... using the situation to tell about a giveaway from sharewareonsale and Webroot:
"Sale ends in 1 day 22½ hrs or until sold out": http://sharewareonsale.co...reanywhere-antivirus-sale

Is the program working via some virtual cloud? I don't know yet, I was so far just drawn by the timing and how lite it seems to be.

I am amazed. I had a strange feeling that it was not necessary to uninstall or even stop my antivirus, before installing WebRoot. Flashes from the past, security related programs freezing the computer when fighting to be the boss. But I took a d e e p breath, and installed the 798KB program. And I was right!! WebRoot is running at the same time as Microsoft Security Essentials, and they are not fighting each other (yet)! Maybe this shows that WebRoot not really is "here" (on my PC), but is working via some virtual cloud?

And Yes, it only took 5 minutes to install and set up.

Modified:
In order to register and get a free license, one must follow the "My Account" -button, and be both humble and patient. I am not, so I have not registered for a key. Example: After creating a password with AT LEAST NINE (9) characters, you are next ordered to:>Enter a memorable word or number, using a minimum of 6 characters (excluding < >). Choose a code that is easy to remember, because you'll be asked to enter two characters of it every time you log in. For example, the system might ask you to enter the first and fifth characters of this code.< And then you are told to also create a security question!!

Of course I did not accept all this, and have now removed the thing

77  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: PixiShot photo manager (from WebSite-Watcher author) on: April 13, 2015, 11:14:58 AM
In my square little mind it is important that the full name is: PixiShot - Photo Manager and Editor
-because I would never want a manager, but I do want an editor ;-) But will I want this at €35?  undecided

  • PixiShot is derived from: "pictures I shot" ⇒ "pics I shot" ⇒ "pix I shot" ⇒ PixiShot

A snippet from "Features" (http://www.pixishot.com/features.htm):

Quote
PixiShot is not the right tool for you...

    if you're looking for a RAW development tool. PixiShot can only edit JPG and 8bit TIF images. RAW files can however be displayed.

    if you're looking for a database solution where you can search all your images for certain tags. PixiShot doesn't use a database where all your images are stored. There's no need to import images into a database, just open a folder on your hard disk to view and work with your images.

    if you want to save your images with certain color profiles. PixiShot uses sRGB, images with other color profiles are converted to sRGB automatically.

I have seen, with my own eyes, systems get infected in real-time while the MSE system tray icon stayed green the entire time. Proceeding to then do an in-depth scan turning up *nothing* unusual all while browser windows are popping up on your screen stating your computer *may* be infected, dialogs for bogus Adobe Flash updates, etc.

-terrible!  ohmy  Thanks for warning.

So I chose to remove it all, lock, stock and barrel, and go back to MSE.
...
My desktop PC is currently "only" protected with Windows' inbuilt security: the firewall and Defender.

I am guessing your last claim maybe is the actual one; right now you're not using MSE, but Windows Firewall and Defender?  undecided

I am using MSE (and Windows Firewall), and I like it.

I'm doing even better than you Curt - using the portable version from 2011

-hehe, tomos. Now why risk anything, when the old one already is doing a good job?

-------------------------

Almost every day I will click "Print", and as I don't have a printer, this is "Print to pdf file". And because the print job was an article from the Internet, there is very often too much gibberish on the bottom part of the last page. Quite often so much that I want to be able to click "Delete page", when the viewer is on the last page.

However, Tracker's new FREE editor does not offer to delete pages from a pdf file:

[attachimg=1]

-but such a feature is the very reason I am using the PRO version of the old viewer:

[attachimg=2]

So, why I want to update? Maybe only because it now is more than 3 years old?  embarassed
So far I am sticking to the old PRO viewer!

86  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / So, what pdf reader app is your fav? on: April 09, 2015, 03:56:09 AM
Wanted: a lightweight pdf file viewer with a few editing features.

Quote from: New topic
So, what pdf reader app is your fav?

The said question would usually make me answer Tracker's Pdf-XChange Viewer Pro. The free version was a file viewer. The PRO version had a few editing features, but was basically the same file as the free version, and as such very, very fast.

I know that Sumatra is even faster - but my prime reason for sticking with Tracker is the PRO version's few, but useful, editing features.

However, ...

[attachimg=1]

 ...as hinted by the year-number to be seen in the photo, I have not updated my version for quite some time: 3 years!  Cry  "But, Curt", you may ask, "we know that you have spend an absolute fortune on software programs that you would only use a few times in your life, how come you suddenly seem to be trying to save money on a type of program that you are using many times a day?"

Well, Tracker grew this idea that the PRO version of their free PDF viewer was not as successful as could be, given how many people were using the free version, (I am guessing, of course they never said that out loud!), so they turned the PRO version of their pdf viewer into a full pdf editor. And a full editor is of course both slower and a lot more expensive, so I didn't upgrade,...

[attachimg=2]

 ... but began looking for a replacement. I still haven't found what I am  looking for. It seems to me that my 2012 PRO version of Tracker's viewer (including these few editor features) still is the best of the kind? Of course the 2014 version would be even better ~ because it's the same program, just updated for two more years ~ but it took the company so many years to introduce the new editor, that my license ran out long before, and their new prices are too high for what I am looking for. The price may of course be right for a full editor, but be it Lite or Heavy, I already have an even better editor, Nitro Pro. Unfortunately Nitro is very slow to launch,

so, a (cheap) ultra fast combo-app   like an updated Pdf-XChange Viewer Pro   is what I need. Do you know any?

And while you are here, please tell us what you are using yourself  tellme

One of the hours I spent today was stuff that was not even registering in the add-remove list, which I'm pretty fuzzy on how that happens.

-are you sure they were installed and not just unpacked? I know that I soon will have forgotten if I installed or merely unpacked a program. One way to have a clue is, if a proper folder has been created (by the program in question) in Start > All programs, or if you merely have a shortcut somewhere.

91  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: 'create Restore Point' question on: April 05, 2015, 02:38:01 AM
important information was missing on those linked, otherwise really useful, pages:

bit; your Windows is deleting restore points exactly as you were fearing. The good news is that time is not the determining factor, but space is. So it's not per week or so; if your drive has the space, you can easily make Windows keep more restore points. Remember that you can use an external drive for restore points (as well as for backups), so you don't have to get a new machine just yet.

Start > right-click "Computer" > Properties > System Protection > Configure... > Disk Space Usage

95  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Pale Moon: How to navigate w Home/End? on: April 01, 2015, 09:30:03 AM
In Danish the missing Mozilla line goes: "Brug altid markør og tastatur til at navigere på sider", so my private translation goes "for navigating pages, always use the marker and the keyboard". In English it is called Caret Browsing, and now I know that it is activated / deactivated by pressing [F7].

I wonder why Caret Browsing was default, and why the quoted line (from Firefox) not is in Pale Moon as well?
Well, problem solved, case closed.
96  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Solved: Pale Moon: How to navigate w Home/End? The answer: [F7] on: April 01, 2015, 02:58:06 AM
For 8 months I was forced to use Internet Explorer and Firefox 23, and thus forgot how to navigate the Internet pages, when using Pale Moon!  embarassed

In "a" Internet browser you can navigate the Internet pages by using your keyboard's Home, End. But not in Pale Moon! In my Pale Moon 25.3.1 (x86) these buttons will merely navigate the lines / objects, not the page: The cursor will move exactly as if you were typing a text in a message box; "Home" goes to the beginning of the same line, instead of to the top of the page!

Pale Moon doesn't have a (sorry, I don't remember the exact phrase right now) "Always navigate something ..keyboard.. something" -option.

I am on a laptop, so navigation is already difficult, and I need it to be as easy as possibly.

So, dear Pale Moon user, how did you overcome this problem?  tellme

Or is it just me?  smiley

Last August I lost my PC and was forced to take this old laptop into use. To my surprise it won't run Firefox, but only Internet Explorer! (...)

Today I am running all browser marques!
Q:
So, what was wrong?
A:
My NET Framework was broken!

Ehm... Internet browsers don't ask for NET Framework, in order to work? No, not as far as I know, they don't. Nevertheless, this is all I did to cure my laptop: I was looking in Revo Uninstaller Pro, and somehow managed to be aware that NET Framework was not listed. I knew that it was installed, so why wasn't it listed? I downloaded the newest version (4.5.2) and the installer asked if I wanted to remove or repair my Framework? - so obviously it was installed, as I thought it was - and therefore I clicked Repair: and Voilà! All sorts of Internet browsers are now running on my laptop!
