Are you surely logged in each time you are browsing the forum ?
Are cookies enabled ?
Does the forum remember your identification automatically ?
(A Guest can not enjoy the first unread post facility.)

Here on SMF software
when you click the "new" icon in topic list -
the display of the updated thread is being positioned
with the first unread post at top of the screen
in the list of sequential posts.
Isn't it on your side ?

It occurs to me if you enter "none" it will be accepted.

I have tested such a choice.
It resulted in registration reject.

Can you declare which browser are you using ?
