fSekrit / Progress towards v1.2
« on: September 06, 2006, 05:16 PM »
First: I hope to have v1.2 (or a beta) ready by the 15th.

Second: for some reason v1.1 wasn't uploaded to the site before now - blame is probably on me. So even though it was done on April 11th, you've all been missing stuff like text-find until today, doh.

What will v1.2 bring?

A better way of saving. Saving to the executable of a running program isn't possbible under windows (at least not without some very dirty tricks), so one has to jump through some hoops. The new way is still a bit bothersome, but better than the old. What this means to you is that fSekrit will not "flicker in and out of existance" when saving. (mostly done, needs extensive testing)

Somewhat more secure, by using a non-zero IV (techy stuff ;P). (done)

Custom font support, as per request. Per-user registry setting. Currently debating with myself whether to add a GUI font selection, or require the user to regedit. (done - unless you people want GUI).

Import and export of text files, because copy/paste can be a bit tedious. Also, it seems that the win9x clipboard is limited to ~12kb of text?, so this is needed for win9x support. (not started yet, should be easy)

Better win9x support. By creating a ~1meg note on NT and loading on Win98, I found out that large notes are read just fine by - but when saving, only ~60kb makes it to the file. (shouldn't be too hard to fix)

Living Room / World's cheesiest fight scene?

Not sure what the swedish word "sämsta" means, but cheesy seems to fit. Great fun, great 80'es retro value. Oh, and ALL the classic sound fx are in use :-*

Living Room / Within A Deep Forest - oldschool game
« on: July 06, 2006, 03:58 PM »
The same friend that pointed me to Armadillo Run now guided me to http://withinadeepforest.ni2.se/ . It's a great oldschool type of platform game with simple but beautiful and cute graphics, great atmospheric background music, cute sound effects, and a simple enjoyable gameplay.

Warning: you can waste a LOT of time on this :-*

Living Room / Armadillo Run - great physics game
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:51 AM »
Friend of mine linked me to this cute game, which is a barrel of fun. I think I'm gonna purchase it (and live off pasta next month >_<), although I don't like the machine-locked nature of it's protection.

The demo is a bit short - 10 tutorial levels and 6 real levels, but it's enough that you get a good taste of the game. Should run pretty great even on older hardware.

In some way, I think the blog is fun. But it'll be more fun when the blogger faces legal action. People just don't have any decency these days.

Living Room / Skype users: beware (silver needle in the skype)
« on: May 15, 2006, 06:43 AM »
Finally, some skilled people have taken the time to disassemble SKYPE - quite a task, since it's heavily obfuscated and encrypted.

The PDF is an interesting read, but for normal users the most interesting point is that it quite seems like Skype is exploitable for arbitrary code execution. This means: DANGER WILL ROBINSON!

EDIT 2013-Jan-25: added "(silver needle in the skype)" to thread title so it's more searchable.

fSekrit / Progress report etc.
« on: March 25, 2006, 09:08 AM »
Hey everybody,

thought I would give a little status/progress report on the next version of fSekrit. I had originally planned to have the next version ready by the end of March/start of April so it could be included in the DC newsletter.

Unfortunately, the last two weeks have been really shitty. Last week, my VISA credit card was stolen at work, and has so far been abused for about $85 (I discovered the theft and blocked the card within 12 hours, but international credit card use sometimes take a week or two to show up on bank statements). My bank will cover this, but it took over a week before I got a new card, and you realize how dependent you are on those things.

A month ago, I sent in my phone for repairs - the "joystick" on it was fubar, something that appearantly happens with all k500i phones (happened to both my brothers, they got theirs repaired for free). But appearantly mine was damaged due to moisture (as if! it's a mechanical problem!), so I'd have to pay $45 just to get the phone back - unrepaired!

Tuesday I fell down from some packages and bumped my head and trashed my arm. Not too bad, I could work again the next day, but bad enough that it's still a bit stiff and strained so heavy lifts are a bit painful. Unfortunately, heavy lifts are what I do most of the time at work.

Thursday, my old "backup" cellphone was stolen at work. I switched clothes at a toilet, and had left the phone near the sink while I switched. Of course I forgot it there, and 15min later after talking with my boss, I realized I had forgotten it... and it was gone. Not a big deal either, it was a crappy phone that only cost me $1, I needed another phone anyway, and I had all my contacts stored on my PC anyway.

At least I got a nice amount of cash in tax refunds, so I went to buy a new phone, some clothes, and other misc. stuff. After 50min I returned to where I had parked my bicycle, and... it was gone. Which really sucks, since I don't have insurance yet, and I have to bike to work since it's so early in the morning there's no buses.

On top of this, I have had a pretty tight schedule the last week; mum's birtday a couple days ago, and celebrating my dad's birthday later today. Both involves an amount of hours of train travel, and unfortunately I don't have a laptop, so the travel time can't be used constructively.

All this has drained my energy, and all the administrative crap involved in talking with bank people, the police, finding an insurance company etc. has taken a lot of time. I'll do my best to have something ready soon, but I'm not sure I can get it done in time for the newsletter.

The upcoming version will have a few bugfixes, menu items for functionality already there in form of keyboard shortcuts, and probably some mouse right-click stuff too. The main new features will be search and replace.

For a future release, I have unicode/utf-8 support planned, as well as some features that will make fSekrit even safer than it is now, while at the same time making save more convenient (none of the exit-reopen stuff that makes the window "flash" and forget cursor position). I'm also thinking about a "mass-conversion" tool for text files, but that will be external to avoid code bloat. And I've been pondering about making fSekrit a "suite" of small useful encryption tools, like self-extracting encrypted files.

So, just a little update so you don't think I've been slacking off.

Living Room / I'll be gone for a while
« on: February 11, 2006, 10:41 AM »
Hep!

I've just moved to another city; my girlfriend and I managed to find a nice flat, and decided it was time to move in together. About time, very nice, etc.

Unfortunately, this means no internet access for a while - not until we've found some jobs so we can afford it.

I'll hopefully be back in a month or so.

fSekrit / Version 1.0

Version 1.0 released, grab it at http://fsekrit.donationcoder.com  :D

Many thanks to Stefan for the original idea, and for being very patient with me. I've spent more time developing this than I think is reasonable, at least considering my own standards. But now it's done, hopefully pretty stable and usable, and... go download, already :P

General Software Discussion / Assembly coding

rjbull, Assembly coding doesn't really have anything to do with genius - just a lot of stubbornness. Like cutting down a tree with a kitchen knife.

Living Room / when physics become fun
« on: December 14, 2005, 12:53 PM »
My younger brother just directed my attention towards http://www.sodaplay.com/constructor/ - amazing how cute constructions you can make from such simple building blocks (masses and springs, basically). And of course some sine-wave animated "muscles" to make things dynamic...  :)

Anyone that enjoyed the "penguin" games will probably enjoy this, even if it's not as gory. I don't really get the rules as they're in japanese, but when something lights up, you can click the left mouse button :)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Blackbox for windows - shell replacement
« on: November 14, 2005, 07:53 PM »
Tired of the way the default windows shell looks?

Then try heading over to http://www.bb4win.org/ - a port of blackbox for windows. It's a sort of minimalistic window manager, with pretty modest resource consumption (~10meg working set size, ~6meg private bytes on my machine). It's got skinning support, and is pretty snappy.

It's highly configurable if you don't mind getting your hands a bit dirty, supports multiple virtual desktops, has various plugins for various tasks, support overriding default windows keybindings (like Win+R -> FARR), and should generally just be tried.

You can simply download the zip (I got the bbLean release which is pretty barebone, Xoblite is supposedly more pre-configured), unpack, and run the blackbox exe - no need to replace your default shell right away. You can exit blackbox at any time, and get back to the regular explorer interface.

http://www.xoblite.net has a whole bunch of addtional plugins...

Here's a screenshot of my left monitor (I've got two TFTs) running blackbox with a few apps open. The black bar to the bottom left is "uberbox", a fancier version of the windows "Run" box with aliases and history completion - I'll replace this with FARR soon.
