Actually you're right. I guess I got it mixed up with one of the others that I tried. But whenever I try to add my image directory hierarchy, it crashes. Every single time, and I tried 5 times, with variations each time. This was using Cycler Lite.

27
Fast Picture Viewer is very cool, and is an option if I could set it to startup automatically in auto-advance mode and always appear in Monitor 2.

Regarding JBS, I just posted in their official forum for a more flexible way of setting time intervals.

28
John's Background Switcher is impressive for freeware, but the 10 second minimum is too high for my needs.

At first impression, AWC fits the bill although it looks to be unusually CPU-intensive while John's, which seems to use more RAM, barely uses the CPU at all. If I can get John to add a 5 second minimum, or a more flexible way of choosing intervals, I'd be sold.

29
Mike- thanks for that. I tried Cycler but it doesn't let me change more frequently than 1 minute.

Curt- actually, I don't need a screensaver because I want the photos changing on Monitor 2 while someone is working on Monitor 1. But thanks a lot! AWC fits the bill perfectly. Awesome.

30
Er... yes, I did say that too :)

In any case, I need a faster change than every 10 seconds.

I'm looking for Win7 software, preferably freeware, that can randomly choose desktop background images from a directory (and its subdirectories), stretch the image to fill the screen if necessary, and change the desktop background image every X seconds.

I just upgraded my wife's PC to Win7 from XP. On XP, she was using an old XP Powertoy to change the desktop background images every 3 seconds, and the images were being chosen from a large directory hierarchy of family pictures. This way, our second monitor became a large digital photo frame when it wasn't being used for DVDs, and we often found ourselves and/or our kids watching the pictures.

Win7's own background image settings allow an automatic image change every 10 seconds at least, but the images can only be taken from a single directory and not a directory hierarchy such as our family photos of the past 10 years. Although, if anyone knows some registry hacks to change this, I'm interested.

A good resource is this: http://www.techsuppo...allpaper-changer.htm

Most of the listed programs there either don't support time intervals lower than 1 minute or don't support choosing images randomly from subdirectories or aren't compatible with Win7.

Any suggestions?

Jacob

Doh! Well I don't expect you to compensate for the lack of UTF-8. Maybe Mouser's planning on making CHS UTF-8 aware and we can revisit this then.

For WordPress: this is the Trac ticket where Word Count was implemented.

For Twitter: whatever functionality you decide to implement, just try to make it so the official Twitter count is always less than your count. That way, if your count is 140 or less, I know for sure that I won't need to edit the tweet again because Twitter's count will never be higher.

Thanks for diving in to this.

Personally, as a WordPress blogger, the count that interests me most is that one but even one that is less than 5% different is fine.

Also, could you add a character count too? Useful for us Twitter users who are limited to 140 characters per message.

Sure. I actually meant to do that but then forgot as I was compiling the information.

My selection started from the first line "Why you might..." and ended with my signature of "--Jacob Share". One important thing is that when you copy-paste anything from my site, a link back to the site is automatically appended to the pasted text, so you'll need to delete that and the whitespace before it for your results to be consistent.

BTW, installation of AutoHotkey is not necessary

Cool, just uninstalled it.

Regarding the counting- here's a test using this blog post of mine:

  • Your script on it: 101 lines, 857 words
  • Pasted into Word: 99 lines, 821 words
  • Wordpress: 808 words

I'm not so concerned about the line count, it looks like your script is impacted by the width of the window.

If you don't mind, would you provide more details on how you configured LBA and the steps you performed that resulted in the error?

Sorry, I had completely ignored the part about LBA. I thought that installing Autohotkey was enough. Now that LBA is setup, I added your script properly and it works. Although I would prefer a result in the Quick Paste Menu, this is definitely a big help already.

Thanks much!

Below is an initial attempt at an LBA script to report line and word count for the current selection -- the result comes up as a dialog box so it doesn't match the request exactly.

Thanks for this. I tried it and I get "Error reading output file C:\Users\X\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\tmpout.txt after tool run: C:\Program Files (x86)\Clipboard Help+Spell\Tools\word-count.ahk with params "C:\Users\X\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\tmpin.txt" "C:\Users\X\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\tmpout.txt""

I definitely wouldn't want CHS to be flagged as malware- good point.

4) Word count tool

I'd love to be able to know how many words there are in any copied text items listed in the Main Window, or even as an option to display that information in the Quick Paste Menu for each item that appears there.

I just finished watching the 3 screencasts, and I'm even more impressed with this program than before.

Ways that I could see CHS improved, that would also allow me to remove other programs from my system:

1) Text aliases i.e. shortcuts with a trigger that are then replaced by e.g. a much longer block of text.

I currently use Lifehacker's free Texter program for this and it works fine. But they way I look at, the expansions are just text blocks that I've copied like anything else in CHS, and want to be able to recycle quickly because I reuse them often.

Currently you can hack this with favorites but that requires mouse-clicking, while Texter let's me do this with just a few keystrokes.

2) Full-on key logging

Not for nefarious purposes, of course. I'm just tired of losing work because a program crashed and there was no autosave or I forgot to save regularly (which I shouldn't have to do). Yes, keylogging captures backspaces/deletions/etc., but I'd still rather reconstruct work from semi-jumbled text than have to try and recall everything from rote at a moment of extreme frustration.

And to avoid it being used for nefarious purposes, you could add in safeguards such as the captured text not being saved beyond the current session, for example.

3) Shortcuts to send copied content out as a tweet, Facebook status update, etc. with optionally-active built-in url shortening capabilities when a url is included. I'd love to have a submenu in the Popup Paste Menu that would allow me to choose a destination on the fly.

That did it for me, I can't reproduce the bug even without soffice.bin in "Capture Options".

Good work

Yes, I can confirm that even a row with a single digit (in only one cell) is enough to get the crash.

Regarding "Capture Options", if I add soffice.bin, I can copy & paste again. However, once I exit Calc and discard my changes, then CH+S crashes anyway. But if I save my changes, it doesn't crash.

Just to be ultra-sure, I removed soffice.bin from "Capture Options". With that out of the way, CH+S crashes regardless of whether I discard my changes or save my changes.

I'm on Win7 64-bit Home Premium, CH+S 2.09.01.

Here's how I can systematically reproduce this bug:

  • Open a spreadsheet in LibreOffice/OpenOffice
  • Left-click any row number, which selects the entire row
  • Ctrl-C

At this point, Win7 tells me:

Too bad you're not considering a Palm Pre/Pre Plus, they can do everything you listed in your requirements list except for an Anki app- you'd need to use the AnkiOnline site, but there are other flash card apps.

Circle Dock / Re: Instant Crash on Startup
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:34 AM »
I was also getting this error on 32-bit XP SP3.

I just uninstalled Circle Dock and then reinstalled 1.5.4 and now it's working fine.

The error may have been caused by installing the previous stable version over 1.0 (i.e. without uninstalling 1.0 first).

I agree with everyone up here. The newsletters rock. By the time I'm done reading, I've always got at least half-a-dozen tabs open if not more. Keep up the great work!

I'll stop using the word search, since I may be giving the wrong impression.

In either case you asked about, stuff isn't being found.

Assuming what you call the 'search list' is the list of folders under Search Folders tab, you know that my user's start menu is automatically added at installation, so if I understood your question, that covers:

1) C:\Documents and Settings\Jacob\Menu Démarrer

However, I did try manually adding:

2) C:\Documents and Settings\Jacob

That didn't work either - still nothing was being found by FARR in directory 1) or its subdirectories.

Some context that may help you reproduce the bug. After installing FARR 2 weeks ago, everything worked fine; at that point I wasn't using Hebrew for special characters. It was only this week that I selected Hebrew in the Advanced tab in Control Panel > Region and Language Settings (I'm translating from French, the cpl applet may actually differ in English). That's what exposed this issue.
