General Software Discussion / Re: Does DoCo have a "How To" Section?
« on: February 22, 2011, 04:34 PM »
Ok! I'll have a go at a simple how-to in the hope of inspiring a few other, more competent, members  :-*
Euhm, you could start a new thread for each HowTo* describing the intended HowTo*, and add/update with any contributions, as in posts from other users, to your original message to build a complete as possible first thead-message, holding the entire HowTo*, eventually.
It would ofcourse be nice to name any contributes, but much less distracting if the additional posts would initially be hidden, until a 'Reveal all comments' button was pressed, just like a spoiler button in a single message.

*) HowTo's and Mini-reviews should be handled equally, IMHO, just use the correct title-prefix

If mouser made a shiny new section for that, you could write a few for the March fundraiser

Me too ;D

If only all of those 233,795 members would make a $1.- donation next month... :-*

3332
is to reach these other people by showing them that we create useful content that they benefit from, and by having other people spread the word about the useful content we create.

That means we can expect a special (single-subject?) newsletter this week then? That's the most effective way to let all members know we've got something special in mind for the whole of march.

Come to think of that, maybe we'd have to pledge for a monthly newsletter again, I missed a few episodes...

3333
Well, yes. Otherwise what does happen? If everything goes ahead anyway, where's the incentive for anyone to a) step up to pledge and b) put up some dough?
As an alternative to adapting the donation credit system, the pledgees could withhold the 'final delivery' of their goodies, until they receive a certain amount of donations, they then turn over to the site, and release the stuff?

3334
- I assumed it was more like a fundraiser where you got sponsorship or something.
That would be a nice feature, but does the donation credit system support that? Only if a level of sponsorship (set by the pledgee I presume) is reached, the CSnack download will be available/Tim's drawing will be sent/Reviews are fully revealed (all of the pledges I can recall from memory) etc? Possibly showing the amount/percentage still left to be donated. Hm, sounds like I'm chasing mouser to work, dunno if that's allowed :-[

3335
... just get enough lined up so we can announce all the stuff we are doing for march ...
Just appoint me a non-Wednesday date and I'll post as pledged 8)

The awaiting second (and further?) pledge(s) is/are still in the clouds, haven't made up my mind yet

What's a contrabassoon?
He wanted to play soon, rather than late, that's why the "discussion" took place

3337
but does anyone know what was wrong with the intermediate bass.dlls?
They (development team) screwed something up. What's not clear yet? For more details you'll probably need the VCS logs or the original dev audio-recordings when they fixed it...

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to capture window client area
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:22 AM »
Well, on a lot of applications I can't get it to grab just the client area.
I can grab the separate controls like toolbars, listviews etc., and ofcourse the entire window, but not the complete area inside the window-border. AFAICS, that's what LasseT is asking for.

I'd try 'Grab windows Object or Scrolling window (<your hotkey>)' to select the object you want, and press Ctrl-Primary-mouseClick to grab that. Depending on the type of Windows form/control it is or isn't able to select the object you want...

« on: February 21, 2011, 03:11 AM »
does not respond to custom Trout hotkeys when an AHK script sends the hotkeys (at least not for me ...)!
Are you sending the hotkeys to the right window/exe? or is this about global hotkeys? In the latter case it's probably that your 'secondary' AHK script-engine is re-grabbing the global hotkey chain, interrupting the original setup of Trout.

Living Room / Re: SATA III - why no better rating than SATA II ?
« on: February 20, 2011, 06:07 AM »
Still don't really understand why SATA III drives on a SATA III interface don't see an improvement in system rating ???
That system rating actually measures the data transfer speed. As your SATA II interface already offers enough throughput to deliver the full potential of your disk, SATA III isn't needed, nor does it improve, the transferspeed to & from the disk.
You need a faster disk (or one with a higher burst-transfer, achievable by a big on-disk cache, but the system-rating probably has counter-measures to avoid falling into that trap) to require the need (and see any improvement) of a SATA III interface.

IMHO the desktop is just 1 location (folder) for each user, plus 1 location system-wide ('All Users' desktop folder) that are merged into the view that you have on your screens. Just the coordinates of the short-cut-icon determines where it is 'located'.
AFAIK, new icons can't be easily 'steered' into a specific position. Windows just picks the first available position (top to bottom, left to right on LTR (left to right writing) Windows) on the main desktop.

Workaround:
  • Create folders on your desktop for each monitor you have (DL-Screen-left, DL-Screen-middle, DL-Screen-right)
  • Drag each folder to the corresponding monitor
  • Download any file into the correct folder, your initial download location should be 'Desktop', so you can browse easily into the right sub-folder
To make the last item easier, you could use separate browser-brands on each monitor (IE, FF, Chrome, Opera), but you'd have a bit of trouble keeping favorites synched.

I'd suggest to only pursue this request at your new thread in the Coding Snacks section, over here. That's the best place for it.

General Software Discussion / Re: DVCS ?
« on: February 19, 2011, 02:59 PM »
... But since I have perfectionist tendencies...
With that said: Do get some kind of VCS!

If working alone or in a small local team (in the same office): Get SVN, it's easy to set up (locally) and very well documented.
If working in a geographically 'wide area' or a large group of people, get GIT or Mercurial and a hosted central server, or create a project at SourceForge with SVN if somebody really wants that to be used.

Or a (small) donation to the person that helped you out so nicely :-[

Living Room / Re: USB 3.0 stick - anyone taken the plunge?
« on: February 17, 2011, 06:22 PM »
It came formatted Fat32.
Bummer :o But that's not something you can't easily fix.

If I'd need another thumb-drive I'd probably get one of those too, even without the LED indicator.
And I think it looks decent as well.

Thanks for the mini-mini-review.

General Software Discussion / Re: how to make every app portable?
« on: February 17, 2011, 03:25 PM »
Isn't that just a collection of apps that happen to be portable?
Yep, but there's a quite huge collection already. Most likely all the OP needs is there :D
I think the only true way to take your setup with you would be as a complete virtual PC running in virtualbox or similar.
That would have 2 disadvantages:
  • You'd need a quite big USB drive
  • You still have to install the virtualization platform before you can do anything
