Living Room / Low Dosage Phenomena
« on: March 19, 2011, 06:41 AM »

banner8.jpg

From one of my feeds related to science comes this snippet:
Coulter and O'Reilly, arguing over science. America really has become an idiocracy.

On the one hand it is easy to laugh about fools, but I think these particular fools are dangerous because of their influence on other people.

Anyway, the actual article is longer and explains things better and more coherent (for me at last).

Cody's Club! I like that!

Just when I think "Wow that thing is HUGE" the camera goes up the tower, and up, and up, and up; and then there are even more of those machines.  :o amazing!

Living Room / Nice close-up pictures of African volcano
« on: March 18, 2011, 08:40 AM »
bp20.jpg

The Big Picture usually has many striking pictures of various events and locations, and this one is not any different. A couple of scientists or researchers want to get REALLY CLOSE to an active volvano.

Above you see my favorite picture which shows a person really close to the crater and also gives a sense of scale. There is another picture with a person standing right on top of the rim!  :o

I believe all the nice pictures, including the one above, are by photographer Olivier Grunewald.

browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar perhaps

However, my FF4 shows page titles in window titles

Could it be a setting somewhere?

Maybe FF renamed the file according to MIME-type?

Yay new adventures and pictures!

Just when I was getting impatient and wanted to nag. Excellent! It's exciting to see Baby Cody taking part in the super critical house moving.

How do other members of shackspace react to Baby Cody?

Yesterday my browser was misbehaving, but I could make it do what I wanted. I considered it challenging enough to share the experience

I added the style definitions to userChrome.css, restarted firefox and lo and behold — those bloody buttons where still there, taking up screen estate!

General Software Discussion / Re: A New Name for StackOverflow
« on: March 10, 2011, 02:43 AM »
Back in the days I came across experts exchange, and used it a little. But their answers are hidden behind a registration wall. So when I needed As for my Qs stackoverflow had become popular, and I immediately saw its usefulness.

I use it every once in a while; it is my main source for information about "how to" do something. I appreciate them keeping all the information out in the open.

But I've never used any of their other sites.

I have several times thought about creating my own such synchronization service. But I have never actually started on it, that is, I never got past sshfs.

I want to have my personal service because I don't trust 'them'. Sometimes there terms & conditions are not really in my favor (all your stuff belong to us, but you are still liable). Having a system that works for clients on different platforms -- linux, windows, mac, mobile os -- would be awesome.

Ah and here I had a completely different understanding of "doublt opt-in": I thought not only do you (or someone else) have to provide your email address and tick the checkbox, but also you receive a confirmation email that asks to confirm the subscription. If no such confirming action is taken, the email address is not used.

Of course spammers will not care about confirmations.

Living Room / Re: A Point About Grammar
« on: March 05, 2011, 03:10 AM »
There is a weblog about grammar as well: Throw Grammar from the Train

I have only glimpsed at a post about National Grammar Day.

It shows that we are not alone with our concerns about grammar :)

I use git with great success, but it does have drawbacks, namely poor support for Windows platform.

It is very fast even with large repositories.

AFAIK mercurial has much wider platform support than git, but is also rather slow. This is from hearsay though.

I chose git at that time because it was the new shit.

That's the spirit!  :D

You should write more posts then, so the donations keep coming :)

It's nice to see post at other sites supporting this fund raiser. It makes me feel warm inside :)

Here is my other site's post: http://nrrd.de/content/half-way-there

The image this time is from donationcoder, but it is still cute (are there any pictures of Cody that are not cute?): https://www.donation...y_coinwing_48xT2.gif

98
Well for the record: it seems to work just fine in my case now :)

99
I wonder how many users gripe about not having internet explorer available ;)

The idea is nice I think: if it really boots in a very short time.

I bet from a marketing perspective it is perfectly normal and desirable! ;)

But those marketing folks are different anyway...
