Living Room / found safer payment method?
« on: August 20, 2009, 02:46 PM »
I've been looking for a safer way to pay for online purchases for about three years. Yesterday I was told about a way that looks good and, since a Google search turned up a relatively small number of hits, I thought I'd pass it along. The name in the URL is vanillamastercard. It is a prepaid card in $25, $50 and $100 amounts and the site seems to say you can give as little as your zip code or postal code for the seller to check for confirmation. You seem to be able to also supply your address or name or email address and that reads like it is optional. The 'https' site is a bit tricky to locate but there are links to it on other sites that describe it. Cheers, sword

"if you'd like to gimme a little explanation, feel free to do it '...gathered...organized...sent to temporary formatting folders...' "
and "and this is interesting too 'adding a small number of tags to the filename' ".

Reply:

Short:
Save all with a unique name. Add section numbers or 'types'. Format. Add notes, summaries and tags. Transfer to sections for processing.

Details:
All searches and sessions get saved by a filename that is a number, representing the date. Today (August 20, 2009) is 9820. This number remains wherever the file is moved or whenever it is edited. Today's first session gets an 'a' tacked on and an optional 'type' such as 'S' for search or 'section' such as '33' for (gthgly) [gather genealogy]. All files [ about fifty in two weeks] are saved to partition 'E:" and a brief list of keywords is added at the top of the file. Every couple of weeks these files are saved to CD and, for about sixty percent of all files, that is all that is done. File summaries are made about every two weeks as well, where filenames and keywords are collected and saved in a file named by date range, M, to date range such as 9726M9708. For the more valuable files I add paragraph numbering of the clips, some section number to the filename and usually a brief summary before saving to 'E:'. The best of these files get edited with highlighting and notes before saving to 'E:'. Only about five percent of the best files get a tag added to the filename. The files with section numbers and tags are moved to one of two other boxes for the interesting processing in Wordperfect, Publisher or OneNote and the information is put in tables, outlines or charts for easier analysis. The folder layout on these boxes is numerical: 1 [for pln/plan], 11 [plnorg/plan organize] and the numbering is deeper, such as1511[plan interests art watercolor]. I don't need the section numbers or types any more so a 'quality' number is added to the front of the filename before saving. The end result is something easily read, like an outline, easily searched [find and list files with the tag "plnhow" containing the name "photoshop"] and easily changed or moved, since they are by number. I end up with something like a reference manual or 'how-to' for topics and interests.
The main thing is that the system is easy to use, read or search and can be implemented in any application because the file names have the same components and the summary information is the same in FireFox, saved files, WordPerfect and all other applications.
This might look quite complicated but it can be simple and easy to use. Setting up the folders is the hardest part. Then save, add type or section to the name, format, tag and use.

Reply:

Short:
Tags are folder name combinations added to important material to aid searches.

Details:
For me, interests and projects change a lot over time. I needed a tag system that did not change [too hard to remember]. Since the general layout of folders remains constant, I use the 'parent folder name' plus 'child folder name' for the tag. I add this to the end of the filename for the best files. Most are self-explanatory and easy to remember, such as 'plnhow' for plan how. Currently I'm using 'gthsrc' [gather search] and 'fnfppl' [file information people] a lot. There are usually about ten or twelve tags that get used a lot. Later, after the files get processed and put in an outline of folders [see above], I can view the files because they are in the right sections and tagged and have a value added to the front of the filename. Tips about formatting WordPerfect macros can be found under section 5211 [5=tip, 2=fmt, 1=wpr, 1=mac] and the filename is usually of the form 6B9820aStipfmt. I find it easy to change the 'value' of the information by changing the first number in the name [ 6=excellent, 7=good, 8=fair, 9=poor]. B means 'best' and it is one of several optional 'types' A-J [A=easiest, B=best...H=portable...].

Uriel,
You might take a look at WinWorkBar v1.1 (593 KB). It has tasks and notes and a calendar as well as menu for priorities and a progress bar.

I should probably have mentioned that the quotes came from 'smeraldo' August 11, 2009 08:47:24, who seems to have raised the topic again. Sorry for any confusion, J-Mac.
Yes, it is the way I tag. I'm one of those who got bogged down with too many tags early on and settled on the simple system of adding a small number of tags to the filename.

General Software Discussion / Re: Timeline Software
« on: August 14, 2009, 02:31 PM »
Ampa,

I use Microsoft Publisher to make timelines for genealogy that sound similar to what you want to do. They fit on a page that is 44 inches by 36 inches and can cover any time spans. Mine usually cover from 1650 to 1850. It was a bit tricky setting up the underlying strip of dates but I will gladly share the components if you have Publisher.

Re: smeraldo's questions August 11, 2009 08:47:24
HOW "any new system or software...save web pages...folder style organization...tag (or even organize) your files..."
AND  "...XP...hard drives/computers...firefox..."
NOT "...too slow, too complicated, too many clicks, too database, too proprietary, too simple..."

My:
XP, Win2000, Win98SE
All pages/data gathered with FireFox, organized in RTF, JPG or BMP and sent to temporary formatting folders .
Folders and sub-folders have distinct, three-letter names in five sections. Names can have number equivalents.
Example:      equivalent to:
pln         1
   org         11
   tod         12
prs         2
   tod         21
   gen         22
gth         3
   txt         31
   src         32
   gly         33
fnf         4
   org         41
   ppl         46
tip         5
   eml         51
   fmt         52

Numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 in folder names are reserved for current priority numbers. O (zero) is used for indexes.
All new data is saved under a file name using date (YMDD) where 13 Aug 2009 is 9813 and a letter (a, b, c).
Optional:
Capital letters A through J are reserved for codes A/safest, B/best, etc. and Capital Letters after J are reserved
for use in filenames for M/summary, O/outline, R/reply, S/search etc. as needed. Folder numbers can be used
in filenames for convenience, example: 9813aS33 [ first search in 33 = gth/gather gly/genealogy ].

Gathering is with FireFox and: ScrapBook; QuickNote (77KB); Shelve (38KB), [needs AutoIT]; Textise (8KB);
Snapper (about 110KB) and Zotero (1198KB) [seldom used]. In stead of Zotero, I use Quote URL text (12KB) in
FireFox2 [it only runs in FireFox up to v 3].

Clips are saved using, in order of preference: Advanced Clipboard Manager [needs Java 6]; ClipMate; KeyNote
v1.6.5; ScrapBook; MS OneNote; MS ClipBook.

Formatting is applied with simple editors: Wordpad, Keynote, QJot and saved temporarily to drives D: or E:
before being indexed and saved to disk, in flat files (no folders) or transferred to other boxes to be used with
other applications: WordPerfect; MS Publisher; DreamWeaver (in tables); DataBase Pro; ACT; OneNote.

Tags are made from the parent folder name plus folder name, example: gthgly [see above] and I use only about
a dozen tags and only for about two percent of the most important files. Searching with WordPerfect or Windows
Find is usually very fast and the files are available to all of my applications. Useful files are saved as, or renamed,
something like 51S8712aB6tipeml = tip, email, Search, 2008, Jul, 12th, item 'a', Best, priority 6, tag: tipeml. A
lot of files remain as 8712b

Why use numbers? Where folders are added or deleted frequently, the order remains constant.

182
I use Advanced Clipboard Manager to view simple clips. It is not a Firefox add-on but it works well with Firefox and clips are easily opened in WordPad. Probably in other open editors too.

183
I found it necessary to keep simple charts about family groups away from the process of entering information. I think you would find MS Publisher or WordPerfect easier to use than MS Word for charting. Horizontal charts with each generation on a separate level are fine for small numbers of people but vertical formats, where each newer generation is indented and on a new line, is better for anything over three or four hundred.
It might save you a lot of time to try to see if you have any distant cousins who have done work on your family. See the Rootsweb Surname List or Ancestry - WorldConnect or the LDS Family History Centers or a local genealogy society in your area. The folks at the LDS were the most help in my early efforts. A good numbering and file system is worthwhile.

Living Room / CD/DVD burning service vs download
« on: November 29, 2005, 02:44 PM »
I've had some great service recently from some folks who offer a CD/DVD burning service. In the past I could only get three out of four from 1) wide selection, 2) reasonable price, 3) fast delivery, 4) pay using PayPal. On-Disk has it all making copies from URLs you supply. http://on-disk.com/request.php

Living Room / Re: Flowchart and Diagramming Review
« on: November 13, 2005, 01:01 AM »
I was initially going to review mindmapping but I'm open to directions. I have Mindmanager Personal and put a trial copy of Ygnius mindmapping by Gael on one box. Liked it but it is complicated. I could put it on another box to review it. Doing it in another review is okay with me too. Please call the shots. I'm' really new to this. Both programs, above, were on a CD with "The Knowledge Management Toolkit" ISBN0-13-009224-X.
I will try to pare down the list. I find the use of tables where the program is at the top and the abilities are listed in rows to be nice to use. So far one of the best I've seen is the JAZZ one. I like zoom, poster sized pages, layers and transparency for what I do. I've been making my own with MS Publisher 2002 but I would like a fresh one. I added diagram studio with a .TIF screenshot and a list of features to my notes [ thanks brotherS]. I will look at the new free flowcharting apps by tsaint but did not see them a minute ago. Must have gotten lost. About half of my original 146 sites were dead links and some were duplicates. A google search turned up a lot of matches so there should be lots of others.
Add or delete if you want. Do you add things in the sandbox or under "discussion"? I have a couple of URLs for other sites covering similar reviews if anyone is interested. I don't know if it is appropriate to mention it here.
Cheers, sword

Living Room / Flowchart and Diagramming Review
« on: November 09, 2005, 05:51 PM »
I put the first draft in the sandbox. I'll watch for corrections and additions. There should be lots :) I'm having a slow time navigating here, probably because of my lack of experience on similar sites. I have zero hours experience on chat and usenet sites and under one hour experience on, or with, wiki. Any suggestions about how to navigate, like using a sitemap, would be appreciated.

What are the relative frequencies of files found? Google advanced search: ALL of: diagram; Phrase of: x; At least one of: software OR application; Located in: the title of the file. “x” searched for each term, process, relation, etc. and the number found (N) listed.

1.   Diagram

I am weak on knowledge about flowchart applications and a search on this site lists 37 in this category:

I'd like to try to add a bit, if possible, to something in a Flowchart/Diagram section with more details in the diagram section. I'm willing to try a bit of a summary or overview but I don't feel anywhere near qualified to do a complete review. I know almost nothing about most of the high priced and recently released apps. Let me know where to contribute if possible. sword

Please excuse this off-topic message in reply to your suggestion 16 Oct to use Windows 2000 in preference to Win98SE. I have not yet learned how to contact you directly.
Thanks for your suggestion. I recently looked at Windows 2000 for what I want to do. It is currently a bit too expensive for three licensed copies but I'm watching eBay for a bargain. It seems to have some valuable new abilities and properties but I was initially put off by the information, whether correct or not, that Windos 2000 was based on NT and that NT could not be used for multibooting.
Thanks again. sword

Hi Noel,

Enigma Insight Publishing Software has a Stylesheet editor with a Tree View showing all folders and files in the left window and every folder or file can be expanded or collapsed. Icons indicate a folder, text paragraph, table or figure. Clicking on a file or folder shows a preview in the lower right window.
Details:
http://www.enigma.com/
Trial software available:
“The XML Handbook”, second edition, Charles F. Goldfarb, Editor, 2000, Prentice Hall, publisher, NJ, pp 551-557, ISBN 0-13-014714-1.
Trial version runs on Windows 95/98, NT, no time limit, and publications can be viewed only.
Used copies are available from $10.00 and should also be available through libraries and eBay [Half Price Computer Books?].

Cheers, Robert

Some of the benefits that might come from multi-booting, and some of the methods, are listed in details at the URLs listed below. I’m not an expert and there probably are easier ways to do any of these things. My reasons for wanting to try to set up multi-booting are: 1) try new software in a clean environment, 2) keep large or problem applications separate [genealogy, MS Publisher, Photoshop, scanner & OCR], 3) keep my favorite file search application [Enigma Insight (free)] separate, 4) have convenient drives or directories on a second hard drive for data, CD burning and tape backup.

My plan is to have 3 primary partitions, hidden from each other, with 3 separate installations of Windows 98SE and an unformatted partition for BeOS v5.03 and  BeMan boot.

Subject: revised Google search for mouser trying to solve problem, “let's say i want to find new pages on the web that mention DonationCoder.com
i can search google and get a list of 500 pages or whatever, but i have no way of coming back next week and saying ‘show me all the new pages which have been found since the last search’ “.

sword: My previous posting used a variation of a search used successfully to find a range of dates such as 1750…1759. When I got a match for “1014” to “10/14” in a file that mentioned “Oct 14” I thought my old search worked with months too.

Here is a revised search that seems to be a slight improvement over bring back 500 results in the last three months:

with all of the words: DonationCoder.com
with the exact phrase: Oct* 7
[Oct* 7 changed to Oct* 8 for next search]
Date: past 3 months
Occurrence: in the text of the page
Domain: Don't return results from the site or domain: donationcoder.com

Search results:
1. Oct* 7: 1-5 of about 8
