103  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: USB Flash Drives: What to look for or avoid. on: February 26, 2008, 02:41:13 PM

I got a 512MB Flash Drive a few years ago and I've never lost it. It came with a very durable rubber case that connects to my keychain.

When I use it, I leave my keychain out. So when I grab my keys to go, I'll notice the weird looking hollow rubber shell, grab the USB drive (if I forgot it) and go. If I really lose it, then I've lost my keys too. Which is why I put a txt file on my USB drive with my name and address so if someone is feeling charitable they can return my stuff to me.

Or if they're feeling not so charitable: pop round and help themselves to the rest of your belongings  Wink

You're welcome  cheesy

And now I'm going to print out that pdf - which will make it the only copy in the world, and therefore extremely valuable - and cash in  smiley

OK, now I remember why I gave up on using pages - they're a nightmare to manage  embarassed

And now I remember why I tend to use Screenshot Captor instead of exporting  embarassed

I know, I know; we spent a heap of £ on something we don't use properly, but come on, have you ever tried using Inkscape? I'd happily work down a coalmine a month to save up to buy ANYTHING that meant I didn't need to use Inkscape  Wink

Anyway, back to Shaun.

I've exported all the pages to separate eps files (seems like that's the only way). The page size seems to have got lost on the way but I assume that's manageable?

Amazingly the eps files together are 68Mb but zip down to less than 4Mb  ohmy

Are we getting there?

PS - you may have noticed that right now I'd rather be doing ANYTHING than my proper work  cheesy
106  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Can't open old CorelDraw (v4?) file - help please! on: February 18, 2008, 04:16:31 PM
Ah, didn't realise - perhaps I should say notice/bother to check  Wink there was more than one page.  But they ARE all in the .cdr file; 15 pages. I left the 'this page only' tick on when I exported rather than saved which is why they're in the cdr but not the others.

I've got to confess I don't use pages that often (indeed, at all!) so I'm not sure how to export multiple pages without them layering over each other.

Maybe you need to reinstall Corel.

I've exported it to pdf - the original appears to be 300 dpi so I've exported lossless to that. Does that help?

107  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Can't open old CorelDraw (v4?) file - help please! on: February 18, 2008, 01:23:32 PM
No problems opening it in X3

Sorry to have a bit of a dig, but having experience of Oracle based applications as an end user, I'm struggling to see how the words 'Oracle' and 'Coherence' can be used in the same sentence.

And the words 'Oracle' and 'simple' shouldn't even appear in the same domain.  Wink

How about popping up a tooltip with file properties when you hover an icon in the results list?

I open music files using FARR and it would be helpful to see bitrate and other information before playing a song.
111  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: how to turn off XP's accessiblity options on: February 10, 2008, 04:24:03 AM
Aren't you approaching this from the wrong perspective?

If you turn off the accessibility options how are users with disabilities going to be able to use the computers?

Shouldn't you be doing quick cards to put by the machines that guide users how to temporarily turn off the options while they're using software where the accessibility options clash?

And thinking longer term - you didn't really say what this software was but off the top of my head I'm struggling to see what the educational value is of a piece of software that requires users to press the same key many times in a row  huh  - unless it's some psychometric test to see how quickly they get bored with repetitive pointless tasks  Wink

I don't know what country you're in, but from a legal point of view have you considered whether or not you're breaking disability discrimination laws by having software that apparently can't be used by students with disabilities?

Apologies for opening up a can of worms for you  cheesy

It obviously presents just as much threat as an autohotkey script  huh

I've sent it off to them for testing - this is just a warning for you.

115  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner on: January 14, 2008, 07:31:10 PM
I use Duplicate File Finder by Rashid Hoda which has plenty of options and will find duplicates even if they have different names and/or are in different folders.

See screengrab attached.

Development seems to have ceased though, his website is down and has been for months, and it's tricky to find on the web.

I found a download link to version 1.1.0.2 - I use 1.1.0.3

It is/was freeware but I don't think it was open source - I wonder when it starts to count as abandonware?

I could post the installer but I'd probably be in breach of the license, even if it was freeware and the developer awol.

Have you tried Nuance Omnipage ?

Can't guarantee it'll work - I use it for OCR rather than this kind of thing.

Am I the only person in the world using Password Agent?
How does it compare with keepass and roboform, or even formautofiller ?

Now that's a good question  cheesy

Haven't tried Roboform, Formautofiller looks like it just, err, fills in forms, which isn't something I need. Just downloaded keepass and I'm impressed; similar concept to Password Agent but a nicer look and feel. I also get the impression it does a lot more too.

I'll run both together for a couple of weeks to see what I think.

I'm liking KeePass - it was easy to export all my Password Agent entries across and it feels a lot slicker. I think I'll keep it and start using it full time.  smiley

Doesn't surprise me - go out in London or Manchester on a Friday or Saturday night and you'll get more Bluetooth ads beamed at you than if you'd stayed at home watching Ant & Dec  Wink
121  DonationCoder.com Software / Screenshot Captor / Re: Help interfacing with other programs. on: December 31, 2007, 05:58:05 AM
SC is a fantastic tool, but I'd rather eat ground glass than use it for screen recording rather than one off shots.  Wink

If you're happy to record as continuous video (so you can then go back and take individual shots manually) there are a few free options such as CamStudio.

But if you want an individual screenshot each time the screen or window changes, you should be looking at Captivate.
122  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: [bug report] 'Switch from Large to Small Icons on Dirlist' display problem on: December 28, 2007, 02:50:50 PM
You mean here?

Nope, the max entries option doesn't make a difference - even if the number of results are well below the max entries figure the last one still gets clipped off.

I've switched to large icons in the results display instead.
123  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: [bug report] 'Switch from Large to Small Icons on Dirlist' display problem on: December 28, 2007, 02:24:39 PM
i dont know why some people get font size problems while others dont.. do you have large fonts enabled on your windows?

one workaround for now is to go to options and customize the font settings and row heights.  you should be able to configure it to look right.

Hi Mouser - no, my fonts are normal size, and changing the font height makes no difference - the results box just shrinks to match so I get exactly the same amount of information.

I'm not convinced it's the font size anyway - however many results there are (subject to the max entries option) the last one always drops off the foot of the display.

Incidentally the bug is also present when choosing 'Small Icon Report' in Options > Display > Results Display Syle
124  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / [bug report] 'Switch from Large to Small Icons on Dirlist' display problem on: December 28, 2007, 07:05:12 AM
Got a minor but slightly annoying bug for you  Wink I couldn't see any other reports of it.

v2.00.145, using XP fully updated with standard display settings.

I've noticed that when 'Switch from Large to Small Icons on Dirlist' setting is ticked FARR cuts off the last result from the view, though you can scroll down. If there's only one matching result you don't see any results.

Unticking it corrects the problem.

It seems to also apply to combinations of dirs and files.

A couple of screenshots attached plus one showing my display options. Changing the skins or not using skins at all don't make a difference.

Thanks  smiley
