Nah, he won't be destroyed, the glories of information overload will see to that. He'll just change his company name and maybe even his own and then hire a front man, and be back in 3 months or less.

Heh Repasted from a Wrong thread is Wrong (rhymes with Long Cat is Long!)

I'm going to be funny and "Donate" what would have been the costs of my gift back to DC! I operate a bit like a comet in that I swing in with fanfare only to achieve that month's goals, then I swing out again, so I wanted to leave some goodwill rather than Top-Keyboard characters!

So I don't need DC gear, y'all just pay a bill with it!

Books! Nom Nom Nom...

Rather than list which books I am "actually reading" I'll list links to my personal library that I recently began typing up online! The chance of me reading any particular one at any particualar day resembles Quantum Field theory!  Here are the first few sets.

Developer's Corner / Re: Ribbon UI - is it really THAT good?
« on: December 26, 2011, 11:51 AM »
Hi gang.

I would like to bring up the Plugin approach. I too am frustrated at being dictated at by MS (and sometimes other vendors). It's not my problem if the Ribbon is more fun with clicky buttons for new users. I developed my little collection of skills (in my case, Excel) using the old menus, so it's not nice to lose that muscle memory. Plus, I also dislike the full screen file menu and print preview menu!

So I installed a plugin that adds back the old menus. It turns out the old code is still there! In effect all MS did was remove the street signs.

So I also guess that when WinMetro 8 etc comes out, there will be a way to turn it off, even if it takes a mini app to do it. I don't think MS can dare to throw out desktop code entirely, it's too cross-linked everywhere in dependencies. So they'll shove Metro in the spotlight, and just put a lock on the door in front of the "old code basement".

Hooray! Glad I could help! I am amused though, like they say of artists, that dated from my "dark colors" period. It was a fun app to commission though. We put some clever features in it.

« on: December 25, 2011, 01:40 AM »

Looping back a bit, some folks over at Slashdot say GoDaddy actually still supports the SOPA bill, they're just reversing their PR advocacy. Not sure of the details, I'll leave that to my betters.

Heh Thanks Joker!

And now for something a little different.

(To the tune of Lola, but borrowing some inspiration from Weird Al)

A bill was introduced in the House the other day,
Where they wheel & deal over Scotch & Soda, S-o-d-a Soda,
I found a congressman looking at a strange new bill
I asked him it's name and in a Wheezing Voice the Rep' said it's
SOPA - SO-SO-SO-SOPA...

The geeks are laughing a bit saying it's never been done,
A bill that breaks the net for every corporation,
oh yes it's SOPA - SO SO SO SOPA

Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand how they can
pull down any website they please and label it Banned,
SO-SO-SO-SOPA.

I think that with the quick reversal, and the prior history of good behaviour, this isn't one of those things.  If they dragged their feet in the mud and had to be pulled screaming, then I'd say so.  But not in this case.  The RIAA - yeah, I can see that.  The MPAA - yeah, I can see that too.  But this...?

I'm not so sure. The quick reversal bothers me. It feels like the New Hotness way of doing things. "Let's announce a position! Ooh, we're getting boycotted! Okay, let's announce the opposite position!"

Trouble is, it's far from clear that the *second (and good)* position will stick any better!

In my opinion, we're seeing a new breed of politics. "Announce something, and if the public is too exhausted to shout loud enough, do it. If they do shout loudly then:  reverse it, wait until it becomes Old News, then slide a weaker form of it in later."

Aye, it's not swiped, it was coded from scratch to my specs. Yay! I can still be a NANY!

I just wanted to get in on the App Providing Spirit. It's a fully paid Work For Hire I commissioned over at Rentacoder 4 years ago.

((I seems I still get to be a NANY! Cheers to Mouser!))

NANY 2012 Entry Information

Application Name Chess PGN File Processor
Version RC2 / Final
Short DescriptionDid you ever look at the colossal waste of space PGN files take? You only want to take a 10 page printout with you, not 100! Plus you get to save Trees!
Supported OSes Windows XP (Unknown on Vista or 7)
System RequirementsOnly Tested on XP but I will try to test it on Windows 7 soon because I have one at work.
Commissioned by TaoPhoenix
DescriptionPGN is Portable (Chess) Game Notation, which is an overgrown text file with certain conventions. It's supposed to let programs read in text files of chess games and display the moves and background info. The trouble is, it takes up a huge amount of space. I used to study chess in bars and I'd just want to take a nice batch of games on a printout to look at, and spill milk on, then throw it out afterwards, except for the one page with the good game on it that I'd shove in my pocket.

Ever seen a PGN file? Here's one.

(Look! I can modify the characters per line to fit forums!)
FeaturesWhen you want to study an opening, often you only want 1 side's wins. For example, if you are studying the King's Indian Defense, you want Black Wins to know what to do right. You can then look at the other results to know what goes wrong. I also threw in some silly UI themes, like the Green & Black Matrix colors and Commodore 64 (called Blue & White). Others: Old Macintosh, Midnight Hacker. : )
InstallationIt's just an .exe file, so you run it. I like Simple.
Using the applicationCheck out the Move Filters. A lot of chess files have silly broken fragments, so you can specify "minumum 20 moves" etc to filter out the junk. Also, Draws annoy me, so you can delete those too! (Yes, my example is a draw! The long draws are okay. It's the 18 move Grandmaster Draws that suk. So you can remove those either by Draws or by Move Count.)
UninstallingJust delete all the original components in whatever folder you put them in.
Known IssuesThis seems to be "RC2" according to my notes, I think I lost the Final copy, so I think there are minor bugs left, maybe with player names processing, and elsewhere. I think there's a bug with long names like De La Bourdonnais.

Finished Programs / Re: Coding Snack: Switch Filenames
« on: December 24, 2011, 01:51 AM »

(Someone tell me if they hate thread bumps!)

I just stumbled onto this, and found a great use case for it.

(Gangster's voice)
So ya' got's this file, see? And it's called Project Update December 2011 with annotations.pdf, which is a scan file. But then you add something else, and scan it again. I don't throw out partial work, I save it as drafts. But now it's no longer good! So I'm stuck scanning the new copy. But computers won't let you copy a new file with the same filename!
(End Gangster)

So this is neat so that when you rescan it, and it comes out Scan265432, you Switcheroo it, your fresh new scan gets the right file name, then you can rename the junk one Project-Junk etc.

Living Room / Re: Adware is not freeware, right?
« on: December 23, 2011, 09:56 AM »
(Mirroring Mouser's Post)

I'm afraid it's even worse than you are describing.  :(

It's not just that ad supported software is becoming the accepted synonym with "free", now we have Cloud-As-A-Licensed-Service (With Ads!!) becoming the accepted synonym for "software". Now if you don't authorize every byte you download or you are a day late on your payment you lose your license.

(See Microsoft's experimentation with "remote kills" on your Windows 8 Metro Apps.)

« on: December 23, 2011, 07:43 AM »

Oh I see, I didn't understand that you have to re-hit "Win-N" (or current hotkey) to re-enable the note. That makes sense, in a way, that you might not want all notes immediately showing in sensitive situations.

On my Windows 7 machine with a high screen resolution it looks like the OK button is falling off. Any advice or maybe an update?

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 - Pledge & Release: Stick A Note
« on: December 22, 2011, 09:43 AM »
Does it make any sense to be able to save the note with a simple save of the document? For example I attached a test one to a text doc, but then when I re-open the text doc the note is gone.

I'd also wonder if it makes sense to be able to Right-Click the note and save it as its own item. I save a bunch from my other sticky program and email them out (as pictures, I do screen grabs with that program.)

Eep! I deleted my copy so I can't test - how big of a file can this handle comfortably? I just got into some Directory Readers lately, which list every file you have, and those files can come out 90 megs!! (Yikes!)

Even Notepad struggles with those, so I turned to the web to find a couple high-performance editors. The funniest one is http://www.movsd.com/thegun.htm - The Gun (Grown Up Notepad) shrunk down to minimalist glory of 6k (!!) which is coded apparently in Assembly and drills out huge files. (See also apparently next-generation TopGun with more features.)

I am guessing that by "Safari" we mean "Safari on the specific pieces of Apple hardware". I instantly thought "well why not test Safari (on Windows) unless that's a source of more errors because it's "dogfood Safari" or something.

Meanwhile I've been bitten by Opera a couple of times too on my hobby pages.
