I am confused by the localisation; C:\dell\drivers... If all these drivers were Real Life today, they would be seen in _Installed Programs_ wouldn't they? They aren't.
I updated from Win 7. Windows Vista on this machine was at least 5 years ago. If the folder was almost empty, I wouldn't mind keeping it, but it takes up a full GIGAbytes! - and my old Solid State drive is only 119GB and has very little free space.

Can I safely delete this dell folder?  :tellme:

Protection test - March to July 2015:

2015-07-23_093508.png

Quite a surprise: The bests in this particular test were BitDefender, Kaspersky and Panda!  :o
Microsoft Security Essential was just as bad as TT_Vipre and Lavasoft.

However:
Once again Agnitum’s Outpost Security Suite, winner of several VB100 awards, was not part of the test.

AV testing: Is your antivirus app doing its job?
By Lincoln Spector on July 22, 2015 in Top Story

Using savvy security software is an important part of staying safe online. But just how effective is it? You can’t depend on your experience — or mine.

The best source for information on the competency of anti-malware apps comes from a handful of independent, virus-testing organizations. Here’s one example.

If asked, I can tell you the qualities of a word processor, photo editor, backup program, or other app; all I need to judge them is time, experience, and some hands-on testing. I can tell you whether a program is easy to use and discuss features both cool and pointless. But evaluating anti-malware apps is an entirely different game.

Sure, I could truthfully tell you that I’ve used Avira for five years without a single infection. But when it comes to security software, one person’s experience is meaningless. It’s like saying that smoking is safe because George Burns lived to be 99 — it’s an anecdote, not a statistic. It’s akin to trying to prove a negative; i.e., I haven’t been infected so it must be working (up until the day some hacker takes over your system).

Malware testing is not only difficult, it’s potentially dangerous. After all, it requires keeping and safely applying a massive collection of nasty viruses, Trojans, and so forth. That type of testing is beyond all but highly experienced security researchers.

Fortunately, there are organizations that are up to the task — and who are willing to publish their testing results to the public:
http://windowssecret...s-app-doing-its-job/
-WindowsSecrets.com

This read made me worry about my use of MSE => 90% is not much. When the upgrade to Win 10 is done, I really should reinstall Outpost!

Now go and read, and then come back and tell:

What AV-system do you use?   :tellme:  Did these test results made you reconsider?

Don't fix what is not broken. But Mozilla wants us all to have these signed versions, so I finally clicked "Update" in Firefox Addons, and right away felt a nervous knot in my stomach; oh, why didn't I abort the update at once?

My biggest problem is, that after the first five update procedures, I lost my patience and I updated some 32 extensions at the same time - yeah, I know, "always update addons one at a time", but there were too many still waiting - so now I don't know which addon was polluted. Is there a clever, fast way to find out? It's probably not a good idea to tell me to test this many one at a time...
 :tellme:

After re-launch a page popped up and said "Gratulations: You are the chosen one!" and gave me the option to answer 4 questions and then have a gift, which showed to be the chance to buy this&that for "before $120, right now $1". The link was for Firefox, but I was given the same offer when I visited the link via Internet Explorer and Chrome: http://consumernordi...cb8fd37c1fb31900064f > no virus, but seemingly fine offers you (most likely) should not take. The link goes to Denmark, are you being redirected elsewhere?

Modified:
I should of course point out that there have been no suspicious reactions whatsoever. Only the link to a "shop".

It has been a mystery to me since long ago: Everybody likes when screenshots include the magnifying glass zoom effect, it is good looking and makes things easier to understand - and yet the feature is not available in any screnshot application for Windows! How can this be? Or do you know one, please? Not even mouser's Screenshot Captor seems to offer this feature!

You are of course already aware, that I am not talking about any magnifying, crosshair selection tool, or magnifying areas in general. And I am not searching for something to be operated with two spreading fingers on the microscopic monitor on a tiny smart phone either, but a program for my desk/lap-top. I am not asking how to magnify, but what application can EASILY create a screenshot like this:

text-in-magnifying-glass.jpg

Please don't tell me about various manuals for doing it myself; I want my screenshot capture program to easily do it for me!!

I am not looking for this GIMP style:

16.jpg

-besides looking wrong, it takes half an eternity to create.

No, this is the kind of result I am looking for:

Magnifying-Glass-Old-l.jpg

Does such a feature exist in any screenshot capture application for Windows? Please, surprise me!  :tellme:

Normally, programs like Unlocker, IObit Unlocker, LockHunter, etcetera, can delete an empty file. Unfortunately, this time they can't.

Maybe the problem is that one of the tricks I've tried to use, was to click "rename and delete". I now #imagine# that this was a really wrong thing to do, because how can you rename a file that isn't there? No, you can't! So now there is a key in the registry or something, saying that this file (that doesn't exist) should be renamed, and therefore no-one can touch it until the renaming (that cannot happen because the file really isn't there) has been done!?? So Windows is waiting for the renaming to happen, but it cannot happen. Is this it? Is that why it has been impossible for me, to delete this piece of nothing?

I have rebooted (several times) and everything. Not being able to rename, includes not being able to add extension.

Is there a place where I can cancel the renaming job (if that is a problem at all)?  :tellme:

Living Room / HTTPS exploit ready to terrorise
« on: May 22, 2015, 07:15 AM »
Normally I will would just leave an extended title and a link, but this article is too important & too sad, to risk being unnoticed:

I don't know if this is old news, but I think it certainly is bad news:

HTTPS exploit ready to terrorise thousands of websites and mail servers
By Jamie Hinks http://www.techradar...mail-servers-1294458

Diffie-Hellman downgrade weakness allows hackers in.

Almost 100,000 HTTPS websites are under threat from a new vulnerability born out of attempts by the US in the early 1990s to break the encryption used by foreign entities.

First reported by Ars Technica, the 'Logjam' vulnerability affects 8.4% of the world's top one million websites in addition to a slightly higher percentage of the mail servers in the IPv4 address space, according to researchers.

"Logjam shows us once again why it's a terrible idea to deliberately weaken cryptography, as the FBI and some in law enforcement are now calling for," J. Alex Halderman, one of the scientists behind the research, told Ars Technica in an email. "That's exactly what the US did in the 1990s with crypto export restrictions, and today that backdoor is wide open, threatening the security of a large part of the web."

The exploit lets eavesdroppers view data passing over encrypted connections and then modify it to successfully perform man-in-the-middle attacks. It is born out of a flaw in the transport layer security (TLS) protocol that allows websites and mail servers to set up encrypted connections with end users, and the Diffie-Hellman key exchange is where the weakness lies.

Attackers are using Logjam to take advantage of a subset of servers supporting Diffie-Hellman, which allows two parties that have never met to set up a special key even if they are communicating over an unsecured connection.

To take advantage of vulnerable connections, attackers have to use the number sieve algorithm to precompute data. After doing that they can successfully perform man-in-the-middle attacks against the same vulnerable connection.

Keep your browser updated
Only Internet Explorer has been updated to protect against the exploit, although the researchers have been in touch with the developers of Chrome, Firefox and Safari to ensure that a fix will be implemented that rejects encrypted connections under a minimum of 1024 bits.

Researchers are advising server administrators to switch off support for the DHE_EXPORT ciphersuites that permit Diffie-Hellman connections to be downgraded and they have even provided a guide on how to do so securely. For end users, make sure your browser or email client is kept completely up-to-date with the very latest version.

Once again I want to throw something or even someone out the window. Because I live on the 7'th floor, this is usually not a good idea. So instead I beat the keyboard...:

I got the same email many of you also got today from Gizmo's Freeware a.k.a. TechSupportAlert, recommending a new article entitled "The Best List of Free Windows Security Software on the Web" ((formerly known as Probably the Best Free Security List in the World.))

Wow, what a title; I simply had to follow that link! So I clicked the http://..., (no s in http) but Firefox replaced the page with this error message "Content Encoding Error. The page can not be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. Please contact the owners of the site around this problem.".

I have met this problem before, so I peacefully took a deep breath (in order to keep my monitor inside the apartment), and right-clicked the link to open in Internet Explorer 11, which had no problem opening the page. IE can also show the s version: https://..., but my Firefox will at best display a very crippled version, sometimes nothing.
What about your browser?  :tellme:

I like both Gizmo and Firefox, but I am truly disappointed:
  • What good is a browser that won't browse, a page that will not load, a list that will not list?

I actually came here to say that there is this list, and it is a really interesting read

Judy's TenKey

There are all sorts of surprises. Some of them came via this little calculator of Judy's. I didn't know about it until it was offered to me for free, normal price $20, but it has been on the market for several years! Yet when I happened to stumble upon it and think this is finally a calculator to my liking, it seems to be abandoned! I don''t #know# if the entire company is dead and gone, but at least the link to support is dead. This is really sad, I think, because in my mind that Ziff Davis award was well deserved.

This is merely a twenty dollar program, for free, so I don't bother to tell a lot more. Go to: http://www.windowsde...iscount-coupon-code/ (or maybe http://www.judysapps...nKey_WindowsDeal.htm ?), and read for yourself. The list of features is long, even though this calculator also can be easy to use: http://www.judysapps.com/TK_Features.htm. But you will need to sign up at WindowsDeal. I did that a few weeks ago, and I have not been spammed.

General Software Discussion / So, what pdf reader app is your fav?
« on: April 09, 2015, 03:56 AM »
Wanted: a lightweight pdf file viewer with a few editing features.

So, what pdf reader app is your fav?
-New topic

The said question would usually make me answer Tracker's Pdf-XChange Viewer Pro. The free version was a file viewer. The PRO version had a few editing features, but was basically the same file as the free version, and as such very, very fast.

I know that Sumatra is even faster - but my prime reason for sticking with Tracker is the PRO version's few, but useful, editing features.

However, ...

2015-04-09_091007.gif

...as hinted by the year-number to be seen in the photo, I have not updated my version for quite some time: 3 years!  :'(  "But, Curt", you may ask, "we know that you have spend an absolute fortune on software programs that you would only use a few times in your life, how come you suddenly seem to be trying to save money on a type of program that you are using many times a day?"

Well, Tracker grew this idea that the PRO version of their free PDF viewer was not as successful as could be, given how many people were using the free version, (I am guessing, of course they never said that out loud!), so they turned the PRO version of their pdf viewer into a full pdf editor. And a full editor is of course both slower and a lot more expensive, so I didn't upgrade,...

2015-0.gif

... but began looking for a replacement. I still haven't found what I am  looking for. It seems to me that my 2012 PRO version of Tracker's viewer (including these few editor features) still is the best of the kind? Of course the 2014 version would be even better ~ because it's the same program, just updated for two more years ~ but it took the company so many years to introduce the new editor, that my license ran out long before, and their new prices are too high for what I am looking for. The price may of course be right for a full editor, but be it Lite or Heavy, I already have an even better editor, Nitro Pro. Unfortunately Nitro is very slow to launch,

so, a (cheap) ultra fast combo-app   like an updated Pdf-XChange Viewer Pro   is what I need. Do you know any?

And while you are here, please tell us what you are using yourself  :tellme:

For 8 months I was forced to use Internet Explorer and Firefox 23, and thus forgot how to navigate the Internet pages, when using Pale Moon!  :-[

In "a" Internet browser you can navigate the Internet pages by using your keyboard's Home, End. But not in Pale Moon! In my Pale Moon 25.3.1 (x86) these buttons will merely navigate the lines / objects, not the page: The cursor will move exactly as if you were typing a text in a message box; "Home" goes to the beginning of the same line, instead of to the top of the page!

Pale Moon doesn't have a (sorry, I don't remember the exact phrase right now) "Always navigate something ..keyboard.. something" -option.

I am on a laptop, so navigation is already difficult, and I need it to be as easy as possibly.

So, dear Pale Moon user, how did you overcome this problem?  :tellme:

Or is it just me?  :)

General Software Discussion / No more Filehippo for me
« on: March 06, 2015, 11:51 AM »
It is difficult for me to describe just how disappointed I am with Filehippo and SUPER/eRightSoft.

We knew that the eRightSoft homepage author was a blithering idiot, because he made it impossible for visitors to find where to download the company's product: SUPER. But that was why Filehippo was (not is) the place to go, if you wanted to download the otherwise fine SUPER converter. On Filehippo it is easy to find where to download SUPER, so that's where we went.

And as usual Filehippo would supply a clean file, wouldn't they.
No, they won't! They would, but they won't!!

I want to tell you the story, but I need to say upfront that Opera was installed without my acceptance!  :o

Of course I was soon aware that this has become adware:

2015-03-06_170708.gif

"Okay, I know how to unselect", I thought, and went on installing.

Notice, there is no [X] (no red Exit -button), but "Close" is spelled & greyed out
and moved to the lower left corner, (where "Close" never is situated in Windows)
and normal installation is now custom installation for experts only,

also, this picture is misleading, because all extra programs were pre-selected by default
(before I realized I needed to take some screenshots):

2015-03-06_170754.gif

^ Did you notice that Opera will "be SUGGESTED"

--------

These warnings came during installation, when I unselected the extra offers:
"You removed a program. This will affect your computer. Abort?"
What would you click here? The answer is not OK...

affect.gif

My PC might not be infected, it is infected! (Yes, by this application!)

2015-03-06_182236.gif

2015-03-06_171559.gif

^ This Uniblue program is called "Speed Up", so I tried to be speedy, but I was too slow:
Even though I clicked Decline
(can you even find the "Decline" -button?)
half of Speed Up  and all of Opera  were installed!!!

This was too much for me; it is not acceptable behaviour, even from greedy, blithering idiots.

In my old-fashioned mind Filehippo should be above this. But on the contrary, Filehippo is the central part of it.
No more Filehippo for me!

General Software Discussion / CLOX: All The Time in the World
« on: March 01, 2015, 06:39 PM »
eh... was it maybe ten years ago I last heard of Mirage Audio Visual Media and their ("his"?) CLOX? The prices range between $6 and $10, so I probably have a license from many years ago ("Registered users of CLOX from versions 1 to 7 and CLOX 2000 can get CLOX 8 free of charge"!!), I can't recall; my backup is not old enough!

Anyway; after a decade in silence, the company has now launched a new version: CLOX 8
http://mirage-avm.com/mu/clox.htm

All The Time in the World
CLOX is an easy to use world clock app giving both desktop and mobile users analog and digital clocks showing the time in different world time zones

Clox Anywhere

Whilst being a little different from previous versions of CLOX, version 8 continues to provide users with an exceptionally high quality software product at a bargain price. What's more, CLOX is no longer tied to the desktop. The new mobile versions are virtually identical in every way to the new desktop version.

These screen shots were taken from CLOX 8 for Windows but they could just as well be from a small-screen (320x480) mobile phone. The new design means that CLOX 8 will work beautifully on any popular screen type from the smallest smartphones and tablets upwards.

The examples here show just a tiny selection of the countless possible ways to set up CLOX. You can see a few more screenshots here. CLOX 8 can display up to 12 time zones and including up to 10 analog clocks at a time.
CLOX 8 is currently available for Windows 7 & 8, Android 4.4 & 5 and Windows Phone 8. Shop: http://www.mirage-avm.com/store/cart/

Customers are advised to download and try products before purchasing, as refunds are not normally available, once registration codes have been issued.

In my mind, the accompanying animation is not really doing the program a favour:

General Software Discussion / Solved: Why won't my laptop run Firefox?
« on: February 25, 2015, 06:00 PM »
Last August I lost my PC and was forced to take this old laptop into use. To my surprise it won't run Firefox, but only Internet Explorer! This is of course not some management restriction, but merely my real life experience; the Mozilla browser will launch but never go anywhere or open any homepage. Or it will launch, but everything takes longer than forever. And I mean several minutes to (not) open a page. Even with low safety settings and without any safety related program being open! SOMETIMES Firefox will open some pages, or simple pages, but not flash or complex pages - but most times it won't go anywhere at all!

Understand that my test results are sparse because I lose patience long before any homepage connection was made.

***Each and every other program that I have installed will connect to the Internet without a problem***

I have not been able to find any security related setting from the previous owner anywhere.
Computer, drivers, flash and everything are fully updated, so to speak; the laptop seems to be from 2009...

It has now been half a year and I have no more ideas about where to go or what to do, except asking YOU!  :tellme:

---------------------------------------
5 years ago the laptop was above average:
Dell Latitude Z600, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU U9600 @ 1.60GHz, Data Width 64 Bits, Caption x64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10 Family 191 Level 6 Stepping , Current Clock Speed 1601 MHZ , Ext Clock 200 MHZ , L2 Cache Size 3072 KB - Memory Device 0 and Memory Device 1 Size 4095 MB
Win 7 Home Premium 32-bits (year 2010 upgraded from Vista).
