PocoMail- $40
Eudora- $50
Opera- €34
Becky- $40

.. seems to be about the price level today, but I agree it's a lot of money.

You could, but you cannot always expect to be allowed to plug storage devices into computers and run arbitrary programs. You can almost always find a place where you can use a web browser though .

Services like gmail and yahoo mail are great for when you're traveling, or for unimportant chitchat, but if you have anything important in your e-mail, you'd better make sure you have local copies (and backups).

You are at the mercy of whatever happens to the service, and you can be sure the TOS says it's tough luck if all your e-mail is mysteriously gone :deal:.

I got burned a long time ago with hotmail, where the spam rose to incredible levels after the Microsoft takeover. Thanks to the brilliant policy of deleting your oldest e-mail to make more room when your mailbox was full, I lost some important messages. Yes, that's right .. "You've received 1.5mb of spam and worms in your Junk folder today, so we'll just delete your old archived mail to make room for some more" ::).

BTW, regarding a border/color change caused by hot tracking in PocoMail; I see only one, and in the preview pane, and it's minimal (it's 1 pixel wide!).  I assume they do it there because otherwise, there would be no indication that the preview pane had focus.
-Scott

Here I have a color change on the background of the selected item in the mailbox list and message list as well.

The currently selected folder is marked with bold text and a light blue background, and when the mouse pointer enters the mailbox list the background changes to dark blue. The same with the message list, except here it's gray and dark blue. On the message view it's a thin black border as you mention.

You are probably right it's to show that the hot-tracking is working.

I am a big fan of security when it comes to e-mail clients. Here are some points to look for:

  • Should not use MS HTML component, but some internal viewer if at all
  • External images should never be downloaded by default
  • Java and/or *script has no place in e-mail
  • Should warn before opening attachment / link
  • Should integrate nicely with virus scanner

It's not so much the effect of hot-tracking itself I dislike, it's more the flashy color/border change that some apps have with it, like Corel Draw and PocoMail. Moving the mouse around the user interface, I get distracted by controls lighting up .

Oh, how I loathe smart menus .. it's the first thing I turn off when installing a Microsoft product :nono2:.

It's of course a question of personal taste .

What I wasn't so happy about at first glance were things like:

  • focus following mouse, and highlighting selected item in each part of the windows when entered -- I find it distracting
  • inconsistent coloring of the close icon (red in mailbox tree and address book, blue on message list, and on the left instead of on the right
  • doulbe-sized buttons on all dialogs (since there are more than enough tiny little buttons, it can't be for accesibility reasons)
  • Some buttons have tooltips (bar above message), some buttons show info at the bottom (inside message), others have no help at all (toolbar)

I'm sure it has tons of nice features though .. I was just describing my first impression .

I found the user interface of PocoMail to be crowded and somewhat messy .

Thunderbird can be a bit slow on old machines due to the GUI stuff, like Mozilla.

I like that The Bat! and Thunderbird are not using the MS HTML control to show HTML messages .. fewer security problems .

Don't know what PocoMail is using.

Yes, I looked at it -- seems very nice. But I don't really like that it's a .NET application :eusa_naughty:.

I was a happy Opera user back at version 3 and 4 .. marvelous program, and very fast.

Then they started protecting every exe and dll in the package with some executable protector, and all of a sudden the "fastest browser on earth" took more than a minute to start on my old box :wallbash:.

So I switched to Mozilla, which was fast compared to that .. a shame ::).

You can edit received message with a little hack in The Bat!

If you move a message from the Inbox to the Outbox, you can double click it to open it in the editor and put it back in the outbox when you're done editing. Then move it back to the Inbox again.

It does seem to change the dates in the headers though, but that's the price for a hack I guess .

1116
Sure, feel free to do that :).

I'm sure there are more clever ways to do it, but this one seems to work ok on my problem. It lets a few of them through, but I figured better safe than sorry .

I've had a bit of a problem recently with Russian spam, and thought I would share a simple filter I made for TheBat! v3 that seems to work ok:

Condition:
Recipient contains: <my_e-mail_address>
AND Subject match (?:[\x80-\xff]{3}.*?){3}
AND Subject does not match \w{4}

Actions:
- Mark the message as read
- Move to the folder \\<my_e-mail_address>\$JUNK$

The first regexp looks for three groups of 3 characters in the high ascii range -- this covers Russian and Chinese symbols. The second regexp makes sure a subject with some regular word in it does not get filtered, by looking for 4 consecutive normal characters.

Hope it's useful to somebody .

There's also WS_FTP Server, which I hope makes good coffee too at $399 with no updates .

I installed the demo of FeedDemon, and the interface is quite nice.

I couldn't find any options to control scripts, ads or ActiveX though .. where do you do that?

The main thing I wasn't so happy about with feedreader was that there was no way to get an overview of all new items other than clicking through each feed to see. I can see they've added something to do this now, albeit somewhat simplistic.

Rss Bandit also looks promising .. though it's .NET like SharpReader.

Hi,

I'm looking for a good RSS feed reader. I've used Feedreader for a while, which I have been quite happy about, but thought it might be nice to see what other options there are .

I understand FeedDemon and SharpReader are also popular.

What are your recommendations?

Coding Snack Guidelines / Re: CODERS: Post Here
« on: April 30, 2005, 02:23 PM »
Hi,

I code in C and C++ mostly, sometimes in asm, and in perl if need be.

I'm not much of a GUI coder, and mostly work on command line applications and libraries for other coders.

So, in the rare event of a request for a command line tool or something not requiring much GUI coding, I might give it a shot .
