103  DonationCoder.com Software / LaunchBar Commander / Explore sub folder part way down a folder node? on: September 04, 2008, 03:46:02 PM
When following a folder node along, sometimes I don't want to open a document within the final subfolder, but open an Explorer window (or in my case a Dopus lister) showing the contents of a subfolder higher up the tree.

Is that possible? I can't figure out a way to do it if it is  cheesy

Thanks

No it hasn't. Someone else has. Read the story again.
105  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Nero - WHY? on: July 28, 2008, 09:24:17 AM
Thanks for the link but I never have problems with single layer DVDs and I have plenty of sources for cheap ones - it is dual layer discs I have problems finding at a reasonable price and consistently burnable.

For example - yesterday I burned 4 dual layer DVDs with ImgBurn (I thought I would give it another go). The third disc burned but wouldn't verify so I burned it again in Nero where it burned and verified correctly. This has been my experience in recent months with ImgBurn - regular unverifiable discs which burn fine in Nero. I rarely get a duff Nero disc. Trouble is that a 30% failure rate in ImgBurn is probably about what I expect now (with DL discs - SL discs are fine). And that is unacceptable because the discs are so expensive in the first place.

Not sure how good they are but Scan are selling various 10 pack of 'Aone' dual layers including printable for less than £4.
106  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: What screen recorder is this? on: July 26, 2008, 11:57:45 AM
Not sure - as it's on the Adobe website I suppose it could be Captivate?
107  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: JOTT - a new cell phone service on: June 06, 2008, 11:33:42 AM
I call my Sipgate number and leave a message - which gets emailed to me as a .wav

Or if I'm abroad I send a text to the same number (it's cheaper).

110  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: USB Flash Drives: What to look for or avoid. on: February 26, 2008, 02:41:13 PM

I got a 512MB Flash Drive a few years ago and I've never lost it. It came with a very durable rubber case that connects to my keychain.

When I use it, I leave my keychain out. So when I grab my keys to go, I'll notice the weird looking hollow rubber shell, grab the USB drive (if I forgot it) and go. If I really lose it, then I've lost my keys too. Which is why I put a txt file on my USB drive with my name and address so if someone is feeling charitable they can return my stuff to me.

Or if they're feeling not so charitable: pop round and help themselves to the rest of your belongings  Wink

And now I'm going to print out that pdf - which will make it the only copy in the world, and therefore extremely valuable - and cash in  smiley

OK, now I remember why I gave up on using pages - they're a nightmare to manage  embarassed

And now I remember why I tend to use Screenshot Captor instead of exporting  embarassed

I know, I know; we spent a heap of £ on something we don't use properly, but come on, have you ever tried using Inkscape? I'd happily work down a coalmine a month to save up to buy ANYTHING that meant I didn't need to use Inkscape  Wink

Anyway, back to Shaun.

I've exported all the pages to separate eps files (seems like that's the only way). The page size seems to have got lost on the way but I assume that's manageable?

Amazingly the eps files together are 68Mb but zip down to less than 4Mb  ohmy

Are we getting there?

PS - you may have noticed that right now I'd rather be doing ANYTHING than my proper work  cheesy
113  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Can't open old CorelDraw (v4?) file - help please! on: February 18, 2008, 04:16:31 PM
Ah, didn't realise - perhaps I should say notice/bother to check  Wink there was more than one page.  But they ARE all in the .cdr file; 15 pages. I left the 'this page only' tick on when I exported rather than saved which is why they're in the cdr but not the others.

I've got to confess I don't use pages that often (indeed, at all!) so I'm not sure how to export multiple pages without them layering over each other.

Maybe you need to reinstall Corel.

I've exported it to pdf - the original appears to be 300 dpi so I've exported lossless to that. Does that help?

114  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Can't open old CorelDraw (v4?) file - help please! on: February 18, 2008, 01:23:32 PM
No problems opening it in X3

CDR, GIF and EPS conversions attached.
115  Other Software / Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Oracle Coherence Software Download for free on: February 15, 2008, 03:50:03 PM
Sorry to have a bit of a dig, but having experience of Oracle based applications as an end user, I'm struggling to see how the words 'Oracle' and 'Coherence' can be used in the same sentence.

And the words 'Oracle' and 'simple' shouldn't even appear in the same domain.  Wink

117  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / [feature suggestion - file properties on mouse hover ?] on: February 10, 2008, 05:27:35 AM
How about popping up a tooltip with file properties when you hover an icon in the results list?

I open music files using FARR and it would be helpful to see bitrate and other information before playing a song.
118  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: how to turn off XP's accessiblity options on: February 10, 2008, 04:24:03 AM
Aren't you approaching this from the wrong perspective?

If you turn off the accessibility options how are users with disabilities going to be able to use the computers?

Shouldn't you be doing quick cards to put by the machines that guide users how to temporarily turn off the options while they're using software where the accessibility options clash?

And thinking longer term - you didn't really say what this software was but off the top of my head I'm struggling to see what the educational value is of a piece of software that requires users to press the same key many times in a row  huh  - unless it's some psychometric test to see how quickly they get bored with repetitive pointless tasks  Wink

I don't know what country you're in, but from a legal point of view have you considered whether or not you're breaking disability discrimination laws by having software that apparently can't be used by students with disabilities?

Apologies for opening up a can of worms for you  cheesy

To be fair to them, it's not the only AV in the world that gives false positives, and they got back to me within 4 hours.

It obviously presents just as much threat as an autohotkey script  huh

I've sent it off to them for testing - this is just a warning for you.

122  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner on: January 14, 2008, 07:31:10 PM
I use Duplicate File Finder by Rashid Hoda which has plenty of options and will find duplicates even if they have different names and/or are in different folders.

See screengrab attached.

Development seems to have ceased though, his website is down and has been for months, and it's tricky to find on the web.

I found a download link to version 1.1.0.2 - I use 1.1.0.3

It is/was freeware but I don't think it was open source - I wonder when it starts to count as abandonware?

I could post the installer but I'd probably be in breach of the license, even if it was freeware and the developer awol.

Have you tried Nuance Omnipage ?

Can't guarantee it'll work - I use it for OCR rather than this kind of thing.
