I never knew until now that Dropbox has their own wiki.  Of particular note are the Tips and Tricks with Dropbox and the Dropbox Add-ons.  Good stuff!  Some of the links are to other online resources, but a lot of it is home-grown, which is quite impressive!

General Software Discussion / Review of 7 Cloud Storage Services
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:36 AM »
Considering I just did a review of SugarSync vs. Dropbox, I thought this review on Tom's very timely-

http://www.tomsguide...ing,review-1539.html

There's actually no overlap with my review, as the author reviews:
  • Box.net
  • Carbonite
  • Google
  • i365 EVault SaaS
  • MediaFire Pro
  • Microsoft Live Mesh
  • Microsoft SkyDrive

For the short synopsis, it appears that they don't really favor any above the other.  I tried mesh for my purposes, but it's not accessible from work which immediately voided that option for me.

Intro:

With so many things moving to the cloud, and so many having more than one digital device, it becomes an issue to keep everything in sync, and to have access to everything when you need it.  Trying to satisfy these requirements are several cloud-based continuous backup services.  I became aware of Dropbox back when it was in beta, and was able to score an invite.  From the moment I did, I was hooked.  It became very much a part of my computing experience, and I was always looking for new ways to use it.  But for all of that, I never saw a reason to pay for it, figuring that I could keep the documents that I needed within the 2GB limit.  This became a bit harder when I purchased my iPhone, using DropBox as a way to supplement my storage on the device through their iPhone app.  One day I was listening to the AppSlappy podcast, and they reviewed SugarSync as an alternative to MobleMe.  I was intrigued, especially since SugarSync also had a free version.  So I tried it.  During my trial of SugarSync, I began to see DropBox in a new light.  SugarSync had many more features.  But when I started to really implement it, I began to see that it was give and take, so decided to write this comparative review.

Who is this app designed for:

Both of these apps are designed for the mobile user that utilizes more than one device in differing locations, and also wants to access vital documents on the go.  They seamlessly back up any information not only to the provider's servers, but to all interlinked computers.  I suppose you could also use it for a backup scheme, but I don't think I'd recommend it as your primary backup- more as an auxiliary to whatever backup scheme you choose.  The interesting thing that is a useful feature of both is that deleted files and versions of files can also be archived, so you can use this is a rudimentary versioning system for your documents.

The Good
Dropbox is pretty much an install and forget type of application.  There's nothing to configure, other than the location of the Dropbox if you don't want it to be in the default location.  Dropbox also has an option for LAN sync, which lets it sync much faster if the computers are on the same LAN by copying directly rather than up to the server then back down to the other computer.  There's no desktop interface to be concerned with, and the web interface is minimal, and functional.  You can also designate certain folders as shared, and create automatic photo galleries by sharing folders with photos.

DropboxWebInterface.png

The iPhone interface is also pretty minimal, and common file types are viewable from within the dropbox interface.

Sugarsync has an install and forget mode, where you use the magic briefcase only.  That folder is automatically synced between the computers that have the software installed.  SugarSync also has the ability to sync arbitrary folders that are not in the magic briefcase folder, and even more, to set up sync profiles, so that your work files are only synced to your work computers and your personal files are only synced to your personal computers.

SugarSyncDesktopInterface02.png

Because of this, computers are recognized by SugarSync, even in the web interface, and the files that are available on each computer are displayed.

SugarSyncWebInterface01.png

As with DropBox, you can share folders and photo albums, but you can also get links that expire to send to those that you want to have temporary access to a certain files.  The expiration of the link is very welcome, so you don't have to be concerned with what links are still out there, and whether files are secure over time.  You can also send the file itself.  The status of each of your files is also available, and a transfer queue is available while files are being downloaded or uploaded, so you can see what operations SugarSync is performing.

The iPhone interface is a bit more detailed than the DropBox interface, and allows you to share specific documents by links just as with the desktop interface.

The needs improvement section
DropBox is simple, and it works.  There aren't any real pitfalls with the service as is.  It is just not as full featured as the other service reviewed here.

SugarSync does have a few minor issues.  The manner of moving the magic briefcase folder isn't as intuitive as it is with DropBox.  Once you know how to move the briefcase- by cutting and pasting the folder- it is actually easier than DropBox.  But I had to search to find that information; it is not included in the documentation.  The free client has a serious limitation that I was unaware of, and that you are not openly briefed about when using it; that is, it can only sync between two desktops.  The mobile clients are not considered for this purpose, but this is a limitation that should be openly disclosed considering the fact that DropBox allows you to sync between multiple clients.

Why I think you should use this product

If you are able to place everything that you need in a single folder, and don't mind that it syncs everything across every computer that you install it on, and 2GB is good enough for you, dropbox is definitely for you.  It's a lot simpler in its approach, and if you don't need the advanced functionality, it's basically install it and go.

If you are looking for a free alternative, and don't have more than 2 computers to sync, then give SugarSync a look.  It's definitely more full featured, and the abilities it gives you to sync different folders to different computers, and to sync any folder are very powerful.  I also like the fact that you can send out expiring links; it's one of my favorite features!

As far as paid alternatives go, I definitely think that SugarSync has the edge.  The plans are comparable in space, but SugarSync costs less across the board.  Add to that the fact that they have a $4.99 plan and DropBox does not, and they are the choice to beat.

How does it compare to similar apps

From http://www.sugarsync...sync_comparison.html

SugarSyncComparison.png

Even though this is from SugarSync.com, doing a quick run-through of the represented services, this seems like a decently objective view of the services.

http://technologykil...ropbox-vs-sugarsync/
http://www.wordinpro...ugarsync-vs-dropbox/

Conclusions

Both products are slick and fill an area that becomes quickly a need instead of a nice to have when you start really using them.  The difference is the implementation.  As a free service, I'd give dropbox a 4.5 out of 5, and SugarSync a 4 out of 5.  As a paid service, those ratings flip flop.  But in either case, you can't go wrong trying them.  I recommend Dropbox whole heartedly- I've been using it for over a year with no problems.  The problems that I've had just in the little while that I've had SugarSync as a paid service and started trying to use it make me not be able to recommend it, no matter what the features are.

UPDATE: Added a couple of other comparative reviews.

General Software Discussion / 10 Things to Avoid in Social Media
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:25 PM »
A very good article on adoption of Social Media (via Web Worker Daily)

When I listen to people get all excited about social media as if it were some newfangled discovery, I keep wanting to say “It’s just online community. We’ve had that for over 20 years now. We’re just getting it via new applications with more integrated features. But it’s community!” Friends, fans and followers? We used to call them community members or our online friends.

Despite having been in this same place before, I have to admit I’m still excited about the possibilities. My concern is where things could be headed if we’re not smart about how we use the new tools at our disposal — we could end up repeating many of the mistakes made during the Web 1.0 years. With that in mind, here are my ten things to avoid in social media:

Living Room / Responsibility in Web Services
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:00 PM »
There is a web service called Please Rob Me (at predictably enough http://pleaserobme.com) that takes location based social networks and streams all of the locations that people are at when they aren't at home (hence the name).  They say that their intent is not that people get robbed- but what if a robber does use the service?  Does a simple non-intent statement get them off the hook?  Admittedly broadcasting your location is a bit silly (I don't even broadcast my name and such), but to aggregate all of that information with a convenient search by username and location seems a bit much...

From MaximumPC

When you get right down to it, Dropbox is a pretty simple app. It syncs folders—that’s it. But what makes Dropbox amazing is the sheer number of different ways you can use that functionality, by itself or in conjunction with other programs, to improve your computing experience. We like Dropbox so much that we’ve written about it several  times  before, and we still haven’t gotten to every cool thing you can do with the program.

That’s why, in this article, we’re going to share with you a whopping 15 things that we think everyone should know about Dropbox, from how to get extra storage for free to how to use Dropbox to control your Bittorrent client.

Developer's Corner / AHK Help
« on: January 21, 2010, 01:04 PM »
I need a little utility program to automate use of some third party software, so I thought this was the perfect time to learn a little AutoHotKey.  But, I'm running into a bit of a problem.  Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong with the following snippet?  Using the latest AHK downloaded from the AHK site.

Code: AutoIt [Select]
  1. ; Variables
  2. _InputDirectory := "\\snlwebtool3\apps\TranslationRepository_test\"
  3. _OutputDirectory := "\\snlwebtool3\apps\TranslationRepository\Incoming"
  4. _PDFConverterPath := ProgramFiles . "\AnyBizSoft\PDFConverter\PDFConverter.exe"
  5.
  6. ; Script Start
  7. FileSelectFile % _SourceFileName, 3, _InputDirectory, "Select the file to be converted.", "Adobe PDF (*.pdf)"

I get the following error:
C:\Dev\.NET20\Document System\SNL.DocumentTranslationService\Scripts\PDFConverter.ahk (21) : ==> This parameter contains a variable name missing its ending percent sign.
     Specifically: % _SourceFileName

It works if I take the % out, but then it's not using the values of the variables, but the variable names.

Thoughts?

Description
I don't know if anyone else has gotten involved in the penny auction craze, but I have- especially on Swoopo.  I've purchased things for insane prices- even given the price of the bids!  One problem I had was keeping track of several auctions at once.  That's what this program does!

Features
SwoopoSpy lets you add an auction to a spy pane, and keep all of your auctions in front of you in one window.  A pretty simple application once you get down to it.

Planned Features
Because I just started a new job, and just moved interstate, I didn't get to implement all of the features that I had planned- I barely got this done on time!  But there are several other features that I want to implement, including:
  • Auction Type (penny, .02, etc)
  • Visual notification of time going to less than a minute.
  • Visual notification of custom events, i.e. auction becoming closed, price hitting a certain point
  • Notification of the number of bids you've used
  • Notification of profit margin
  • E-mail, text balloon, and/or audio notification when a certain threshold is reached
  • The ability to minimize to the tray notification area

Screencast

Screenshots

Usage
Installation
Make sure you have .NET 3.5 and IE installed.  Extract the files to a folder and run it.

Using the Application
Go to Swoopo in your favorite browser.  Find the auction that you want to follow.  Copy the URL and paste it into SwoopoSpy, and click add.  Profit!

Note that auctions take a while to load because of error checking that the program does against the URL.  If you want to speed up loading auctions, you can un-check the "Check URLs" setting in the status bar.  A lot of error checking is done before time, so your results if you enter an incorrect URL may crash the program...

Uninstallation
Delete the folder that you extracted the files to.

Known Issues
Behind proxies (at work for instance) there are sometimes script errors when loading the auction.  You can safely ok these.  I'm not sure why proxies make the page load differently in the WebBrowser control. (If someone has an inkling, I'd appreciate the tip!)

Developer's Corner / Virus targets Borland Delphi
« on: August 23, 2009, 07:50 AM »
This is something I've not seen before- A virus targeting developers.  Win32/Induc targets Borland Delphi, infecting the IDE so that when you build an application with it, the virus is included in the built .EXE.  The virus has no payload, but it does create a virus nightmare for developers.  I found out about it because GMailKeeper sent out a warning that it carried the virus.

Dear Customers,

This email is here to inform you that you must update your copy of
Gmail Keeper. A old version of Gmail Keeper was infected by a low
risk virus called Win32/Induc A which attaches machines with a
software development tool called Delphi.

Although the infected version of Gmail Keeper can do no harm to your
computer unless you have Borland Delphi V4-7 installed, you are
highly recommended to download the latest clean version of Gmail
Keeper from our Server.

Download Link: http://gmailkeeper.c...oad-full-version.php
User name: <redacted>

Password: <redacted>

Note: You'll still need your license key in order to use the full
version of Gmail Keeper.

Details about the low risk virus can be found here
<http://gmailkeeper.com/download-full-version.php>
.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Best Regards,

Gmail Keeper Team

http://GmailKeeper.com

I then looked the virus up, and found more information:

http://www.scmagazin...lphi/article/146957/

http://www.bitdefend...--Win32.Induc.A.html

The second is a particularly good read, because it tells how to detect if you have it without running an AV scan.  Note also that this only affects Delphi 4-7.

General Software Discussion / Tabbles on BDJ on Wednesday
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:10 PM »
Tabbles is up on Bits Du Jour on Wednesday, and I was really excited about it, so decided to download it to see if it would fit the needs of a Virtual File System.  I'm sad to report that it didn't.  I didn't go into it enough to give a justified mini-review, so I'm just posting this short synopsis.

Tabbles is touted as a personal document management system that allows you to organize your files via visible tags.  While it has a lot of functionality, usability was dropped way off the radar.  When you open the program, you're presented with this full screen view of a folder that contains a visual browser for your file system, a folder with a sample tabble, and a few other folders.  First a bit about tabbles (the object, not the program).  Tabbles are these circular objects that are containers for folders, documents, or pretty much anything on your file system or in the cloud.  You can tag them, have them in more than one place (without duplicating the content), combine them (so that you open a group at once or manipulate a group at once) or, of course, open them.  It's a pretty interesting concept, and one that I was looking forward to trying out.  But the view of your tabbles is always this huge graphical bit- there's no details view or anything like that.  It's like only having variations of the icon view in explorer with all of the drawbacks thereof (only having a label, needing a huge amount of space, etc).  It is also very tied to having some other sort of file explorer to organize your files, at least originally- so imagine needing all of this room to see your tabbles, then having to have an explorer window up in addition- it turned me off pretty fast.

This impression was obtained over about an hour of messing around with it, and wanting it to be what I was looking for.  It was also after 3 days of trying to get it installed (I had a few problems trying to get the installer, then with crashes in the actual application and obtaining updates).

In short, it's very pretty, and seems to have a whole lot to offer in terms of the visual tagging, and relationship of documents.  But the viewing, organization, and manipulation of the documents really put me off.

Caveat: I've never gotten into the mind-mapping thing much, and this seems a lot like this for documents.  If you're interested, I'd still say take a look.  The developers have been really responsive.  But if I hadn't had a chance to try it, I would have probably bought it thinking it was something else, and wanted to save anyone else that frustration.

Addition: To be complete, the normal price is $59.99, but on Bits tomorrow, the price will be $24.60 which is 59% off.  According to a representative from Yellow blue soft, they only offer a per-computer license, i.e. if you want it on your laptop and desktop, or at work and at home, you have to get two licenses.  They also address the explorer open at the same time problem- they will be looking into integrating it with explorer at a later date.

Living Room / Interesting Development on GOG.com
« on: July 30, 2009, 11:08 AM »
GOG.com (Good Old Games) is a Polish company that specializes in bringing DRM-free games to consumers cheaply in a digital format.  A couple of quotes from their site:

Everyone at GOG.com is a gamer, just like you. We’ve combined our real-life love for classic games with the amazing virtual world of the internet to bring some of our favorite games to your PC, with nothing – except maybe our budget – holding us back from conquering the world through gaming.

Don't let your DRMs turn into nightmares (clever, no?). You won't find any intrusive copy protection in our games; we hate draconian DRM schemes just as much as you do, so at GOG.com you don't just buy the game, you actually own it. Once you download a game, you can install it on any PC and re-download it whenever you want, as many times as you need, and you can play it without an internet connection.

Their prices range from $5.99 to $9.99 and they have regular sales that drop their prices from 10% to 50% on select games.  I love the site, and have bought several games.  But now the problem with digital distribution rears it's ugly head...

I bought TOCA Race Driver 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 from them with the full knowledge that Codemasters was removing the titles from the GOG.com store, but had been re-assured that the games would remain downloadable to those that had bought them before the sunset date.  Then I get the following e-mail this morning...

Dear GOG.com Customer,

Thank you for purchasing TOCA Race Driver 3 and/or Colin McRae Rally 2005 from GOG.com.

As we announced on GOG.com, TOCA Race Driver 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 had to be removed from our games catalogue as per our licensing agreement with Codemasters. Due to some expiring licenses within the games, Codemasters is obliged to withdraw copies of TOCA Race Driver 3 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 from all sales outlets within a certain time period, which includes GOG.com and its servers.

This means that the games won't be available to re-download from your GOG.com account as of August 29th 2009 (TOCA Race Driver 3) and October 29th 2009 (Colin McRae Rally 2005). We know it would be ideal for these games to be available for re-download forever and we're working on this, however we kindly ask you to download the games and back them up on CDs, DVDs or flash drives.

Sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

GOG.com Team

Would I have bought them if I had known? Probably. I mean, I can still back them up and install them whenever. But one of the reasons I bought into this whole digital distribution thing was the idea that I didn't *have* to keep backups- that I could just re-download ithe games whenever and/or wherever. This feels like a great big change in the digital download arena... and to a certain extent I feel... betrayed. I know it's not GOG.com's fault... and at least they aren't taking the kindle approach and deleting something after the fact. But still, it's a change from what I expected, and those expectations were not my own, but expectations that were fostered by ALL of the digital download sites. And what about the ones with DRM? If I had bought either of these two games from Steam... where would I be now?

It seems like a slippery slope... I thought the games industry had at least learned a bit from the fiascos of their brethren in the recording and movie industry... but maybe not...

Living Room / RIAA Says DRM is Dead

A true sentiment?  Or a disingenuous statement?

http://lifehacker.co...iaa-says-drm-is-dead

The points made are genuine- DRM inconveniences legitimate customers, not those who wouldn't buy in the first place.  But do they really see that now?  And how long before the MPAA and whatever association is over the rights of book distribution follow suit?

Living Room / Advice on Netbooks
« on: June 29, 2009, 05:00 PM »
I've used a USB drive for a while now to carry around my programs everywhere, and it's great!  However, I think I'm ready to take the plunge again into a readily portable device instead of depending on there being a device where I go.  This isn't my first time down this path- I've had the Fujitsu P1510, the Sony UX280P, the OQO Model 02 and one of the first Motion Tablet PCs.  But I ended up getting rid of all of them because they weren't as useful as I first thought; the Sony and OQO were too small for my purposes, I couldn't do without a keyboard to use a Tablet PC, and the P1510 was just inconvenient.

So I decided to wait, and now netbooks seem like what I was waiting for, but I'm not sure about committing to one.

Basically what I want is a device that I can carry just about everywhere, that I can actually use productively to write anywhere I want.  I need something that has a keyboard that if not comfortable, at least lets me type at a half way decent rate that's not so inconvenient that I keep using that as an excuse not to write.  I also want something inexpensive enough that I can justify keeping it around in an environment where I already have an iPhone, a giant Laptop, and a Desktop.  I also need it to be Windows based, since the software I use to do research and write in is Windows based, and I don't want to change.

The devices I know of include the Sony Netbook (too expensive- though it appears perfect), the HP Mini (again, too expensive), the Dell Mini (too expensive for the space), the Lenovo Thinkpad (too expensive), the Asus eee pc, the MSI Wind, and the Acer Aspire One.  I was trying to keep near $200, though a little on either side is fine.  I was leaning towards the Acer Aspire One, but wondered if anyone had any experience with that model, or any netbooks.

Thanks!

I know we have a country thread, an introduction thread, and a couple of other threads about demographics, but I was wondering what people use to program- just idle curiousity.

Personally, I use Delphi 7 and 2006 (toying with the idea of getting 2009), C# (WinForms and WebForms) 2.0 and 3.5 Framework, and still have a bit of left over classic ASP out there (using a combination of JavaScript and VBScript).  I've been toying with the idea of learning Ruby or Perl or even PHP, but keeping up with the tech I know is exhausting enough.  I'm also thinking about getting into AIR or Silverlight, but haven't decided which yet.
