Looks like it will be an excellent way to make 'cheat sheets'.

General Software Discussion / search engine plug DDG

I recommend Duck Duck Go as a search engine. It is fun to use, not too complicated and you can set preferences like 'Web Of Trust' icons.

I have been moving to Linux recently. I tried most of the 'live' CD versions and like, in order of preference, Knoppix, Mint v12, Puppy, Vector, Berry. I found using them on a laptop to be *very* frustrating [hardware problems]. I liked Mint v12 so much that I installed it to hard drive a couple of weeks ago and it is fun and the package management works very well [prolog, emacs].  I plan to remaster and burn small live specialist CDs for specific tasks. Cheers.

Living Room / Re: DC Apps alternatives for LInux

ewemoa: I'm interested and I downloaded HFS.deb to my desktop in Knoppix. I would probably use it in Kubuntu or Mint since both say they are Debian based.

This branching to Linux topics is very welcome.

« on: February 06, 2012, 02:51 PM »
My laptop hard drive became unrecoverable before New Years and I have been using Linux 'live' CDs since then. It has been great. I continue using memory sticks and transferring data to another box where I also use 'live' CDs but I installed Linux Mint v 12 to that box. Each 'live' distribution has strengths and my plan is to get an external hard drive holder (Zallman?) that I can put several .iso images on.

Re: Flexible List (data) Management - ListPro and the Alternatives
...field design, and placement, and sorting...
Flexible printing is a real need. Automated Printing - saving a print procedure of various lists...Tab structure would help....
So, are there any List management softwares that are similarly capable, with good printing
Short of database programs (or if you use a database, which one and why ?)

I recommend DataBase Professional by Avanquest (formerly Elibrium), commercial, about $50. USD. Highly customisable, easy (tabbed) data entry, view and print; data table view and print; powerful searching and filtering; form creation and printing; import data from several file types; provided and custom reports can be edited, saved, exported and printed as well as sorted and filtered. I got three license keys, the CD and manual for the 2003 version from Elibrium and it has been excellent. Any questions about how this early version prints?

Living Room / Slacker radio service
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:58 PM »
One online radio source, www.slacker.com/, has added several new
Latin stations recently. In the US they are; Spanish, Spanish Pop,
Tropical, Regional Mexican, Reggaeton/Hip Hop, Rock En Espanol.

After signup in Canada, the list reverts to Spanish but there is a
work-around by googling to find stations playing, for example, some
Mexican music such as the 'Mazz' station on Slacker. Bookmark
the station, visit it, sign in through Slacker and Slacker will remember
your selection in the 'Recently Played' section.

I like some very specific music genres and I'm off to find them:
- Mexican Norteno influenced by Tex-Mex
- Early blues, only Delta/Louisiana style, with Texas influences
- Traditional Scottish country dance music
- Chamber and Baroque, especially harpsichord and organ
- New Zealand Maori influenced by gospel
- Traditional Hungarian Gypsy. Anyone know if there is a copy online
of "La petite salle blanche"?
Any tips about sources would be deeply appreciated.

Cheers

Re. "...choice of destinations..." by timns on Jan 25, 2011, 05:03:21 PM :
An early version of the Firefox add-on "Shelve" prompted for a list
of folders in a default directory to save highlighted material while online and it also worked for *some* file material, in other windows, outside the browser.

Linux forums are *full* of hardware problems, particularly wi-fi. Wired (ethernet)
modems often work better. 'Live' installs of earlier versions, Puppy v412, Knoppix
v511 and Ubuntu v8.04 often work better on older hardware.

142
I'll second the use of 'live' Linux and Puppy in particular for safety.

Reference of file and file contents tagging methods and ideas. Methods for
photos/images, MP3/audio, HTML and 'cloud' are not emphasized. Tag is
used as equivalent to label or keyword. File retrieval by tag from a list,
separate file, database, 'tree'/folder structure and filters are mentioned in
the sources.  The title and part of the source URL should allow searches.

The expression "Free Beer" is familiar and easily understood if you are old enough. It was used as a gag/joke in early silent movies. It was shown on a sign or billboard outside a theater or meeting place where unsuspecting 'patrons' could be lured in and would have to endure some political speech, propaganda or truly awful performance.

Thanks zridling.
I was using trial-and-error, mostly error. My Toshiba Satellite only likes Knoppix v511. I tried all the other Knoppix versions. Puppy pulp_002 is the only one that works, not v412PAW, v431, v500, v511 on the Toshiba. I think they don't like my Telus DSL modem.

I have had automatic updates.
