Unfinished Requests / IDEA - On task termination perform an action
« on: September 19, 2005, 07:41 PM »
How about a utility that would allow a specified command line or application to be run when a process exits, or drops to 0% CPU usage for more than x minutes?

I'm thinking of using shutdown.exe primarily, but it would be really good if it were more generic, and perhaps allow simple batch processing for apps that don't have batch options, or sequencing of processing (eg. convert video data, on exit run ISO builder, on exit burn to DVD, on exit shutdown).

Not sure if this is a coding snack or something to be added to an existing project?

Having just started to use MMM+ I was intrigued to find PerfectMenu (http://www.pitrinec.com/pmeindex.htm).

I haven't tried it yet but at $19.95 it looks promising as an idea - unless Mouser can come up with a DonationCoder alternative ;)

A couple of years ago I purchased the MacroWorks from this website and it is really very good - but I can't honestly say I have exploited it fully by any means. The Advanced Scripting Edition looks well designed too (VBA compatible scripting).

The only URLs that seem to be caught don't produce a file to download. Am I missing something?

Screenshot Captor / Error - Access violation
« on: September 09, 2005, 05:23 AM »
I am getting a number of odd things happening with 2.00.07

1) Sometimes the thumbnail list is listed as an Explorer 'details' type display

2) I am getting regular Access Violation errors, particularly associated with the browser pane.

After an Access Violation Error all sorts of odd things start to happen - duplicate thumbnails (for different files) for one.

I have tried uninstalling, cleaning the install folder and then reinstalling but still get the same probs.

Mouser's Zone / Suggestion for forum navigation
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:06 PM »
Could you add in the 'up' and 'down' bottons in the forum config settings. (They are effectively top of page/bottom of page buttons)

I don't know about other people but I use the unread messages button most of the time, but it is at the top of the screen, meaning long threads have to be scrolled back to the top to go back to the button.

How do you stop right click menus and balloon tips in the system tray opening behind the task bar ???

Strange problem, but makes menu selection a good memory test  :-[

Living Room / NOD32 config info at Wilders - good but a quick warning
« on: September 08, 2005, 06:28 AM »
I was recently pointed at http://www.wildersse...owthread.php?t=37509 by Fred Langa's newsletter (you all get this ... right www.langa.com there is a free version but I pay for the plus version and it is an excellent read).

This provides a comprehensive set up and tweak list for NOD32 version 2.5 and is excellent.

The only problem I had (and this is the warning) is that after applying all the tweaks GetRight download manager stopped getting file sizes for new downloads and really struggled to complete downloads.

Be aware that the HTTP compatability settings need to be set with care (half way down page 2):

and in particular all the GetRight settings need to be set for compatability mode.

The problem arises becase when "Higher efficiency" is set all files are downloaded first by NOD32 and scanned before being passed to the application that requested them. Sometimes this means that applications make the request and it is then downloaded twice! Once for NOD32 to check and once for the application, but in GetRights case it tries to download it and sticks in the last few bites forever and so the download never completes!

Find And Run Robot / Bug(?) in aliases
« on: September 07, 2005, 10:13 AM »
Here are a couple more settings

lookup
 (.*)
Encarta $$1 |http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/refpages/search.aspx?q=$$1
Britannica $$1 |http://www.britannica.com/search?query=$$1&go_button.x=10&go_button.y=5&ct=

Strangely I find if I type:

lookup Einstein                (I was feeling highbrow)

not only does it come up with the expected:

Encarta Einstein
Britannica Einstein

but it also comes up with all of the "define Einstein" results (based on your dictionary dist) but not the "search Einstein" results (based on my web search list).

Any idea why this should be?

I tried various alternative alias names but it made no difference??

Using build 1.07.06 by the way.

ProcessTamer / Feature Idea: Profiles
« on: September 06, 2005, 06:26 PM »
Two requests:

1) Is it possible for the configuartion app to force the tray app to reload its configuration file? One possible way this could be implemented is for the config file to be monitored and when configuration changes are OKed a flag in the ini file is read by the tray app and reset as it loads the new config.

2) Another possible solution/enhancement is allowing profiles to be loaded (ie. different ini files). I find that invariably the one process I want to be working at full steam is the one that gets slowed down! Consequently I end up with loads of processes set to ignore, which defeats the purpose. If I could have eg. a CD buring profile that suppresses CPU usage for everything other than Nero then I could carry on doing things while Nero gets on without disruption ...

Living Room / File associations screwed - anyone help?
« on: September 05, 2005, 05:32 AM »
All my graphics file associations are screwe up so that Explorer conext menu no longer has any open options ???

"Open With" menu consists of "Open With" and does nothing.

I have checked through folder options to see what is going on and files still have correct command assocations for Open, Print etc., they just don't appear in the context menu.

I tried reinstalling PhotoShop to see if that would reset all the file associations etc. correctly but it hasn't managed to change the context menu.

If I look at a file's properties and change the apllication used to open the file the application list has the "Always open with this application" ticked and greyed out.

Anyone got any idea what the heck is going on and how to fix it ?

Find And Run Robot / Feature Request - Find folder names
« on: September 01, 2005, 07:06 AM »
It would be useful to find folder names in searches (perhaps a toggle button in the main window) so that they can opened with double click.

If this was system (or even network) wide it could make locating files a real snap - especially if a system folder snapshot/database was incorporated like we discussed for files in Program Files.

In the meantime just folders within search folders would be really useful.

Living Room / Forums query

Is there anyway that in the 'uread posts' lists you can force a thread to open at the first unread message rather than having to scroll through everytime? This would be really good for multipage threads.

General Software Discussion / HMonitor ... a warning ...
« on: August 30, 2005, 06:06 AM »
Just had a bad experience and felt the need to express myself.

I purchased a copy of HMonitor http://www.hmonitor.com/ a while back.

It is a key based system (which is fair enough) but be warned if you buy this software.

If at some future date you need to reinstall Windows the key will not work and if a new version is released the author will not supply a new code unless you buy the version upgrade. I have not changed my hardware so I do not need an upgrade, or gain anything if I do.

This would be fair enough if I upgrade my hardware and need the later version for support but I don't !!

To my mind this is the worst of practices (and pretty unique in my experience).

Effectively you are held hostage to upgrades.

If you want a hardware monitor I would suggest looking elsewhere !

ProcessTamer / Request: Auto timed restart after disabling
« on: August 27, 2005, 05:00 AM »
Would it be possible to add an option to suspend this app for a few minutes (the length of time fixed in options and then applied from a tray option, perhaps 0 time could be an indefinite suspension).

The reason for this is that I have some apps that I am quite happy to calm down sometimes, but at others I want them to be as quick as possible so it isn't practical to set up a single rule to cover this.

Also it would be useful if when it loads during startup there was an option to wait a fixed length of time before it starts working.

I'm not sure but I think it is slowing down my system startup as it lowers lots of apps priority as they start loading.

Cheers

Screenshot Captor / Bugs 'n' suggestion
« on: August 26, 2005, 11:49 AM »
Just a few things I have noticed with version 1.2.6

(1) The confirm save on change option doesn't work properly.

Try this:

Select a region in an image and dim outside.

Now select another image.

The new image is loaded but the changed image is stored in the list without confirmation.

If you go back to the modified image you can't undo the changes either.

(2) ^Z for undoing changes doesn't seem to have the same effect as Edit >Undo

Undoing from the menu undoes the last process, but ^Z seems to undo a little of the last step. Try dimming an outside region again, and using both methods to undo.

Suggestion:

Grey out the Undo & Redo options in the Edit menu when there is nothing to undo or redo

Cheers

Yankee Clipper 3, see http://www.intelexual.com/products/YC3/

This is another freeware clipboard utility.

It seems to coexist quite happily with ClipBoard Help and Spell, but has the advantage that it also collects images and RTF clips.

There is a commercial version too YCX ($14.99US) which adds a lot of extra facilities.

Some of these would be nice in CH&S ...

General Software Discussion / Useful Windows 'inventory' tool
« on: August 20, 2005, 05:08 AM »
Check out http://www.dogkennels.net/filemap/

It is a really simple tool that takes a snapshot file list of three main windows directories and can tell you if files have been added or deleted.

It can be set to run on system boot and warn you if the system directories have changed since last boot.

Interesting if you want to know what is installed in the background during programme installation and/or potential spyware threats hiding in the system folders.

I have to say the user interface is a bit clunky (to many confirmation boxes to click) but the author is aware of that and will probably sort it out some time. Meanwhile it is a useful little utility.

Screenshot Captor / Next additions ...
« on: August 20, 2005, 03:56 AM »
At the mo you can grab individual objects from screen. SnagIT can caputure whole windows by autoscrolling the window, could that be added to ScreenCapture?

Also is it possible to capture just a menu ? At the moment the only way I can capture menus is by using the timer mode and doing a whole screen capture: but I may be missing something.

Finally how about making the timer delay user configurable (in Preferences).

Cheers.

Just thought I'd let people know about JGSoft's AceText.

It does a lot of the thing Clip&Spell does and more. You may like to ckeck out the trial version.

See www.acetext.com

General Software Discussion / IDEA: CD-RW/DVD-RW emulated drive?
« on: August 19, 2005, 11:38 AM »
Not sure if this is available anywhere else or how hard it would be to produce but I could really use a CD/DVD writer drive emulator.

There are plenty of CD-ROM/DVD-ROM emulators out there (such as DriveImage supplied with Nero) but I haven't seen any equivalent writer/re-writer emulators

Ideally the drive should appear as a normal windows device but allow writing and capturing the output to either a HardDisk folder or an ISO image.

The reason for this is I have a number of programs that burn directly to disk and have no way to save images otherwise - particularly Audio and Video stuff. It would be really useful to be able to edit the output contents before burning a physical disc.

Drag&Drop Robot / CounterSpy flagged files - query
« on: August 13, 2005, 04:29 PM »
I installed Drag & Drop to try it out and have also just installed Sunbelt's CounterSpy software and it is flagging two files which I think may be related to this app:

c:\program files\drag and drop shell robot\irunin.lng

and

c:\windows\iun6002.exe

Obviously the first one came with this utility - but I am not sure about the second.

Can you confirm if these files are supplied and if so explain what they are used for?

I am sure there is nothing sinister because they triggered a response for threats that are otherwise not present on my system (ie. none of the other files or registry entries associated with the named threats are on my system).

Cheers

This is brilliant - boot Windows XP/2003 from a CD without using hard disc at all to allow file recovery etc.

See http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

It is dead easy to use:

Run the program,

Insert your Win XP/2003 installer CD

and it produces an ISO file to burn to CD which will boot your system (provided your system supports booting from CD).

It also provides various useful tools etc.

The programme was recommended by Fred Langa (of LangaList fame).

Have fun

Carol
