Living Room / The Birds - Redux?

"We will fight on the beaches: Britain's war with rogue killer seagulls"  http://www.msn.com/e...ar-AAdzN4z?ocid=iehp
gulls n fries.jpg

A visit to a traditional British seaside town is usually a fairly safe and relaxing, if uneventful way, to spend the summer.

But, in recent weeks a threat to that tranquililty has emerged. Not the weather. Not even soggy fish and chips. Something altogether more menacing: rogue seagulls.

This month, the British media has been filled with accounts of increasingly violent behavior from gangs of gulls. The Daily Telegraph warned of "killer seagulls," "more interested in blood than bacon sarnies [sandwiches]." The Daily Mail reported that "packs of birds" had begun to "target women" to get food. London's Metro had an even greater threat on its mind: Seagulls could "start killing babies if we’re not careful."

On my part of the planet, S Florida, gulls 'target' any possible food source.  They don't fly or hunt in 'packs'.
They basically just fly near each other, like cars on a freeway, scanning for food.
They are rogues, compared to most other birds, possibly because they seem to 'hunt' separately-together.

Maybe we could ship our Killer Dentist over there... with some bird-shot?   ;D

Living Room / Alien washes up on NJ beach
« on: June 24, 2015, 11:12 AM »
This reads like a tabloid headline.

A potentially deadly jellyfish-like sea creature washed up on a New Jersey beach over the weekend, officials said.

Isn't almost anything potentially deadly?

Portuguese man o' war, floating around, is seasonal in S. Florida.
And they could be deadly, I guess, if the tentacles got wrapped around your upper thighs or got in your mouth.   :o

Its nasty sting is excruciatingly painful...

Yes, very painful and lasts around 30 minutes.  With paralyzing and numbing as well.

forgive me, crabby3, for having an opinion about something I don't know anything about... but MAYBE you already have some anti-virus program of a kind running!?? At least, that is what your description makes it sounds like.

If by 'running' you mean installed and used... the answer is yes.

@IainB:

I have used Run, Save and Save As, many times... so my selection is (b) Your PC has a virus.   :(

Kaspersky, MBAM, SAS, etc. are updated daily.

Whitelisted:

Kaspersky - My Pictures
MBAM - zero
SAS - zero
SpyBot S&D - zero

During my very first MBAM download (the older version) I chose Run... so I do not have it saved anywhere.

------

I presume I could contact MBAM Tech Support and maybe downgrade... back to the older version.   :)

@crabby3: Let us know if it gets fixed and how, please!

1) Uninstalled using Add/Remove programs in the control panel
2) Restart
3) Ran clean-up tool
4) Restart

Tried to download MBAM but do not have the option to run and it will not save or save as:(

I guess I'll see what Tech Support has to offer.

Update:

- Downloaded MBAM v2.1.6.1022 to desktop.
- Downloaded MBAM Cleanup Tool to desktop.
- Went off-line.
- Uninstalled using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
- Restarted.
- Ran MBAM Cleanup Tool.
- Restarted.
- Installed MBAM v2.1.6.1022.
- Went on-line and ran Update.

During the initial Threat Scan, it froze... twice;  ;D  During Pre-Scan Operations.

Some of MBAM Tech Support is questionable; so won't be contacting them (again).

FWIW:  MBAM has never detected anything on my machine.  So I don't normally use it to scan for malware.

SAS, SpyBot S&D and Kaspersky work just fine.

do not have the option to run and it will not save or save as.

-so you are obviously not using Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

The mbam-setup-2.1.6.1022.exe is a normal installer. When you are on  https://www.malwareb...es.org/mwb-download/ and you have cancelled the download (because they try to force you to open the file at once), just right-click the green [download now] button, and find Save link as... in your right-click context menu pop-up.

The setup file is 20.55MB

Today, using IE9, Filehippo gave me the chance to download (the green box).  Also I was given the choices: Run, Save or Save As.

I used Save As and sent it to my desktop.

Thank you very much, IainB, for your extremely comprehensive reply.

Now I have something interesting to do today!   :)

Living Room / MBAM scans freeze computer
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:31 AM »
The freezes began after installing MBAM v2.1.6.1022. Old version worked fine.

Scans begin then the freeze happens. Everything stops. Looks like a full-screen-capture.

It lasts around 11 minutes, then scan resumes and the machine becomes usable again. (i.e. USB mouse, desktop clock, etc.)

Anyone else have or seen this?   :tellme:

@Stoic Joker

My choice as well.     Seems to improve with age.

I remember the name Zep.  But not what it was like using it.

Edit: come to think of it, I seem to remember this was the green stuff with abrasive.  Like a green mud.  I remember the dual opening can described.

Goop, if that's what it was, was a strong lye based soap.  But at least it didn't have abrasives.  Anyway, none of the stuff worked if you had to bust tires.  Some of the tire changers wore gloves.  But I needed more control.  I was a thin guy and not strong back then.  (Now I'm a fat not strong guy.  Progress! ) I had to rely on timing.  I never changed a split rim truck tire the whole time.  That was better side-stepped in my estimation.  The store where I did my first stint as an official mechanic there was a tire cage with two of the bars bent out from one of the rims going off during inflation.  It was like that when I got there.  Anyway the managers didn't push it since they could see how slight of build I was.

You may have to remember on your own.  I was a weekend-warrior that happened to be in close contact with professional mechanics at a job I had.
My ground-in dirt came from years of pulling out and rewinding 3" fuel hoses stored on reels... at this job... refueling commercial aircraft.
Timing was the key when wrestling these hoses, not strength and gloves just got in the way.  Sometimes strength is confused with being in shape.
(After that job i never saw 180 again).   :-\

The only 'soaps' I recall using were:
1)  Tide Laundry Detergent; the powder.  (Tide would remind me of any cuts that may need a second look).
2)  Lava; the green bar.  (Lava worked best on dried acrylic paint or slightly dirty hands).

Unfortunately ground-in dirt needs to be ground-out.  Tide + stiff bristled brush = cleaner hands.
Sometimes I would skip the fingernails if i was headed back to the auto-parts store.  A sort of 70s style status symbol.   8)

Anyone remember the name of this mechanic's hand soap?  It came in a can with a blue label.  It looked just like Crisco.  Like a white lard.  Or like the white part of Dannon :fruit on the bottom" yogurt.

It escapes my memory.   :-[

Maybe Gojo?

I would have remembered that name once mentioned.  It must have been goop.  I remember it had Lanolin.  That was back before anyone knew how good aloe was.  :)

I love a mystery...  :)

Would you have remembered Zep?  (I didn't until about 10 min. ago)
ch zep.jpg

I don't recall seeing it sold retail, (mid 70s), but the dispenser-ready can, used in truck repair-shops, was mostly this color blue w/ this logo.

The can was about 6" x 10".  The top lid was the same size as the can and could be pryed open with a screw driver.

There was a second lid on the bottom, about the size of a golf ball, if you wanted to use a dispenser.

It was off-white Crisco as well but i never used any... so i don't know if it was gritty or had Lanolin.

Both Goop and Zep have been around for more than 60 years.  Haven't researched Gojo.

It looked like off-white Crisco and was expensive.  A small can like this, back in the 60s, was around 4 bucks.   :o
