Accessibility Game Contest / Special Preview & Beta Test !!!
« on: December 21, 2006, 10:38 PM »
I have decided to give you folks a sneak peak into my game submission in return for your help in beta testing.

I will post new versions as I make new builds. All you will need to do is run the EXE. It will ask you to pick a directory for it to install to. (It just unzips into that directory). Then run AsteroidsOfOrion.exe to enjoy the game.

There is a README.TXT included with some information to get you started. I will be adding more as I work on it over the next 24-36 hours in preparation for an official preliminary contest submission. I doubt I will get much sleep during all of this.  :P

So, here we go. The first build can be found here. Get the second build below.

Developer's Corner / What Eclipse Plugins Do You Use?
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:48 PM »
I do the majority of my development in Eclipse these days. I use the PyDev Extensions when coding in Python. I always use the Subclipse extension for use with Subversion.

I am curious to know what other plugins are worthwhile for Java and Python development in Eclipse. What plugins do you use?

Living Room / ShowMeDo - Video Tutorials
« on: December 09, 2006, 07:59 PM »
Let's start out with their own description:

This site is dedicated to showing demonstrative videos produced by our community. For many subjects seeing something done is the most effective way to learn, whether it's peering over an expert's shoulder while they explain how to program or watching while someone grinds beans and makes coffee. Please watch, learn and perhaps share your knowledge back.

It is a community site where community members can request howto/tutorial videos and other community members make them and put them up on ShowMeDo. They have areas for Python, Java, Linux, Ruby, Blender, and Screencasting. There is also an "Others" section.

Community members can vote on a video's worth and they have a forum for discussion. They also have a blog and a wiki.

General Software Discussion / Krugle - a search engine for developers
« on: December 03, 2006, 05:25 PM »
I am surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet.

http://krugle.com
[attachthumb=#1][/attachthumb]

At Krugle  you can:
  • Find and review source code
  • Find projects and technical stuff
  • Save, annotate and share results

It is obviously going to be competing with Google's Code Search. They have a short demo available.

Living Room / Video on Linux, Free Software, and Open Source
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:18 AM »
If you don't know the history of GNU, Free Software and Open Source there is a good video on YouTube. It is focused on Linux and Linus, but covers the Open Source community. It is a recording off of Swedish television, but 95% of it is in English.

General Software Discussion / FUD Forum (forum software)
« on: December 03, 2006, 11:05 AM »
If you are researching forum software you should include FUD Forum. The two features that brought FUD Forum to my attention are:

  • NNTP & Mailing List integration, allowing FUDforum to be used to archive newsgroups & mailing lists, as well as allow forum members to post messages to newsgroups and mailing lists via the forum.
  • Threaded View (by default standard flat view is used)

There is a list of features available.

I played with it for a few months and thought it worked very well.

Living Room / Congrats Veign: Quick Thumbnail Mentioned on Lifehacker
« on: November 27, 2006, 10:19 AM »
Our very own Veign [1] has one of his masterpieces, Quick Thumbnail, mentioned on LifeHacker. I'm proud to say I, personally, gave him some advice [2] while he was working on the beta of the site.

[1] I'm just posting what mouser was, most likely, thinking.  :P
[2] I was just one of many on #DonationCoder that day on IRC and my advice wasn't all that great and want used, but hey, this makes for a better story for my grandchildren. It doesn't matter that I don't have children of my own, let alone, grandchildren.  :-[

I'm doing a complete overhaul of one of my personal websites and I need to choose a color scheme to use. I've been messing around the past few days with some online tools, but I found one that I really like.

colorblender.com
[attachthumb=#1][/attachthumb]
To get started, choose a preferred color using the color picker below, and a 6-color matching palette (a "blend") will be automatically calculated.
Using the radio buttons you may switch to Direct Edit mode to tweak or edit individual colors of your blend.
Blends can be saved for future use, and will be available whenever you return to this site from the same workstation, given that your browser accepts cookies.

[update]
I stumbled upon a web page that lists the good ones and what they are used for. It is a good place to start exploring.

Living Room / ChatterBlocker
« on: November 03, 2006, 08:01 AM »
Today I made a software purchase, ChatterBlocker.

I downloaded the demo and used it yesterday and it worked very well. The price used to be $40, but they recently halved it to $20. It is a must buy at that price for anybody that works regularly in an office environment.

I run it on my laptop and listen using a pair of Phillips SBC HN110 noise-cancelling headphones. The headphones are nice because they cover a dynamic range that includes human voices around 1 KHz.

The two together create a pretty impenetrable sound barrier. Assailing my ears without this combo are an air conditioner, electric fan, several computer fans, office chatter or about ten officemates, and some traffic at the loading dock.

Living Room / Toad for MySQL 2.0 - Free Version Available
« on: October 30, 2006, 09:02 AM »
I have been meaning to post this for quite some time now. <a href="http://www.quest.com">Quest Software</a> has released <a href="http://www.quest.com/toad_for_mysql/">Toad for MySQL 2.0</a>, and there is a free version. If anybody works with MySQL as either a developer or a DBA should download it and take it for an extended test drive. Toad is another one of those swiss-army-like tools that you can only really appreciate after extended use.

While looking for some smilies I stumbled upon a pretty neat site for smilies - Mazeguy's Smilies. They even have a online application to create your own smilie speech bubbles like the one above.

General Software Discussion / Cygwin
« on: October 08, 2006, 08:31 PM »
I see a lot of request for command line tools and for free software. Just a quick reminder not to forget about Cygwin:Thmbsup: With Cygwin loaded you get access to many of the tools available to *NIX users that do many of the things you are looking for. Many small utils piped together can be very powerful.

Skrommel's Software / ZoneSize and Two Monitors
« on: July 13, 2006, 03:47 PM »
Skrommel,

First of all, thank you for ZoneSize.

I am running it on a computer with two monitors. I am running it as a dual display and I am not stretching my desktop to fit both monitors. (IOW my  taskbar only shows on my primary monitor, windows maximize to only on monitor, etc.) ZoneSize only seems able to set zones on my primary monitor. Does that sound right? Is there a work around? How much would it cost to bribe you to add dual monitor support?  :P

thanx,
tinjaw
