General Software Discussion / Re: File Hound 3.08 released
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:29 AM »
I agree with what was said, however, no Unicode support makes me not to use it.

Also, it would be nice to have some buttons and keyboard commands to go to the next/previous instance of the found string. If the document is quite long you have to scroll it until you find the highlighted item. Or did I miss something?

127
Tested your file and it works fine here, despite I have the OpenGL active.

128
I'm using the same equipment, but never noticed such a behavior. A graphic card driver problem, perhaps. Could you post some sample file somewhere, if it's not too big?

129
One of the first engines was nowadays forgotten AltaVista Discovery, but it's some eleven years ago... I was even a member of the beta testers group.

I'd also like to point out again that this thread suffers with constant mixing terms of Desktop Search applications and Filename Search applications (like Everything or Locate32). They're mixed even in the poll!

They are hard to compare, because they have different function and different usage. It's like comparing cars to scooters. Both are used to get you from some place to another. The car is definitely more convenient and faster, but if it comes to moving fast somewhere inside building, for example, what would you choose?

While Desktop Search engines usually support searching for filenames, Filename Search engines don't, and if they do, they do it by realtime scanning the files, which might be quite slow, and usually it's limited to text files only.

That's why many people use both. (At the moment I settled on Exalead and Everything). I'd suggest splitting this thread with polls to two separate, but it's too late, I suppose.

130
Of course, it's not bad at all! And probably the only choice as I can see... Anyway, I'm getting used to it. Thanks again.

131
You're right, I forgot you can't change the font. So, here's another idea: use characters that should have same proportions in all fonts, which are unfortunately only numbers and underline. I could imagine replacing the selected cell with an appropriate number, which might even add to lucidity of the thing, but how to emphasize whether the cell is full or empty? Even the space character has different width... Can you at least use bold or underline attribute?

132
OK, I understand. I agree with #1. Regarding #2, how about displaying something like:

  • underline "_" for empty clips
  • lowercase "c" for non-empty clip
  • en-dash "–" for selected empty clip
  • uppercase "C" for selected non-empty clip

Or something similar, I'll be thinking about this. The cycling through the tooltip would just "raise" the appropriate symbol visually and it would keep the tooltip compact. What do you think?

133
Some time ago I recommended Ditto here, but recently got disappointed with reliability of the latest version. At the same time I realized that I'm seldom using older clips, and that I can live without graphic clips as well. So I tried CCCCtrlC and I'd like to thank you.

But it wouldn't be me if I miss to make some suggestions (hope you don't mind):

1. Fixed number of cccclipboards, possibly as a second command-line parameter

2. Use some kind of highlight (possibly just inverted colors) on the selected cccclipboard, not the parenthesis, which make the whole tooltip changing positions

In my opinion this would improve the usability, especially #2. But thanks again!

General Software Discussion / Re: PDF's
« on: November 11, 2009, 03:11 AM »
I probably missed something, but why Adobe Acrobat Pro can't be a solution? In the case of converting scanned documents I'm regularly using the ClearScan option, which can reduce file size dramatically, and at the same time you have documents with relatively reliable OCR'd text that can be searched and indexed.

If somebody is interested, I can elaborate on this, just recently I managed to convert 260 MB scanned color pages to 13 MB PDF file with text, but I admit this is an extreme case--the document cosisted of small pictures with captions on white background, usually the compression is 1/3 of the original size.

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Idea: A 'polite' reminder/diary system
« on: November 05, 2009, 06:51 AM »
Try Stickies. I'm not sure if it fulfills all your requirements, but at least it doesn't steal focus, which is much appreciated.

136
Just installed Typing Assistant, but almost immediately got disappointed: it doesn't expand according to the autotext case--I mean "ta" becomes "Typing Assistant", but TA, Ta, or tA do nothing. Did I miss something or am I just spoiled with its competitors? Anyway, such a behavior seems to me absolutely logical and inevitable.

To Curt: I'm using for this kind of action Ditto, which allows to assign shortcuts to last clipboard items, so I just type Win-3, Win-2, Win-1 and have the same effect. But I agree, this is a bit different.

137
I had a couple of surprisingly good experiences with DRevitalize. If possible I'd suggest to make a backup of the whole disk first though, I'm usually using DriveImage XML in raw mode.

General Software Discussion / Re: JkDefrag further developed as MyDefrag
« on: September 04, 2009, 04:34 PM »
I agree, there are many applications like this, but MyDefrag can be effectively used even without any knowledge. Just run one of the supplied script and that's all. Which is what I'm doing, because they do all I need, and besides, I admit I'm lazy to delve into the script language. But unlike with the vi editor I don't have to.

IMHO the finest details using the single screen pixels instead of larger squares that cover bunch of clusters at once is more precise and for me thus giving more confidence. Also the detailed zoom and information about the file under the cursor are significant improvements, if you are interested in what's going under the hood.

Regarding the colors, they are explained here and could be changed in the scripts or using the GUI mentioned above.

There are already several GUI's for MyDefrag available, for example:

I don't need any of them, but someone might give them a try.

General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 10
« on: September 02, 2009, 04:54 AM »
I got gradually more and more fed up with Opera and remained faithful only because of some nostalgia--I used it since version 3! I decided to give it a final try when version 10 comes out, so I did. In my humble opinion there are no breathtaking improvements, instead they re-introduce the old issue of clearing and slow redrawing some pages, which was fixed long time ago, and there's still a problem with downloading some files with wrong PHP extension, etc.

So, good bye, Opera. For me the winner is Google Chrome, despite I'll be missing some of Opera's minor but nice features.

Living Room / Re: Betamax (a VoIP company) — a large-scale fraud?
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:00 PM »
Wow! Am I the only one here whose accounts are unblocked suddenly? Or was it a reaction on my previous harsh post (posted on theirs forum, too)?

Anyway, because I lost 78 freedays (that long I had to wait to make a single call), which is a violation of the terms anyway, I don't feel obliged to apologize for my words. Such a behavior is unacceptable and I doubt if I ever top up any of my accounts again.

Anyone else?

143
When I started this thread my intention was to either post an explanation or to remove the question mark in its heading and replace it with three exclamation marks. It seems the latter is the proper conclusion. So, here it is:

Betamax is nothing but a scam!

On theirs forum there's ever growing number of requests for unblocking the accounts, but not a single response from the Betamax team. Also, there's not a single answer to any mail messages sent to them (except for one read receipt).

Somebody on the froum is going to sue them. In my opinion the trouble is that everybody's time is too precious to lose it in an case lost in advance. Most of people there lost less than €10 which is not worth any legal action. And this is the base of the cheat, I suppose. If they manage to rob a million of users, it's not bad money, is it?

They still accept new victims, calling them "users" or "customers". This should be stopped. All we can do is to tell the world. Which I'm doing.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Utility to find UNIQUE set of files
« on: July 31, 2009, 10:46 AM »
ZTree can do this (and much more). If you want to give it a quick run, here's how to perform your task:

  • Log any folders you want to include in the search by pressing "Enter" or "+" for current level, "*" for the whole branch.
  • Press "S" for Show all.
  • Press "Alt-F4" for Compare.
  • Press "U" for Unique names.

All unique files are now tagged and you can move them (Ctrl-M) or copy (Ctrl-C) or rename (Ctrl-R) or whatever.

You can also create macro for such a task.

Good luck!

145
Great. Looking forward!

I'm still expecting photographic documentation of BabyCody's adventures, something in the style of Amélie Poulain's garden dwarf series. (If you don't know the movie, here's an explaining note with pictures.)

Any plans for such a gallery?

Living Room / Re: The Apollo onboard computer
« on: July 23, 2009, 01:05 PM »
Off-topic, but in reply to the previous posts:

This reminds me good old times I had when I was working at the Research Institute of Radio and Television and I was one of two developers of the the first analog synthesizer in Czech Republic. It was called Antares and you can see it here, but not in the Russian section (sigh!), scroll to the bottom of the page.

Alas, just a few samples were made, the whole thing never made it to serial production, due to the communist government... It sounded really good, like all analog synthesizers.

Sorry for the off-topic, I couldn't resist to my nostalgic memories.

148
Probably not what you need, but just for the case have a look at OpenStreetMap.

149
Then TeamViewer might be for you (mentioned in reply #35 above). Personally, I prefer LogMeIn, but for clients or friends that require just one-time help the TeamViewer is an ideal solution, simple to use, including file transfers, etc.

150
... But I need a search function.

Good search-as-you-type function has Ditto. The latest beta seems to be quite stable, too.
