedia on it (she loves that sort of thing). It has Power DVD 4.0.

Note: the lady is indigent and cannot afford internet, so that isn't an issue. I'll get the machine as tuned up as possible and make a backup image in case I need to visit her in future and restore the PC.

What I'm after is suggestions on ways to modify the machine, software suggestions, etc., bearing in mind that this is an older person (in her mid-70s, of sound mind but has been ill for many years).

I inherited a little mini-PC. No CD drive. Just has a small SSD. Problem is: won't boot. I've tried manipulating BIOS. Got it to look at USB keys first in boot order. And I have a USB key with WinXP Pro 64x installation files (which would be fine, for this little PC, though naturally I prefer Win7 which I don't have an installation disc for). It obviously tries to access the USB key. I see the key light up and flash, but I get a Missing Boot Manager screen. I take it the Win7 installation that was originally on the SSD is dorked. It's a Lenovo ThinkCentre M53 Tiny. The OEM Lenovo Restore software runs from the Recovery partition, but is unable to fix the problem. And when I try to access a 500Gb USB removable drive (on which I have a backup image), Lenovo Recovery won't detect the removable drive.

Any ideas on how I might restore this little machine? Never again will I fool with a PC that doesn't have a CD drive...

Living Room / Re: The end of the hard disk

I took the plunge and went with mini PCs for replacements (Gigabyte Brix and Compulab Fit), using only SSD internally running Windows 7. With hundreds of hours of use and large amounts of data transferred, including dozens of different software programs, neither one has so much as burped...

I'm running an itty-bitty PC -- the Lenovo ThinkCentre M53 Tiny. Love it! 8 GB RAM and a 120GB SSD for the OS...

Are you saying you're trying to boot your system when both the original and clone are connected?

Yes, that's what I was attempting: go into boot options and select D instead of C (where D is the drive to which the clone was made). D is a spare HDD connected through a USB-connected dual-bay enclosure.

134
I use EaseUS backup with preOS enabled. It hasn't failed me yet. But it would be a good feeling to have another Win boot disk.

135
Also, anyone heard of or used a Bounceback Drive. Here's one on Amazon:

CMS drive

The claim is:

The BounceBack Drive is the ultimate backup and recovery solution. This powerful system creates a duplicate copy of your computer's hard drive so that if your internal hard drive is corrupted or damaged, you can startup (boot) directly from your BounceBack Drive...

I've successfully cloned my active partition "Windows 7 OS" using Drive Image XML, EaseUS Todo Backup's clone utility, etc., but none of the clones are actually bootable (go into BIOS and choose the newly cloned drive as boot disk). Someone told me Casper truly does create bootable cloned operating disk. Anyone know?

Thanks for those hyperlinks, 4wd. I'm a long-time user of Faststone Capture, but I'm gonna give Greenshot a go...

138
I have a few friends/family who backup important documents and the occasional system image to one of my hard disks via Tonido. Anyone know if there is a way, from within Tonido, to set a quota on a particular guest user's assigned share? Can't find anything about this via search, and I'm thinking you have to upgrade to the paid FileCloud for this feature. If that's the case, I was thinking of whipping up a quick directory watching app in C# that would run in the background and email friends and family when they're approaching their quota. It would, of course, email me as well.

LOL, x16wda  ;D

How many gigs of RAM you running?

140
Curious about FolderCache and PastePath...

141
Yep. Fixed my title.

CarotDAV is growing on me. One single interface, and in a few clicks I've uploaded my important directories from work and home projects to: OneDrive, GoogleDrive, Box.com, Dropbox, etc.

Tonido is sufficient for my needs.

Note: I'm connected at 100Mbps. Program seems to average upload speed of about 4 Mb/minute for me; but it's steady and has been running for several hours without a problem. It doesn't seem to slow/affect my other internet activities.

Here's a screenshot. It's uploading a 7+ GB directory with no hiccups...

Yeah, I don't think it can be used as a server. But yes, it does permit you to access Box, GDrive, Dropbox, etc., as if they were local folders and files.

^ Dunno, super.

I'm using it to update contents of Dropbox and Box.com, as well as to access two FTP accounts. Works well.

Just discovered this app, CarotDAV. Single interface from which I can access my ftp accounts, Box.com, Google drive, etc., etc. Nice!
