Mouser what are you thinking about supporting United Naming Convention for network paths so we can search network drives without having to map them to a drive-letter? Guess it's not a big priority as the work around is common :)

You know mozy? http://mozy.com/

Thanks for all the replies!
I also was thinking if I had OS-wide tabs, then I could have all task-A related information in tab1, and task-b in tab2. I have seen software for this before, one was from this guy who did one piece of software a day for 30 days (afaik), but the implementation was not 100%.

I was wondering if something like this exists: a desktop state snapshot & recall software. The functionality would be easier to describe with an example:

I am working on Task a: I have browser windows open, dreamweaver, loads of other programs. Now I want to work on Task b and return to task a later.

Can I save the state of all the programs, start afresh, complete task b, and then resume where I left off?

(=In writing this topic I realise I could maybe achieve this with Virtual Desktop software, although some software will not support multiple instances. But are there any other solutions?

Developer's Corner / Re: How long should a software time trial be?
« on: January 17, 2007, 06:03 AM »
Even if you find that most of your customers can decide in 7 days whether to buy your software or not, do you really want 'to pressurize them' to do so in 7 days?  ;)

Skins I would recommend based on the screenshots included in the skin pack:

wmpx-XMP2
VistaXP-VISTAXPS2.jpg
TD4-PANTHER.jpg
SYSTEM4
Sustenance
Royal1
RoueGrey
OpusOS
Luna
Luna (Longhorn Revolution)
LE4
Clearlooks

I have not listed any color variations specifically. Any skins which change the minimize/maximize buttons I think should not be included, nor any that had interface elements misaligned (see Head1 Head2 in the screenshots and up/down arrows). Exception for OpusOS.  :-* Tried to list the most usable ones instead of the crazy ones.

  • Dictate the FARR vision by removing options. There's too many of them. Who will uncheck "remove duplicate links to same target application"? Decide on defaults. It makes the options that remain more meaningful.Every time you provide an option, you're asking the user to make a decision. http://www.joelonsof...s/fog0000000059.html
  • Searching for results can delay user input in high CPU usage scenarious. Can you make the searching more independent from the user input so it won't get delayed. (Try installing windows in virtual pc and then use FARR)
  • Support for unc network paths. e.g.find asp files in \\dev\Inetpub\wwwroot\staff intranet\public\docs
Hope these help!

Just to feed back to you. There's some problems with, what I think ,the way such software can "catch" closed software. For example, on exiting an app with unsaved info, some spawn a new dialogue asking you whether you want it saved or not, others must spawn a dialogue as part of their app. I am a web developer not a win32 developer so perhaps I am mistaken.

For example the dialogue box on exiting notepad causes problems with GoneIn60s. I also had some problems with Quicktime, closing it while it's still buffering and downloading a movie locked up my pc. I guess this is due to Quicktime's implementation, maybe there are too many variations?

If you are still looking for testers, I would be happy to help out test my favourite productivity tool.

So, what can you do with it? Is it like a "macro under a button" toolbar so you can do things that took 10 clicks from a menu in 1 click?

Find And Run Robot / Fantastic app - idea for faster searching
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:33 AM »
Fantastic app, can't live without! One suggestion, could it be possible to speed up searching by caching a list of 'found results', load that in instantly, then check it for changes in the background? That way you'd get instant results with a small chance of them not existing anymore, while the list is updated when you're idling.

As i've set up FARR to go through Program Files it now takes a second or two to go through everything, so any performance improvement would be welcome!

edit: sorry nevermind i must be the million-th person to suggest this! my apologies.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Context menu organiser

Ah it seems he's doing the creation of items as well. Powar Toolz!  :D

The topic is quite a good source of apps though as it lists a lot of them, one of them might suit my needs.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Context menu organiser
« on: December 07, 2006, 05:21 AM »
I was wondering if a thing like a Context Menu organiser exists. Can't find any with google. It's not been discussed on here before (according to my search), but for me it is becoming a nuisance. When I right click a folder I have so many options:

I am looking for a small app that would allow me to delete context menu entries and move them into 'subfolders'. Nothing more. Does software like this exist and perhaps it can be made into a coding snack?

I can't get Log Monitor do process any results. For example I have set it up for it to popup every minute if a file in my temp directory has changed/added/deleted and every time it runs and it has results (so it does the scanning bit right) it displays a popup with [N].[E] instead of the actual file!

I'll include contents of my test config.

Edit:
I have something working now. Make sure you do a Check Now instead of Do Action Now to test it.
I enclosed Final.mon.txt for anyone as an example

On the one hand it's easy to restore from the taskbar but I find they can still get in the way. hmm can you add them dynamically to the system tray menu  and hide them instead of minimizing them to the taskbar? I don't think people would restore software often enough to have them take up taskbar space.

Also I found that some slower software such as outlook becomes stuck semi transparently for a fraction of a second, a minor niggle really but if you know why? (maybe part of the minimizing animation of windows).

1891
Wow, genius! Thanks so much!  :-* Hopefully it will be useful to many others.

1892
So what you are saying is instead use a program that on close minimizes the software to your tray, and if you really want to close it immediately use a keyboard shortcut like ALT-F4 to bypass this mechanism?

But then you'd end up with dozens of items in your tray that you'd have to manually close. Maybe the implementation is not as straightforward then.

1893
Sometimes you accidentily close a program but then want to retrieve it. Opera browser has a "closed pages bin" that gives access to your closed pages from this session. It would be good to have a "closed software bin" where any program that was closed would go and stay out of sight for a time period (say 60 sec) and then close by itself. if the software was minimized before sending to the closed software bin (could be a tray icon or part of the taskbar) I believe windows frees up memory.

Obvoisly  the point of it all is that you can reopen a program you accidentily closed without losing the information you were working on.

It wouldn't work well with games so perhaps it needs an exception list. Could this be realised? Thanks
