Gotcha, mouser. Well, the tool our IT department used lets you submit URL links that you state are outdated (which is really true in our case, since they're no longer on the website). Supposedly, these submissions alert Google that the site needs to be re-indexed and cached search results that are no longer valid need to be expunged.

We've run into this situation at work, recently, where a site was taken down but various URLs are still cached from Google's crawlers. The company has used the Request Removal tool to submit these links for removal. Anyone had any experience with this and how long it typically takes for removed sites to be re-indexed?

I like the pro version. It lets me defrag both my SATA hard drive at work, and my SSD on my home machine (has a special procedure so that it doesn't screw up the SSD).

After (came out 2012) was a B+ movie that could have been grade A if it'd had better production/casting.

Though not a movie per se, I've been enjoying the sci-fi series "Extant", featuring Halle Berry.

I got into it a few expansion sets after the original, so I never owned any super-valuable cards (Black Lotus, etc.) Still, sold some Uncommon and Rare cards a time or two when I had trouble making rent.

well i never played magic the gathering, though i have watched some of it being played -- and from watching i know it can get quite complicated.
there has been a rebellion against the "collectible" aspect of card games, as seen in magic the gathering, and most new deck builders do not follow this path.
instead there are fixed card sets that everyone can by for affordable prices and there aren't these super rare expensive cards, etc.

I was really into Magic The Gathering for several years (1993-1996). Still own quite a few custom-built decks. The problem I have with MTG is that there is power-bloat in successive card sets when compared to earlier card sets. They let things get a bit out of control in that area.

Yes, VLC is installed and is associated with common video formats. I dunno if she likes Solitaire. I've added some audio books as well.

I typed "cat" instead of cat (without quotes).

General Software Discussion / What online services do you pay for?
« on: September 05, 2015, 05:17 PM »
I've always been very frugal when it comes to software purchases, whether they be installation CDs, one-time purchase/download via Internet, or online services. But, lately, I've been paying for two services, and am very pleased with both - LastPass, and PIA (a VPN provider). I am not affiliated with either and am not advertising for them.

LastPass, at $12 for a year of service, is more than worth it, for me at least. I frequent about two dozen websites, both at home and at work. Using the LastPass add-on for Firefox Portable, I only have to log-in to LastPass once at the beginning of my work day (or my online session, if at home computer). In the case of my home PCs, I could have the browser remember passwords, but that's not as secure, and I especially don't like the idea of doing that for financial sites. At work, I've got to have privacy protection. I love that, after logging in to LastPass, a single click on a stored site in their database, and the add-on applies my very strong password and logs me in. I admit I had been guilty of password reuse across various sites, before using LastPass.

I've been really pleased with Private Internet Access VPN. Works great across my PCs, iPhone, and Android tablet.

The family has had Netflix for years, and there are seven of us tapping into it constantly, so no question we're getting our money's worth out of it.

What services do you pay for, and what makes them worth the cost, to you?

I don't do any high-end video-gaming, so I really don't need a potent graphics card or fastest CPU available. However, I do notice that the 3.0 GHz i5 computer I use at work loads my portable apps launcher noticeably quicker than the 2.41 GHz J2900 chip and 8 Gb of Ram on my home machine. Right now, I've got two systems linked on a home network -- a 2.41 GHz machine on 8Gb Ram, and a 2.8 GHz machine on 6Gb Ram, both running Windows 10. No need to change, based upon my needs.

I watched Phantom Halo (I think it came out in 2014) the other night. At first I thought it was gonna be a truly low-grade B movie. But it actually was pretty good. Two teens struggle to get by as their alcoholic, gambling father blows through whatever money they come by. Not 5-stars, but it has some life themes and morals that -- for me, at least -- made it not a waste of time.

I love my Kindle Fire for ebook reading. Crystal clear.

I'm running 6GB RAM on one of my Windows PCs, 8 GB on the other. Like BGM, I wouldn't go less than 6.

@app103:

Where does Dclock2 store user data, such as To Do Lists? Never mind, I see, now.

@app103:

Yes, we visit this lady once a month and cook her a meal and eat with her. On those visits I will go online by tethering my cellphone to her PC via a wireless dongle. I can then update antivirus definitions. Avast is configured for manual updates only.

Okay, it's not a bad machine. Pentium 4 running at 2.66 GHz. I've bumped RAM from 512M to 1.5G. Running WinXP Home SP3. Avast. Filling the drive with books (audio and text), movies, hidden obj/puzzle/sim games. Using FSL Launcher. Will make her some screencast tutorials.

119
I didn't have any tech issues deriving from my upgrade, but I have to say I'm a bit surprised at Microsoft's crudeness:

Thanks, mouser and app. Good suggestions!

121
Just an update. Got chipset driver, wireless and LAN drivers installed and this machine is humming with Win 7 Ultimate, running on 8GB RAM on a SSD.

122
Thanks, guys. Got some downloads from there, and hopefully will get LAN driver successfully installed.

123
I have some audiobooks loaded for her. Also, introducing her to mobi ebooks.

124
So, I've got a nice, shiny new installation of Win 7 Ultimate x64, but no software came with the unit. I went to Lenovo's website to get drivers, and naturally they aren't available currently:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/thinkcentre-m-series-desktops/thinkcentre-m53

Anyone know where device drivers for the Lenovo ThinkCentre M53 Tiny might be obtained?

125
^ Mmm, yes, good suggestion, mouser. Maybe MonkeyWrite or FocusWriter.
