General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« on: March 12, 2011, 03:07 AM »
There´s another one that could get very important in the future missing in the list: Nanozip
It has the best compression power and its goal is envolving to create new and higher compression algorithms compared to others. Some testfiles have become the half of 7zip in ultra - depending on the data.
You can check out an actual comparison to other archivers here.

Hey, I also could visit cody - I´m also from Stuttgart. Where did you get your new Shackspace?

The mug reached me yesterday but I cannot show it to you atm - the problem is my wife: She said it must stay in the cellar until I get a second cup next year. We´re still using the last two we got for our daily coffee :D.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« on: January 02, 2011, 06:01 AM »
I started reading Perry Rhodan. All of the inventors are dead now but they personally signed this special exemplar. It´s so huge I think I´ll only read a few of them or at least the first big book.
It´s the biggest and oldest SF-Story of the world - written a very long time before Star Wars or Star Trek came up with thousands of releases. It´s more technical than all others showing up with 3D-pictures on the silver books, detailed UFO-construction paintings and deep descriptions of top notch high physics phenomena. This is written technology - others are only story. Very few of them have been translated to english.

I wish all of you a Happy New NANY Year!  :D  (oh, I´ve done this before...)

Happy N.A.N.Y. for all!

Screencast

Description
The Crush Sniffer creates different continous logs of several system events in Linux/Unix.
Because I´ve no deeper experience in Unix-Coding I decided to create a small but handy analyzer that can filter the most important events from these logs and to search at a click the right positions of all logs at the same (or similar) time stamp.
The tool has been created to detect illegal activities or sabotage on special systems - and it worked fine.
This program can be used to sniff the behaviour of other users on your or other computers and check out who have done what and when.
Because of this, the usage is only allowed to system owners or administrators who have the legal rights to control the sniffed systems.
I recommend only experienced users who know how to read system-logs to use this tool!

Features
  • sniffer works as a normal task from the shell
  • the results can be easy viewed with the analyzer

Planned Features
  • none

Usage
Installation
There are two scripts: One for Unix systems (and Cygwin I think) and another one for Linux. Copy the suiting one to the system you like. Open a shell window and start it.
Copy the "Crush Sniffer.exe" to a windows system or a wine directory in Linux and run it there.

Using the Application
After logging (can be stopped with ctrl-c) you have to copy the logs (all starting with RR...) to a windows computer or perhaps a Linux computer with wine and run the "Crush Sniffer.exe" - otherwise a mapped drive with network access should also work.
The program is in german - but it´s so easy to use I don´t see any reason to translate it.
"Nachrichtenfilter aktivieren" is automatically enabled and filters unnecessary lines from the results where nothing important happened.
The button "Dateien einlesen" Reads the files. You can select one of the RR... files. It´s not important which one.
Reading and filtering can take some time - so please be patient.
At the end you can see the 4 different logs. On clicking in a window all other logs will be corrected to the nearest time stamps to see what happend at this time with the other logs.
That´s all.

All settings are in the logger.sh file hard-coded. You have to change them by hand if necessary.
You can set the names of 3 different hosts. It should be easy to add more if you like.
Maximalcountage sets the days of logging. Older logs will be automatically deleted.
The _init-variables set the timeslice being used to update the different logs.
In the greps you can change the "*" parameter to a special to be controlled user if you like.

Uninstallation
Only delete the files and folder

Known Issues
The load-process takes a lot of time sometimes - depending on the size of your logs.

Please don´t ask for further support or development, because I decided to stop the development at this state.

Living Room / Re: I have a very hard announcement to make
« on: October 13, 2010, 03:45 AM »
App, thank you for all you´ve done for this community.
Your financial situation should always have the highest priority compared to time consuming projects like NANY. The fun on coding always depends on how excessive you spend time with it with a mind free of problems and sometimes everybody needs to take a break to not lose the interest completely. I had some pauses for up to several years from it - after this I recovered the fun with programming again and restarted all activities. I really wish you´ll get all fixed in your life and would be very happy to see you returning some day.

Living Room / Re: What's Your Internet Speed/Reliability SATISFACTION?

VDSL50

The speedtest differs a little bit from server to server, but the dl/ul-rate ist rather stable. The best ping was about 20ms till now.
I also have IPTV and think the settopbox reserves a lot of bandwith that can record 4 streams in parallel while watching a 5th.
A look into my modem-settings shows the maximum rates:
DSL Downstream: 51392 kBit/s
DSL Upstream:     10004 kBit/s
Perhaps it gets faster when I switch off the STB?

Can´t you set the position of the database file in locate to a network drive and use only one instance to update it? This should be no problem. (->Settings->Databases)

I also use 7zip. It´s source is open - the development´s still active (LZMA2 is now included!) and the features are great.

I bought it yesterday. It´s rather interesting - with some hard riddles. I also like the soundtrack. Thx for the link!

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Crush Sniffer
« on: July 03, 2010, 03:16 AM »
It sounds a bit strange, that´s right  ;). The Sniffer-program runs only via scripting in a Linux command console creating some logfiles with timestamps. I´m no Unix/Linux coder, so I did the analyzer as a windows program. Perhaps I´ll later try to use wxwidgets or something like this for the user interface. Otherwise, it should work fine with wine if needed. The analyzer is only a simple logfile-filter and synchronized viewer, looking for time overlap in the different log-windows correcting the views.
