tinjaw h' u reached anywhere with Python, did u find it easy, just checking...

Yes, I love Python and use it every day in my day job and every night for fun.

27
This is one of the better ones. There are others. But IMNSHO, you are better off starting with Python.

28
If you want to start with a scripting language, something like Python would be a much better choice.

29
I have registered it; no one else can get it instead.

What did registering it entail? Is it one of those programs that locks to your hardware signature? Can it be "unregistered"? Like if you wanted to move it to a different computer.

And on a completely different approach, I suggest you contact Adobe and ask to speak to their developer relations manager. Likely such a person would be more than willing to make the necessary arrangements to see that it goes to a good home given that it would give them some good PR/exposure on a developer community like DC's.

30
Why would you want to do this might I ask? Seems rather pointless. Also seems a touch dodgy as (buggy?) applications could well rely on those folders existing.

Sometimes I have a USB stick that is getting full or a portable HDD. I take the entire contents and move it to a directory on a larger external hard drive. I then pick through the directory deleting what I don't need to keep and reorganizing what I want to keep. It is easier to sort through the directory if I can first cleanup all the empty directories.

It's just a convenience thing in this case.

I often also use it on a directory before archiving it using some non-standard compression program - as those usually allow you to ignore empty directories.

31
There still is not a version of RED compatible with Vista or Windows 7. Does anybody have a recommendation for a similar program? I am not looking for Directory Opus, I am looking for a focus tools with a nice UI to locate and remove empty directories with options to allow me to find them and then choose which ones I want to delete.

32
Awesome. I missed the BDJ deal and was bummed. I just got a copy of BING using the code. Thanks!

And you can only install it on Tuesdays, when it is the month of December, and the wind is less than 3 mph, and you use a cassette tape to load the program after downloading it via a 300-baud acoustic coupled modem.

Wow. I have been bringing home work for over a week. And it will continue for another. Most things are backed up, piled up, dangling, unread, unprocessed, unfinished. This is one of them.

OK folks. Nothing has inspired me yet it terms of how to give these away. I will probably just end up giving them to whoever asks for them. Seems like a waste.  :(

Maybe sell them and donate the proceeds instead to a good cause. Comments?

General Review Discussion / Re: In praise of opinionated reviews

This thread was mentioned in another here on DC. I thought I would resurrect it to add...

I'll go cross-post this over there... but you haven't seen opinionated reviews until you have watched Zero Punctuation

I won't give you any hints. Just don't watch while you are drinking anything unless you have one of those plastic covers on your keyboard and a splash guard on your monitor.

37
may be this is the type of thing folks were hinting at in the 'In praise of opinionated reviews' thread.

I was already having an email conversation with O'Reilly. I mentioned the post just so they knew about it. I didn't expect a reply. I think they probably didn't realize that I hadn't used their name in my blog post.

Any how....

I'm glad all is now well in the world.  8)

42
It is O'Reilly and it is a bug in their shopping cart. They posted on my blog and emailed me. They said to call them and gave me a name of a person to ask for and they will process my order.

The thing is that I am kind of sad, because my post/comment wasn't meant to bash O'Reilly but point out how unexpected use cases and unplanned events backfire if they aren't properly handled. It turns out O'Reilly was actually having a planning meeting today to work on their new ecommerce website system.

I was also wondering whether people thought I was just being too greedy if their expectations were in line with mine.

Any way, tomorrow I will be purchasing about $100 worth of books from O'Reilly that I wouldn't have purchased if they hadn't sent me the coupon.

Living Room / When 40%-Off Your Total Purchase Becomes 0.3%-Off
« on: March 01, 2010, 02:57 PM »
Posted this on my personal blog today. I'm interested in your comments. Either here or on my blog.

When 40%-Off Your Total Purchase Becomes 0.3%-Off
Posted by Chaim in Uncategorized

I received a “Come Back. We Miss You.” discount coupon from a major technical book publisher. They said that I could get 40% off my total purchase. Great, I thought. They wanted to incent  me to buy some books (IOW spend some money with them) that I wouldn’t otherwise have done without the discount coupon. This would have worked, but didn’t.

As many programmers I have two list of books. One is the list of books I want/need. I purchase these books (yes, often with discounts) because I am willing to part with my cash for them. Then there is the second list of books; books that I might like to get, but aren’t will it part with money for because there are other things that would give me better value for my money. However, I can be persuaded to purchase the items on the second list if I get a deeper-than-normal discount. I thought I has received an offer of the latter type. Turns out I was wrong.

Here’s the deal. This publisher sells print and ebook versions of their titles. If you purchase both at the same time, you get a significant discount on the ebook. For example, $44.99 for print, $35.99 for ebook, or buy the $44.99 print version and for $4.50 more, you can get the ebook. Basically add 10% to get the ebook bundled. I put 4 print+ebook bundles in my shopping cart. That totaled $159.46. I expected to be able to use my 40% coupon and get that for $95.68. That’s a great price and would push me to purchase close to $100 worth of merchandise from this vendor that I wouldn’t have otherwise spent.

But that is not the case. Why? When I added the discount code they un-bundled the ebook from the print book. This meant that I got 40% off the non-bundled (i.e. $44.99 + $35.99) price instead of the bundled price ($49.49). This meant that instead of $95.68 my cost would be $158.95. Significantly higher and only 0.3% discount.

I didn’t make the purchase and they lost $95.68 that I was ready to give them.

Am I being greedy? I’d like to hear your thoughts?

44
I haven't really thought of a good way to find these books a good home. There haven't been any ideas here that sound viable.

I'm thinking the next question is can we at least identify those people who desire the books and consider themselves "candidates". Maybe I should create a new post that asks people to "sign up" and explain why they want the books and what they would use them for? And mouser could feature it some way?

What do you folks think?

General Software Discussion / Re: Should I pay to go from 3.0 to 3.1?
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:42 PM »
Only true if that was the upgrade policy when you bought.  Just because the most common policy now seems to have 'minor' version upgrades free with 'major' versions costing doesn't mean you can assume it will be true for all software. They seem currently to be operating a policy where upgrades are free for a year. It's up to them what the policy is (and I've certainly seen much meaner policies than this). And .1 increments on some apps are as big as 1.0 increments on others.

There policy is as follows:
Purchasing any product entitles you to free support and free upgrades for one year from the date of purchase.

And I am accepting that, and willing to pay.

However, the point that I am (poorly) trying to make is that I don't care if it takes two years to add 0.1 versions of functionality. I paid for version 3.x of the software and I expect incremental changes to be available to be. I shouldn't be "penalized" (as I see it) for being and early adopter. I also think that there is a difference between minor enhancements and adding new major features. If I purchased software that imports files and 3.0 imports TXT files and 3.1 imports CSV, well, that, in my opinion is keeping the software current and useful over the lifetime of that 3.x product. If you now add the ability to export files, well that is new functionality and should go into version 4.x. If I purchase 3.x and 4.x comes out within 180 days, then it is good customer relations/service to provide version 4.x free.

As I plan on selling software myself at some point in the future, I am interested in hearing from others. If time permits, I will attempt to write up something more on this.

General Software Discussion / Should I pay to go from 3.0 to 3.1?
« on: February 24, 2010, 05:42 PM »
Interested in your thoughts.

Hello,

I don't remember which version I have. I don't remember when I purchased.

I will pay the $19.95 to get the new version.

That said...

I can only feel you yourself knows this isn't kosher.

1) If it is only an UPDATE from 3.0 to 3.1 (which is what a .1 increment is) than I should get it free if I own 3.x. Period. End of sentence. I paid for 3.x. It is mine.

2) If it is a significant investment in resource that you expended for things like cleaning up code, fixing bugs, or adding lots of (albiet necessary) code for small added functionality. That was an investment you made. Don't make me pay for it just to get a .1 increase in functionality.

3) If you made enough changes that it is worth an additional cost, then stand up and call it 4.0 and defend your choice to do so.

As it is now it seems you are too embarassed to call it 4.0 because you know it isn't worthy of that designation, but you did a lot of work and you want more money.

As a software developer myself, I don't care how much time/resources you expended to add funtionality. All I care about is the value to me, as the purchaser. If you hold back functionality in 3.1 and 3.2, etc. for version 4, so be it.

I am very busy, so I hope I have gotten my point across quickly. If you wish to discuss this more, I can write more later.

Either way, good product. Don't use it much, but that is the nature of my work. It is a good tool when I have a problem your tool addresses.

Peace,
Chaim

General Software Discussion / Re: Paragon Virtualization Manager 2010
« on: February 20, 2010, 09:48 AM »
My plan was to play with this this weekend at my leisure. Well, plans changed. My game machine has been blue screening while left overnight during the past week or so. When I go to shutdown that computer it just sits at the shutting down screen. About 2 days ago plugged in a second USB keyboard and it didn't work. Then I notices my existing keyboard didn't work, nor the exisiting USB mouse. After rebooting several time, even with all my USB devices removed, the USB ports didn't work. The USB ports show up in device manager without errors, but when I plug in any USB device Windows reports, after a short delay, that they device is not functioning properly. I was hoping it was "simply" a O/S issue, but booting to a different windows image on that same computer proved that it is a hardware issue.

So I have a game computer without any working USB ports. Don't think the motherboard is under warranty, but I'll worry about that later. Fortunately the PS/2 ports still function, so I can attach a keyboard and a mouse.

The play is to virtualize the computer (which I won't really use in that state because it is my game machine) and then restore it to a physical machine after I replace the motherboard.

Please eat a plate of spaghetti and meatballs for me today in a sacrifice toward good luck.
