Developer's Corner / Re: Needed: CLI RSS reader script
« on: February 14, 2008, 03:53 AM »
RSS is just XML. Use ElementTree. It is a standard module in 2.5.

Genius! Thanks. I'll begin tapping away - it just seemed to me that RSS readers are geared towards reading feeds like email, no quick notifications within one sentence.

Fingers crossed!

Developer's Corner / Needed: CLI RSS reader script
« on: February 12, 2008, 02:41 PM »
All,

Firstly - hi friends, sorry for the lengthy absence!

Right, down to business. I need a command line RSS reader, preferably with the following attributes:

  • Python based, or at least as cross-platform as possible. Please, no perl!!
  • I only need the title to be displayed, and maybe a URL.
  • Nothing fancy, it doesn't need to run off a database and remember everything, just for instant alerts, much like twitter.

The idea is I need something to track high-activity RSS feeds, such as the digg feed, or reuters feed, or keyword feeds for google blog search etc..

I could write this myself, I guess, but it is a matter of time.

OK, sod it, I will have a go myself! Can anyone suggest a small, light, RSS lib for python? Thanks!  :D

Congrats, CleverCat! I used it when I was on Windows. Definitely worth having in the research arsenal.

I know this is a pointless post.. but it really is the responsibility of website designers to create printer-friendly pages. Just a reminder to those who make-their-own  :D

General Software Discussion / Locate32; searching E-Mails?
« on: February 19, 2007, 04:06 AM »
Hi all,

I grabbed Locate (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1385.0) last week - and am thoroughly impressed! Great work, godly-developer

I just wanted to ask if it's possible to choose to search e-mail messages too, specifically Outlook 03? (It's what I use here at work). If not, has anyone any suggestions for high-volume searches of email?

Many thanks in advance,
Matt

Edit by brotherS: added link, slightly changed the topic.

OK, here's my view in respect of a Project Manager of a design agency.

It breaks nearly every single legislation in both PAS78 and WCAG 1.0. No HTML alternative is a huge no-no. The way the navigation actually works (taking away the idea it is even flash), is highly unaccessible for motor-impaired users. It even confused me.

From a marketing / promotional viewpoint, I have no idea what the company offers. I closed it way before I got anywhere near anything obvious that tells me their sector.

I would not commision this site if one of my team though it up  ;)

Sale of Goods Act (Key Facts) -

• Wherever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).

•  Goods are of satisfactory quality if they reach the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory, taking into account the price and any description.

•  Aspects of quality include fitness for purpose, freedom from minor defects, appearance and finish, durability and safety.

•  It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract.

•  If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time". (This is not defined and will depend on circumstances)

For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement).

• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

• If repair and replacement are not possible or too costly, then the consumer can seek a partial refund, if they have had some benefit from the good, or a full refund if the fault/s have meant they have enjoyed no benefit

• In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

• After six months and until the end of the six years, it is for the consumer to prove the lack of conformity.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: eyeOS - Online "Operating System"

Didn't notice the replies to this - sorry

I agree, OS is a silly word (should have used Web Desktop / Webtop) .. but this post was made a while ago and the concept wasn't booming as much as today. Points taken, though

Vanilla looks pretty nice actually - but also pretty vanilla. I would miss emoticons and avatars on a vanilla-vanilla forum :). Searching and the like does seem nifty though.

They are easily added. I believe http://www.boagworld.com/forum/ is Vanilla :)

Personally, I absolutely always use a wallpaper that makes me smile / feel warm / depicts something I'm working towards. It's amazing what a difference an image can make, but it does.

I could go into the psychology if you want but I'm doing enough of that at work today... fecking colleague and me are the only ones in and I'm running around like a blue-arsed fly  :(

42
SWEET. Looks hot, seriously. What's funny is that Metaforum and this Vanilla one are surprisingly similar... look at both their "root" forum pages. See those three tabs on top? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Vanilla would have been the original - it is open-source so I guess Metaforum can do what they please.. but I can promise Vanilla is an original product  :) Certainly is sweet!

p.s. Nice to see you.. long time no talk

Seems the site is down, but the e-mail is functional still..
http://www.emaildisc...d&threadid=47053

You could try inbox.com, or grab a cheap domain from Godaddy/Namecheap (use coupon code DSC3 in GoDaddy for $6.95 .com domain) and forward the e-mail on...(free email forwarding) ?

if you want to know, you aren't the only one! Take advantage of this! Send me $5 and I will send you the names of five other people who also want to know. You just ask them to send you $5 and send them five names. You make lots money fast with this proven work at home plan.

Very nice find indeed, thank you Ken!

I have some questions I'd like you to address...
  • What would Hitler's deceased Jews say about Google?
  • Ditto for Stalin's 50,000,000?
  • Ditto for Mao Tse Tung's millions?
  • Ditto for Saddam Hussein's political rivals?
  • Ditto for [fill in the blank, there's plenty of others]?

I don't know if I've missed the point here, but I am sitting in awe that you are comparing a search engine to vicious, sadistic, egoistic, masochistic, bullying murderers?

If I have misunderstood, please feel free to correct me. If I am correct, I think I may wretch. Literally.
